Posted in Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on Buffett appears at groundbreaking for Margaritaville Casino

From Shreveporttimes.com: “Margaritaville groundbreaking draws a crowd

Developers of the Margaritaville Resort Casino officially broke ground on their $197 million project today during a special ceremony that included an appearance from Jimmy Buffett.

Buffett, whose 1977 hit song has been branded into a number of business ventures, told the large crowd at 777 Margaritaville Way it was “truly an honor” to be in attendance and back in the area where he had performed early in his career.

Mayor Lorenz “Lo” Walker, city councilmen, Bossier police jurors, representatives of the Greater Bossier Economic Development Foundation and the Louisiana Gaming Control Board, as well as other area officials were in attendance.

Construction will begin immediately on the $197 million casino and hotel, which is targeted to open in June 2013. Margaritaville Resort Casino is projected to provide more than 1,200 jobs and more than $12 million in local tax revenue to support jobs for first-responders and educators.

Key West Songwriters Festival

About the Key West Songwriters Festival

Celebrating its 17th year, The Key West Songwriters Festival
is the largest festival of its kind in the world.
Since 1997 BMI has been a charter sponsor of the festival and
has helped it grow into both a tourist attraction and favorite
of island locals.
The festival revolves around five days and nights of more than
25 free shows, staged at an array of the island’s most
popular drinking holes and hot spots, where live music bliss
introduces crowds to the faces, voices and stories behind
the songs.
Diverse lineups featuring more than 100 top songwriters
deliver rare, “Key West-only” moments: Informal adaptations of
Nashville’s signature in-the-round acoustic showcases dominate
much of the schedule, while an event-capping street concert
adds an enticing Mardis Gras fillip to the mix.

Registration Open for Barefoot Islands Cruise

Posted in Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on Registration Open for Barefoot Islands Cruise

Registration has opened for The Barefoot Islands Cruise which will sail the Caribbean Islands you’ve heard Jimmy Buffett sing about- Anguilla, St. Barts, Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, Nevis, and Virgin Gorda. The custom itinerary allows passengers extended time to hangout ashore at famous beach bars such as Foxy’s, Sunshine’s, The Soggy Dollar, and The Dune Preserve. At most anchorages the ship will stay until late evening or even overnight.

The cruise is a full charter of the luxury ship Wind Surf of Windstar Cruises. With a capacity of only 312 passengers it will be a great way to get together with fellow Parrot Heads without the hassle and crowds of a large ship with 2,500 passengers or more. The casual atmosphere includes open seated dining (no reservations or seating assignments) with options to dine outside on-deck. Windstar Cruises, voted Condé Nast Traveler “Top Small-Ship Cruise Line”, continues to provide top-of-the-line service and amenities as a fleet wide $18 million refurbishment will be completed prior to the March 16-23, 2013 cruise.

Plenty of live music onboard and ashore! Enjoy performances throughout the week from a special ensemble of tropical beach rock musicians featuring Scott Nickerson, founder of Parrot Heads in Paradise, as well as special sessions with well known local musicians.

Rates begin at $1,899pp with items such as onboard watersports, ground transportation, and soft beverages (bottled water, sodas, coffees, espressos, smoothies, etc.) included. Register before March 23, 2012 and save $200. Additional discounts if you refer friends.

This will be a unique sail through some beautiful small islands and harbors normally only visited by smaller yachts. A perfect opportunity to sit back on white sand beach with a boat drink and good friends. Presented by Local Knowledge. See website for details: BarefootIslandsCruise.com.

Note: Jimmy Buffett is not participating in or associated with this event.

Featured Artist of the Week – Harbor Knights

Posted in Featured Artist of the Week, Trop Rock Artists | 2 Comments »

Harbor Knights

(TPM) Hi Dave, We are looking forward to seeing you here in SW FL. You are new to many of us, how do you describe your music?A fun enthusiastic mix of anecdotal mischief with a Classic Rock/Trop Rock feel. If it’s not fun music, we won’t do it. Sometimes the people that hire us want a lot of Buffett, sometimes they want Classic Rock, and sometimes they want Originals, it all depends on who we’re playing for. (TPM) IF MORE THEN 1 MEMBER PLEASE INTRODUCE THEM We are a three piece band right now: Myself, Jim (Mr. Jimmy) Scriven, and Bill (Billy Mon) Moran will be the line up for our little vacation/ South Florida Mini Tour. Then Jim will be leaving the band. He is retiring down in Punta Gorda to live the good life and pursue his dreams. He is a founding member and has been with the band from the very beginning. He’ll will be missed. He’ll be replaced by Kris Buryta; we don’t have a nickname for him yet, but we will soon. (TPM) Where are you based? We are based in Western New York State, Chautauqua Lake Region.

(TPM) How did you end up performing in SW Florida?I must give credit where credit is due: Steve & Debbie Johnson are two of your biggest fan/advocates and are known well through out the Trop Rock circles. A year ago they “convinced” Nancy Kirk at the Nav-A-Gator to give us a try and the gig went great. So we’ll be back there this year on March 15th as part of our Farewell to Mr. Jimmy Mini Tour. They also helped us with a show for the Charlotte Harbor Parrotthead Club. “Thanks to them both”

Pic

We do as many Originals songs as we can get away with and still keep the crowd in the fun zone.

TPM) How long has the band been together? band been together? I guess we’ve been playing for about five years now. I don’t remember for sure, but it’s been a long time (longer than most bands I hear). (TPM) (TPM) Do you have original music or mostly covers? We do as many Originals songs as we can get away with and still keep the crowd in the fun zone. (TPM) You have an interesting name Harbour Knights, what is the story behind it? My wife, Charlene, came up with the name. When Jim and I first got together, we were planning to market ourselves as a Jimmy Buffett Cover Band. We had a whole list of names that just didn’t seem to convey the right idea. It was getting down to print time for our first posters and we still hadn’t decided yet. That’s when my wife said “Harbor Nights. We live here by Lake Eire and you’re out all night”. Then a light in my head went off and I thought “Sure we’ll spell Harbor like Buffett does (Harbour) and make a play on the word Night. Thus. Harbour Knights”. I’m glad we did; the spelling is unique enough that when you Google it, we’re actually the first thing you find.

(TPM) Do you travel much?? As much as it takes to keep this crazy thing we do going to the next Tiki bar. That old adage “Have guitar will travel” fits now more than ever. I’m going to become a snowbird for the first time this year and I hope to expand the musical adventure to the tropics for five months out of the year.

(TPM) What do you do in your down time? CATCH FISH!! CEAN FISH!! EAT

(TPM)TPM) Do you have a CD out? If so what inspired it? 2009, “Everything’s Alright” featuring twelve new original songs. 2010, “Pink Fingernails” with the single “The Lawn Chair Song” and the title track “Pink Fingernails”, inspired by a friends battle with Breast Cancer.

(TPM) What is your favorite part of being a performer? I’d have to say meeting new friends and playing for old ones. I feel very fortunate to be able to play and sing my songs and have them appreciated. Life is Good!

TREAT HER LIKE A LADY – Jimmy Buffett, Dave Loggins

TREAT HER LIKE A LADY – Jimmy Buffett, Dave Loggins
Some of us sailors call her home, She’s big and she’s strong and she’s mighty, Some of us sailors call her our own, Guess that’s the reason why I treat her like a lady, Treat her like a lady, just treat her like a lady

Review of the Birmingham Show

Posted in Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on Review of the Birmingham Show

AL.com has a review of last night’s show: “How did Jimmy Buffett please his audience in Birmingham? Let us count the ways.” — Review rating: Four out of five stars.

Buffett, 65, and his 12-member band, the Coral Reefers, hadn’t played in Birmingham since November 2001.

Those Alabama roots provided a welcome focus for Buffett’s headlining set, which lasted about two hours and 20 minutes. He recalled his past in Mobile, inserted Birmingham into various song lyrics, praised the state’s football champs and generally acted like a proud homeboy. Buffett made sure to highlight another Alabama guy in the band, guitarist-singer Mac McAnally. Photos of Alabama were part of the stage design, displayed on a huge screen behind the performers.

Buffett’s playlist, nearly 30 numbers strong, clearly was made for the occasion. It included “Bama Breeze,” “Pascagoula Run,” “Back Where I come From,” “Stars Fell on Alabama,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Birmingham” and “Southern Cross.” Chris Fryar, a Gardendale resident and drummer for the Zac Brown Band, made a guest appearance on “Knee Deep,” playing percussion.

A surprising treat popped up in the middle of the show: Matt Hoggatt, a musician from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, emerged to sing “Dear Jimmy Buffett,” an original that aced a contest in American Songwriter magazine. Buffett sat nearby, cheering him on, then responded with a freshly minted song of his own, “Hey Matt Hoggatt.” What could be more fun, or more gracious?
