The tourist are back in Destin

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on The tourist are back in Destin

The light switch has been thrown and the tourist are back in town. Of course, over the Memorial Holiday Weekend the town was packed. It was more crowded than anyone can remember. That means the summer season is going to be off the charts. This week I can already see the impact on my drive home. Harborwalk Village has events each Tuesday and Thursday nights. Those nights are going to be terrible traffic wise as the Emerald Grande is already packed. This past Tuesday was the start and it added about 10 minutes to my drive already. Oh well, patience is the key word.

Monday being the holiday Sunshine Cindy and I were both off. We decided to go down to the harbor and hang out for a while in the afternoon. Our first stop was the Freaky Tiki. Susan was working the bar. We talked to her and Craig the owner. Things were slow on the harbor as most people were out on boats.

Sunshine Cindy and I walked down to Crab Island Cantina. Kyle was working and Loren came by to say hello. We sat watching the boats on the water and chatting with some other folks around the bar. What a great spot to watch the world go by. One couple we talked to were locals. Turns out the wife went to high school with the guy who hired me. Small world. We had some great food and headed back down the harbor.

Passing by AJ’s I heard someone calling me. It was Sami. She was with Barry and Austin enjoying the afternoon. We had not seen her since we announced our engagement. She was excited for us. As we walked by the Tipsy Turtle, they were just setting up for the evening. We said a few hello’s and decided to stop back at Freaky Tiki. Just after we got there Scott and Bonnie pulled up on Scott’s Harley. Bonnie was taking over behind the bar for the night.

We had a great night there. It was slow so we all had time to cut up and have fun. We made a few trips to the Boathouse. I saw “Bacon Strip” there. I can’t remember how he got that nickname but it is unique. A guy who’s name I can’t remember (but I know he runs several liquor stores) came up with his Great Dane. “Baby Girl” was a sweet dog. We had a fun time there. We left and made one more stop on the way home at Malibu Jack’s. I still think this place has potential.

Tuesday we stayed in to catch our breaths after the hectic holiday weekend. I got to watch the hockey game as the LA Kings moved on as they won game seven.

Wednesday was another stay-at-home night. Sunshine Cindy got caught up on Crab Island Mambo bookkeeping. I worked on the end of the month pictures I will be posting from our activities. I watched the Blackhawks and Red Wings hockey game. We have some good friends from Chicago that live and die with the Blackhawks. Chicago won so they can live a little longer. LOL

The old Holiday Inn is completed demolished. Nothing but rubble being hauled away. You know Destin is growing up when they tear down a high rise to build a bigger one. And to think Destin didn’t even have electricity until almost 1950. The town has come a long way in a short period of time.

Don’t forget to check out our Tee Shirts. Everyone can have a piece of Crab Island and Destin everywhere they go. Some of our shirts have made it to Spain and Canada. That is so cool. If you are in Destin on vacation send us a message and we will hand deliver it to you. Can’t beat that.

Have a great weekend! It’s Billy Bowlegs time in Fort Walton Beach. Have fun and I will see ya Monday!

‘Margaritaville’ the Most Lucrative Song Ever

Posted in Jimmy Buffett News, Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on ‘Margaritaville’ the Most Lucrative Song Ever

From Bloomberg BusinessWeek: “Welcome to ‘Margaritaville,’ the Most Lucrative Song Ever

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie cut the ribbon on Thursday outside Atlantic City’s newest tourist attraction: Margaritaville. The $35 million, 40,000-square-foot complex houses two restaurants, multiple bars, a beach-themed casino, and several breezy, laid-back retail stores—all tucked away in a larger gambling mecca called Resorts. The singer and songwriter of the eponymous song was conspicuously absent from the festivities. For Jimmy Buffett, the grand opening was no special occasion: The Atlantic City outpost is the 27th Margaritaville in the world.

Margaritaville Enterprises, founded in 2006 and based in Orlando, sells everything from beachwear to furniture and also oversees at least one Caribbean island resort, two American resorts, and four casinos. You can buy Margaritaville rum and combine it with a Margaritaville drink mixer in your very own Margaritaville blender that costs $349.99. According to the Orlando Business Journal, the company brought in at least $100 million in revenue in 2007. As a private company, Margaritaville doesn’t release information about its holdings, but by all accounts it has only expanded since then.

As a recording, Margaritaville doesn’t post stratospheric numbers. After debuting on Buffett’s 1977 album Changes in Latitude, Changes in Attitude, it peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 100 charts. According to the 2012 BBC documentary The Richest Songs in the World, Margaritaville doesn’t crack the top 10, which is populated by three Christmas songs. The two highest-ranking pop songs are You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling, by the Righteous Brothers, and Yesterday, by the Beatles. (No. 1 was Happy Birthday to You.) “If you want to get technical, there are two Margaritavilles,” says Brauneis. “There’s the copyright that protects the song, which is valuable because of the stream of income. Then there’s the trademark that has developed out of the song’s title, and legally that’s a different piece of intellectual property.”

Memorial Day Weekend in Destin

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on Memorial Day Weekend in Destin

It was a crazy weekend here in Destin. I headed to Landshark Pizza Thursday night to hang out for a while. Paige and the team took good care of everyone. A good crowd was there. T was running a lot of delivery orders and the place had a good vibe to it.

Friday was when it started to get wild. Sunshine Cindy had to work so I decided to head to the harbor to see how many tourist were already in town. My first stop was actually a detour. I saw Bonnie working the Freaky Tiki bar so I stopped in. They have any beer 2 for 5 dollars. I talked to Bonnie about how things were going when Kerby walked by. He came in for a while too. I left there and walked to see if Matt was at the charter booth. He wasn’t so I headed in the other direction to Crab Island Cantina. Loren was behind the bar and there was a steady stream of folks coming in and out. A lot of boats were heading out to Crab Island already as it was a perfect day.

I walked back towards Freaky Tiki and as I passed the old Tipsy Turtle Matt was there. It turns out Sherry has just bought the place and Matt will be back there behind the bar. They hoped to be open later in the day. That is so cool. I made it back to the Freaky Tiki and had a good relaxing time there. I talked to Craig the owner about maybe doing some advertising and I helped them move some stuff as they are still getting set up.

When Sunshine Cindy got off work I headed home to pick her up. The Parrotheads had a phlocking at Mangoes by the Bayou. Jeff and the Camaro’s were playing. A big crowd showed up and over $750 was raised for Moore OK. A great job by everyone there. Some folks headed to Fokkers to hear JB play but Sunshine Cindy and I stopped in at Sago. Stephanie was working the outside bar. We grabbed a table near the pool. It was a picture perfect evening.

Saturday Sunshine Cindy and I went ring shopping. We had thought about going to Key West to try and find a tropical type of set for us as that is what we want. The first place we stopped at in Destin turned out to be quite the find. Emerald Lady jewelry was the place. The owners moved the store to Destin from Key West about two years ago. So we found our KW place right here. We are pretty sure we have found what we want. We wanted to sleep on it for a few days so we will see.

We left and headed to Johnny O’s for some lunch. While we were sitting at the bar someone came in and said I knew I would find some Parrotheads in here. It was Kerry. We had not seen Kerry in many months. We all sat, ate and got caught up. It was a nice time.

Bobby and Darla had their Memorial Day party. They have been putting this on for 18 years now to celebrate all the service members active, retired and deceased. It’s is a big time with tons of crawfish, music and good friends. A group of us decided to go to the harbor to see Matt when we left the party. It was like we picked right back up where we were last summer. The harbor was jumping and everyone had a good time. We made one last stop at Freaky Tiki and called it a night.

Sunday the party’s continued. Crab Island Mambo had Jan Patton playing for us at Landshark Pizza. Pops was cooking crawfish and the party was jumping. A big crowd partied on the sidewalk as we listened to Trop Rock music. As the party wound down, a group of us headed to Julie’s to swim and relax in her pool. It was the perfect end to the day.

Don’t forget to take a moment today and say a few prayers for those brave souls that have and are fighting for our right to be in this great country. Thank you to each and every one of you!!!

See ya Thursday!

Margaritaville opens today in Atlantic City

Posted in Jimmy Buffett News, Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on Margaritaville opens today in Atlantic City

From the Courier-Post: “Buffett bets on A.C. – New Margaritaville complex part of massive Resorts Casino renovation

Fran and Rita Schafer drove three hours from Sussex County Thursday to dine in the newest Margaritaville Café, in Resorts Casino Hotel.

The café, along with the other elements of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville complex that span both sides of the boardwalk, got the grand opening treatment from Gov. Chris Christie and other dignitaries.

“We’re retired so we travel full time and we enjoy going to different Margaritaville Cafes,” said Frank Schafer, who raised his children in Vernon. “The first thing I noticed about this was how well thought out this one is with different compartments.”

The $35 million Margaritaville, which supplied 600 new jobs, is one of 14 around the country. It also includes a 160-slot casino, the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar, a gift shop and a first-ever coffee shop. Across the boardwalk, the LandShark Bar Grill sprawls over the beach.

The LandShark, the last component to open its doors, becomes the only beach bar open year round.

“This place is a fun example of what Atlantic City is all about,” Christie said inside the café, whose décor screams palm tree-laden beach.

“I feel renewed enthusiasm. We were presented with an opportunity we never asked for with Superstorm Sandy. We get to hold on to tradition, and hit the reset button to do things differently. New Jersey is back and ready for the summer.”

The complex opens in a resort city in need of a boost.

An article in Atlantic City Weekly: “Preview: Wasting Away in Margaritaville

The new Margaritaville themed complex at Resorts will be rolling out its sandy red carpet for the public at large Memorial Day Weekend.

The Five O’clock Somewhere Bar right by the Boardwalk entrance is already open, along with a gift shop featuring Margaritaville items for sale.

Resorts and Margaritaville hosted a special sneak preview yesterday, May 18, so Parrotheads and members of the media could check out the flip-flop friendly decor, the cheeseburger-in-paradise sliders being passed around and of course the margaritas and LandShark Beer.

My first impression was that the LandShark will be everything it is cracked up to be. The ambiance is perfect for this region, a laid-back fun vibe and a beautiful view of the ocean. It’s got tons of space and multiple entrances to the beach. I can imagine surfers and the rest of the daytime beachgoers walking right from the sand into the inviting decor and grabbing a LandShark brew.

As Jimmy Buffett said when the Margaritaville complex was announced, “Parrotheads will have a place to roost in Atlantic City.”
