Destin changes….

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on Destin changes….

The changes to Destin keep getting announced. Over the last few days it was announced the Holiday Inn in Destin is going to undergo a full transformation. When this place was built in 1971, it was one of the first high rise buildings in Destin. It is a distinctive round building that is hard to miss. An East building was added in 1981. They will keep the tower but tear down everything else. The tower will be renovated and new buildings will go up. They are adding a giant swimming pool with a lazy river. This is a major construction project for the city.

Also the Island Golf Center on Okaloosa Island is undergoing a change too with zip lines, a restaurant and other amenities being built. Not to be outdone the Gulfarium is also adding a zip line and some new attractions on the island. Finally Destin Commons is adding over 100k square feet of retail space. Some new entertainment project is planned to go in there too. I don’t have any inside info on what that might be yet. Wow!

Monday is usually one of our quiet evenings but not this week. Sunshine Cindy and I went to help celebrate Matt’s son’s 4th birthday. It was held at the Tipsy Turtle. A perfect spot for kids with all the sand  for them to play in. The kids had fun and the grownups were able to have a few beers. We also dropped off the flyers for the upcoming Sloppy Joe Cook-Off we are having at the Turtle on Oct. 13th. We already have some folks registered. That should be fun.

We have also heard Sago Sport Bar at the Palms is bringing back to Destin the band “Synergy.” This is the original members including Mike and Ike plus they will have Ron “Elvis” Adams performing with them. They will be playing Wednesday’s night starting October 3rd. If you remember them from back at the old original Harry T’s then you won’t want to miss them on Wednesday’s at Sago!

Tuesday and Wednesday evening we spent it at home working on Crab Island Mambo stuff. We have announced the Sloppy Joe Cook-Off we are co-sponsoring with Tipsy Turtle on the web site now. We also plan to be on the harbor during the Destin Seafood Festival Oct 5-7 at the Turtle with some of our merch. Stop by and see us and grab an ice cold beer for both events.

Tonight we will be out watching the Browns play on Thursday night football. Not sure where we will go yet. So many places around here to watch sports. Plus we have friends who want us to stop at the Rotten Apple too. Matt and Mindy are playing from 5-9.

I saved the best for last. It continues to be a rumor but we have heard it from so many people that I think it will happen. We have thought Lulu’s was going to take over the old Lucky Snapper building at Harborwalk. We have heard this for the past year. Now it looks like big brother Jimmy Buffett is going to open a Margaritaville there instead. It has not been confirmed yet but from all the chatter I have heard I believe it will happen. How cool will that be to have a Margaritaville on our harbor! We shall see.

Have a great weekend. See ya Monday!

The Destin locals time!

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on The Destin locals time!

It was a busy weekend. No time to waste so let’s get right to it. It started Thursday with Tiffany, Sunshine Cindy and her parents going to the harbor for the afternoon. They started with lunch at Dewey Destin’s. The food was okay but nothing to write home about. They walked down to Crab Island Cantina and had some Margarita’s. They always do a great job with them if you upgrade the tequila. They all had a good afternoon. That evening Sunshine Cindy, Tiffany and myself went to Sago Sports bar. We watched some football and had some dinner. It was a perfect evening on their patio. We ran into Tim the barber. He was celebrating his 25th year being in business in Destin. And I do mean he was celebrating!

Friday the ECPHC was sponsoring a dolphin/sunset cruise on the Seablaster. Sunshine Cindy was going and I was going to wait for her and the crew at the Tipsy Turtle were Jan was playing. Cindy and I grabbed some food at the Crazy Lobster and I had my Abita beer fix. Kenny came in. He was going on the boat too. The folks on the boat had a blast. They passed the Turtle hooting and hollering. Of course free beer and wine will do that.

Meanwhile at the Turtle a good crowd was there. Rick, Charlene and even Bart from Banana Bart’s fame was having a few drinks. Tommy and the usual gang was around the bar and Matt was behind it. Not too long after I got there and set up our Crab Island Mambo merch some nicely dressed people came in. It turns out Turtle (Eric) and his girlfriend were going to get married on a pontoon boat at sunset. That was a surprise to everyone. They had a perfect evening for it though. About the time the pontoon boat pulled back in the Parrotheads from the Seablaster also descended on the Tipsy Turtle.

The Parrotheads were feeling no pain. A big crowd of them come down from the boat and partied with us. We also had friends of Crab Island Mambo show up. At one point there had to be close to a hundred folks hanging out. Way too many to mention. Kirby was the bar-back and he was running like crazy. As the evening wore on the fun continued. Judie was trying to dance with every person that walked by. Kenny got the hiccups and could not get rid of them. Jan invited Dennis to join him. Dennis is home for a few weeks from Afghanistan. He enjoyed himself. Jan even let him do a few songs by himself. That was cool. It was a fun evening.

Sunshine Cindy and I decided to head to Grand Boulevard in Sandestin on Saturday. We had some friends join us as we hit Tommy Bahamas for a few drinks. James was behind the bar. He took good care of us. He wanted me to mention each Wednesday at Helen Back on the island they have a foosball league. Anyone that wants to play just needs to show up. It sounds like fun. From there we went to Cantina Laredo. We had their fresh guacamole. They slice up the avocado’s and mix it all right at the table. It was really good.

We took off to get to the beach and Pompano Joe’s for sunset. It was a picture perfect sunset. Howard Livingstone is not the only one with post card type scenery.  LOL  There was a wait to eat there so we went down the beach to the Crab Trap. There was a wait here too but we sat at the bar on the  beach to wait. Not a bad way to wait. Rita was behind the bar and mentioned how busy they were all day. We even saw Roy behind the bar. He used to be at Friday’s in Destin. We had a great meal and enjoyed many laughs.

The weather all weekend was great but Sunday was perfect. Clear blue skies and lower humidity made for a great day to be out and about. Sunshine Cindy and I stopped in at Landshark Pizza for some wings. A good crowd was in there eating and watching football. We talked to Pops for a while about the good weekend they were having at the Tipsy Turtle. They hosted a kickoff for the Seafood festival with a big crowd on Saturday. We also talked to Kent. He moved to Destin a couple of years ago from Miami. He was rooting for the Dolphins. It was like a family in there.

We left, went back home and got Precious. We were taking her with us down to the harbor. She was excited to get to go for a ride. At the Turtle was Rusty and a few others. Matt was behind the bar. Tommy showed up bummed about the Saints losing again. Missy came with her dogs so Precious had some playmates although she mostly ignored them. Jan and Loujean came in. They had been at the Pointe. A bad wreck on Okaloosa Island had traffic that way snarled for hours. Tiffany came to join us to let the traffic die down. It was a relaxing evening under the stars. Precious was wore out by the time we got home. A perfect close to another great Destin weekend!

Enjoy your week. See ya Thursday!

Entertaining the Buffetts in Sydney

Posted in Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on Entertaining the Buffetts in Sydney

From TheAge.com.au (by Charles Waterstreet): “A buffet of anxiety, anyone?

Jane and Jimmy Buffett were flying into Sydney to visit daughter Delaney, on exchange for a semester studying criminology. Jimmy and Jane are the king and queen of comfort and southern hospitality. An immediate sense of panic gripped my insides when my ex-wife – first wife, last wife, mother of my only child – instructed me to look after them.

The Buffetts have been super generous to my former wife and our son. I once attended a concert immediately after the 30-hour flight from Sydney to New York’s Jones Beach Stadium to see Harrison sitting on Jimmy’s shoulders on stage, singing Margaritaville. The Buffetts are the ultimate entertainers on and off stage. Now my mission was to entertain them in Sydney for three nights, culminating in getting some interesting Sydney people around the table on the final night. Just to make things harder, I was in a difficult case, preparing for an even more difficult case, and I was absolutely skint.

Syan suggested Green Dragon, a hot fusion place 20 metres from my home. It was impossible to book, but when I waved the day’s paper about the world’s third-richest singer – under a Beatle and before Bruce Springsteen and Lady Gaga – a table suddenly turned up.

Immediately in the restaurant, Jimmy’s face rearranged itself, the lines all facing down. The noise shattered the musician’s tender eardrums. It was like Kingsford Smith at the height of the holidays. I let the waiter choose the food. A tasting menu – I was prepared to eat a menu at this stage. Conversation continued as if shouting docking instructions to a tugboat. The first course of jellyfish came and went down. The second course required patrons to more or less make their own sandwich rolls of the lettuce leaves. I managed to make one that resembled an IED when Syan screamed and jumped up from the common seat, ”A slug! A slug!” The slug was passing across her lettuce wrap like a fat snake, bunching up in the belly and spreading out like Ian Thorpe in his heyday. The Buffetts rose like rockets. I got up but couldn’t take my eye off the slug, which must have heard us above the clanging of the room, because it stopped dead in its slimy tracks and reared up on its haunches like a stallion.

The Buffetts are health conscious to the point of paranoia. No gluten. No fries. No pies. They intend to live forever or die in the attempt. The manager came out horrified. I suggested the Buffetts ring David Berg, the red-hot US attorney. This was the end of my red-carpet treatment at the Green Dragon.

Our sit down interview with this week’s Featured Artist – Jim Hoehn

(TRB)Where are you based these days?
(JH) Brookfield, Wis. (suburban Milwaukee)

(TRB)Do you have a Regular Gig where your fans can always find you?
(JH) No regular gigs. On the road one weekend per month as work, family, life permits. Augment with local gigs and opening act slots.

(TRB)Do you have any current projects in the works?
(JH) No current project. Released latest CD, “Silhouette of a Fool,” in April.

(TRB)What was your major influence for pursuing a career in Trop Rock?
(JH) Jerry Jeff Walker

(TRB)And the question everyone asks, with such a variance of answers. Who are/were your musical influences now and getting started?
(JH) Was always a writer (career journalist), but not a musician. Won a songwriting contest. Listened to all kinds of music, but major influences were storytellers – Jerry Jeff; early Jimmy Buffett; John Prine; Steve Goodman: Gordon Lightfoot.

(TRB)Who, if possible, would you like to perform with?
(JH) Guy Clark

(TRB)What is the one place that you have on your Bucket List of Venues to play?

(TRB)Tell us about your most memorable performance.
(JH) Most memorable performance – first public appearance. Winning a songwriting contest and walking out on stage at Milwaukee’s Summerfest armed with 9 original songs, an acoustic guitar and a bad case of nerves in front of several thousand people.

(TRB)What is the best way for your fans to stay in touch?
(JH) I don’t have a fan club. However, I have a lot of friends I’ve met through music. Best is my website at www.jimhoehn.com or right here via Facebook.

The Conch Republic Band

Posted in Trop Rock Artists, Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on The Conch Republic Band

  Conch Republic
A little bit Rock and Roll…
A little bit Sand and Soul!

CONCH REPUBLIC is a “Trop Rock” or beach band (often referred to as a Jimmy Buffett tribute band)  and the recipient of  the 2010 and 2011 Rising Star Award for Top Beach Band by GigMasters.com, the number one online booking venue for world-class performers. . The CONCH REPUBLIC show is high-energy and focuses on crowd participation.  Since 2006, this “band of pirates” has been “bringing the beach” to  fans  across the mid-west and southern states including venues such as Margaritaville Key West, Cheeseburger In Paradise in OH; parrot head events in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina,  and Illinois;  festivals, winerys, and  corporate events across Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Virginia and Ohio; ; and casinos in Mississippi where we had the honor of opening for the Beach Boys.  And now CONCH REPUBLIC is ready  to travel any distance to bring  the beach party to YOU!

We offer two primary options when booking the band. We do our best to tailer  each show to fit your event and budget. Please contact us to discuss your event and allow us to work with you on what we can do to customize a show that will make your event a HUGE success!

CONCH REPUBLIC:

This is the party you want! Not just a band, we make it a party! First, we set the stage with a colorful  back-drop, tons of beachy decorations, and up to 10 musicians (including vocals, electric guitar, keyboards, acoustic guitar, ukulele, steel drums, congass,  bongos, full drum kit,  all kinds of other fun percussion instruments,   bass, vocals and dancers/backup singers) for a very FULL sound and exciting performance. Next, we add lots of fun and games with conga lines, hula hoops, a limbo set, beach balls and more! Our set list includes all your tropical and beach  favorites to bring the island feel to your event! ! We even slip in a few other “party” favorites to keep everyone singing along and out on the dance floor!
CONCH ON THE HALF SHELL:

“Conch On The Half Shell” is a lively, acoustic show made up of four or five  musicians of the band CONCH REPUBLIC. Their music includes a blend of congas, steel drums, other percussion, vocals, ukulele and acoustic guitar, which instantly takes you down to the islands!   Whether it be a Hawaiian luau or Caribbean beach party, “Conch On The Half Shell” has the tropical sounds and high energy sto bring the party to life! With island music from Jamaica to Tahiti – from Jimmy Buffett to the Beach Boys – they have the perfect blend for Trop Rock fun!  Still the fun, beachy songs you love, but unplugged and without the beach back-drop,  lights, and beachie props. This show works great for smaller clubs or venues where there is not much space. This show is performed with a smaller sound system that is suitable for  smaller venues or events on a smaller budget.

Aloha!!

The Conch Republic Annual Publication is our attempt at an informative (and humorous)   communication to let our fans and potential clients know a bit more about whom we are, what we are up to, and a little bit about why we do what we do.   OK, so we HOPE to get one out to you more often than “annually”, but in case our schedule gets so busy that we can’t keep up, we have only promised once a year!

Tequila and SUN-ora

We promise not to over-load your in-box with tons of repetitive information and boring updates. We don’t “check-in” every time we run to the store or stop for a drink…  (That could get us in TROUBLE!)  Our preference is not to focus on US, but on our community, our clients and our fans.  We hope this and all editions of “The Latest C.R.A.P.” bring a smile to your face and a bit of joy to your day.

Sincerely,
Conch Republic Band

International Talk like a Pirate Day – September 19th, 2012!
Avast, ye maties! A fine day be approachin’ and ye had better keep a weathered eye!
If ye scallywags be searchin’ for a port (for supplies and pillage and plunder) the pirates of the Conch Republic will be plunderin’ at one of their favorite port o’ call – The Boat House at the Regatta. 5pm be the time! Capt’n Tommy Tsunami, Scallywag SUNora, and Pirate Panama be searchin’ for the rum barrels  Yo, Ho haul  together, hoist the colors high!  Yo Yo – Yo Ho A Pirate’s Life For Me!  Savvy!?!
Talk Like a Pirate: (From the web)
Pirate lingo is rich and complicated, sort of like a good stew. But if you just want a quick fix, a surface gloss, a “pirate patina,” if you will, here are the five basic words that you cannot live without. Master them, and you can face Talk Like a Pirate Day with a smile on your face and a parrot on your shoulder, if that’s your thing.
Ahoy! – “Hello!”
Avast! – Stop and give attention. It can be used in a sense of surprise, “Whoa! Get a load of that!” which today makes it more of a “Check it out” or “No way!” or “Get off!”
Aye! – “Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did.”
Aye aye! – “I’ll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over.”
Arrr! – This one is often confused with arrrgh, which is of course the sound you make when you sit on a belaying pin. “Arrr!” can mean, variously, “yes,” “I agree,” “I’m happy,” “I’m enjoying this beer,” “My team is going to win it all,” “I saw that television show, it sucked!” and “That was a clever remark you or I just made.” And those are just a few of the myriad possibilities of Arrr!
Arrrgh! – “I’m VERY miffed.”
