Buffett Lounging in Pittsburgh

Posted in Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on Buffett Lounging in Pittsburgh

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band’s “Lounging At The Lagoon” tour continued last night at the First Niagara Pavilion in Pittsburgh PA. The set list from the show is now available.

The Post-Gazette has a review of the show: “Jimmy Buffett transports fans to land of laid-back fun

On a sweltering Thursday night at First Niagara Pavilion, Jimmy Buffett managed to reel in more Parrotheads than a Pirates mascot tryout. The field was awash with Hawaiian shirts and more than a few hula skirts in a frighteningly even ratio of genders — all packed to the edges of the field to experience the “Lounging at the Lagoon” atmosphere.

What Jimmy Buffett manages to create, through the beach-side flavor and the carefree lyrics of his music, is a the laid back fantasy of a vacation. On an average work night, he can transform a music pavilion into a weekday getaway — even if he does forget that it’s Thursday instead of Tuesday. In the paradise he constructs for each audience member, the names of the days don’t seem to really matter.

If he is a master at anything, Jimmy Buffett is almost unparalleled in creating a relationship with his audience. In a way that you don’t even consciously notice, he talks to you during the songs, with little quips and observations that might be part of the song- or maybe not. Either way, he’s having fun, and it’s hard not to get caught up in his cheer.

Possible Margaritaville Restaurant in Atlantic City

Posted in Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on Possible Margaritaville Restaurant in Atlantic City

From the PressofAtlanticCity.com: “Resorts seeking approval to build Margaritaville Landshark Bar Restaurant at Steeplechase Pier

Steeplechase Pier, once the regular host to an 85-piece orchestra conducted by John Philip Sousa, could soon bear the name of another musician if it’s rebuilt as one of singer Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville restaurants.

Resorts Casino Hotel has applied to the state for an environmental permit to rebuild the pier — destroyed in a 1988 fire — and construct a restaurant, bar and surf shop in its place. According to the casino’s application, the $6 million project would construct a Margaritaville Landshark Bar Grill in the footprint of the former pier.

Courtney Birmingham, a spokeswoman for Resorts, said nothing has been finalized with the project and declined to answer specific questions. She said the casino’s permit application was “just a preliminary exploration so we could be prepared if the right opportunity was presented.”

Self-Worth and the Internet Marketplace

Posted in Trop Rock Artists | Comments Off on Self-Worth and the Internet Marketplace

What makes something worth X dollars and not Y? And how do we determine our own self-worth, in this age of free downloads, crowdfunding, and instant everything?

In this article, Doug Shineman talks about YouTube’s business model for embedding advertising. In it, he builds his case by talking about retail vs. auction methods of sales and valuation.

In the retail model, stores sell a widget for, say, $10. At an auction, the widget will sell for the highest bid. That might be $1 one day and $25 the next, depending on the crowd and how many people want it how badly. Same widget – different prices.

If you the reader have been following me at all, you’ll know that at the moment I’m running a Kickstarter campaign to help fund my newest CD, Of All the Rum Joints. As that campaign has developed, I’ve been learning some interesting things about my own self-worth and how I determine it.

It’s been eye-opening. I expect I’ll learn even more about myself by the time it wraps up next week.

You see, I don’t always have the strongest self-image in the world. This may surprise you, because I’m pretty good at “faking it ’til I make it.” And I’m not good at asking for stuff for myself like this, because I occasionally doubt I’m “worth it,” and like most folks I hate rejection. But what determines that worth?

In the case of this project, it’s apparently the number of people willing to put their money behind me and my music, and how much they’re willing to pledge. I had a “panic moment” of “what happens if nobody signs up,” and how embarassing that would feel to me. But I went ahead and did it anyway, figuring I really had nothing to lose but a bit of time and perhaps a bit of face.

I’m fighting a lot of old programming to get to this place. My Mom, bless her soul, left me a number of interesting mental “tapes,” including “don’t make a fool of yourself,” “what will people think,” and “be prepared for disappointment.” She meant well…but these are exactly the wrong tapes to support me in doing what I’m doing as an artist. And I’ve had to put a lot of work into resolving those tapes and creating new ones that serve me better.

Well, so far I’m doing almost as well as I hoped on Kickstarter, and maybe better than I expected. I’m over 2/3 of the way to making my goal, and at this point even if I don’t make it, I’ll feel like I’ve given it my best and gotten a good response. And that my music really *is* “worth it,” at least to enough people for me to feel validated.

And for better or worse, that helps me to feel better about myself, doing what I’m doing.

Which I think might make Mom happy, even if she *was* a bit overprotective along the way.

If you haven’t already checked out my Kickstarter project, I recommend it. It’s good reading and you get videos of three new songs, whether you pledge anything or not.

But I hope you will. After all, I’m worth it. And what I’m offering is well worth your support.

Pre 4th of July week

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on Pre 4th of July week

Tropical Storm Debby came and went with barely a whimper here in Destin. Other parts of the state farther east got some flooding but Destin only had some rain on Sunday and some wind for a few days and that was it. The “Worry” Channel was making it sound like the entire state of Florida was underwater and getting ready to float away! I had family worried because of what they saw on the TV. I guess if the media doesn’t sensationalize things they won’t get anyone to watch. Okay, back to our regularly scheduled program. lol

As I got ready to head home from work on Monday I got word the traffic was backed up on the island. I turned on the radio to hear about a wreak on the Brooks Bridge. I did not want to sit in traffic. I also knew Wayne was heading home about this time. I called him and he had just left his office. We decided to head to Friday’s in Ft. Walton and have a few brews to let the traffic die down. It was a good call. It took a friend almost an hour to get across the island. It normally takes about 5 minutes.

Tuesday was spent at home but on Wednesday Sunshine Cindy and I decided to head to the harbor. I am taking a few days off so it was the start of my weekend. We went to the Turtle. Matt was there behind the bar. Tourist were coming and going. We talked to some businessmen from Michigan who are in town. Matt got his picture taken with some lady who was going to tell her friends back home this is the Tiki Bar she plans to buy some day! We also learned that Matt was a fireman in Chicago for 13 years based in the worse part of town. What you learn about some folks. We left the Tipsy Turtle and decided to go the Palms almost across the street from our sub-division. A band was playing and it was ladies night so Sunshine Cindy got to drink for free. While there we ran into the real Turtle. He was out and about for the evening. It was nice chatting with him for a while. We also talked to Brian from St. Louis for a while. It’s his first time in Destin and he loves it here. But why wouldn’t he!

Busy weekend on tap. The town will fill up even more for the 4th of July holiday. Get out and enjoy it. A full report will be posted Monday! See ya then….

Katie Couric hangs out with Jimmy Buffett

Posted in Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on Katie Couric hangs out with Jimmy Buffett

From a post on the BN Discussion Board: Watching my local news in Chicago, and the ABC Station had an interview with Katie Couric, who is promoting her show that debuts this fall. She was at last night’s concert (they showed her backstage with Jimmy, and practicing part of a dance routine with Tina), who she described as one of her favorite people. She said they are working on a project “You Only Live Once”, and it sounds like it is going to make it possible for people to do something on their bucket list, not a lot of detail, but she was pretty clear that he was going to be involved in this.

Debby does Destin

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on Debby does Destin

Here Comes Debby

We have our first tropical storm of the year in the gulf. Debby is just kind of spinning in the gulf. We are not sure where it is going. It will be a big rain maker and the Worry…I mean Weather Channel has something to do the next few days. We have already seen the master of doom, Jim Cantore show up in Pensacola. Time to run screaming from the coast.

But before this hits we were out and about the last few days. Thursday evening we joined thousands of tourist on the harbor to watch the fireworks show they do every Thursday. The people down to watch this show is amazing. Traffic was terrible. We watched it from the Turtle. Met a tourist from Cleveland, Larry, who is in town for a week. Fun guy who lives in the same neighborhood my Dad grew up in. Small world. We also talked to a couple from Atlanta who are staying on their boat. Cool.

Friday was going to be a laid back day. We went down to the harbor about 4:00. Headed to Crab Island Cantina for a drink and to talk with Dominic. We met a guy who is helping with a new venture where they rent out time on a jet pack kind of device on the water. It shoots you straight up 30 or 40 feet. Looks like fun. We might work out a deal for a ride in exchange for some advertising on our web site. We left the Cantina and went to Crazy Lobster. I wanted a Abita beer. We talked to the manager who we have not seen in a while. From there we went to Tipsy Turtle where we met Julie, Suzanne and dozens of new friends. Matt was in rare form behind the bar. It was a fun time there with Matt and Mindy playing.

Saturday was our beach cleanup. A good crowd came out to clean up and party the rest of the day. We had brief rain shower in the first hour there then it cleared up nicely. A new friend from Louisiana, Steve came out. He was joined by his wife Tami one of his son’s. Steve found out about us from my web site. I have a new reader! About 3:00 the skies darkened again. We decided to pack it in before we got soaked again.  Just as the last of us finished loading up it started to pour again. Wayne, Judie, Kelly, Steve and Sunshine Cindy and myself decided to go to KC’s Sandbar for some food. There was a Latin Festival going on at the Landing. With the rain, people were everywhere. It took us about 20 minutes to find a place to park. We had a nice time sitting upstairs with Bridget taking care of us.

Sunday was a wash out thanks to Debby. Sunshine Cindy I did some chores around the house. I called my brother Ken and wished him a happy 93rd birthday. I am older but look really young for my age! LOL  Monday night was spent at Friday’s in Ft. Walton Beach due to a wreck on the Brooks Bridge. Traffic was backed up so I called Wayne and caught him on the way home and had him divert before he was stuck. It was good having some time to catch up with him.

Debby is missing Destin for the most part. Sun out today and only wind to put up with. Enjoy your week. See ya Thursday….
