A Weekend at Margaritaville Beach Hotel and Landshark Landing

IMG_2399Mary and I recently spent the weekend at the Margaritaville Beach Hotel in Pensacola Beach, FL. If I were to to tell you that we were amazed, that would be an understatement. We purchased the Romance Package (only $99 extra) and we were welcomed in our room with Champagne, Chocolate Covered Strawberries, and two complimentary Margaritaville etched Champagne flutes. IMG_2297After we settled into our room from a long day of traveling, we headed over to (Round 1) Landshark Landing.  We then tried nearly all of the appetizers that were on the menu. We indulged in Buffalo Wings, Chile Con Queso Nachos (Volcano Chile, Queso Cheese Sauce, Tomatoes, Jalapenos, and Green Onions), and 1/2 Pound of Landshark Shrimp. We probably should have stopped at the mountain of Nachos, but what is the fun in that?

While we were there, we visited with the night’s entertainment, The CalypsoNuts. Mary and I shared several Landsharks (two of which were complimentary of the hotel) with Lynley and Robbie, from The CalypsoNuts discussing Trop Rock and Reggae Music. We went back to our room for a bit while the band set up. Upon our return, The CalypsoNuts were in full swing and managing the crowd quite well. We sat and listened to the energetic beat and style for hours. The CalypsoNuts played several classic covers from their albums “Kiwi” and “Orange”.  Among the playlist were several of our favorites: “Ain’t No Sunshine”, “Could You Be Loved”, “Dreadlock Holiday” and “Kingston Town”  There were several Jimmy Buffett songs thrown in the mix as well.IMG_2519

After an energetic evening of The CalypsoNuts, we retired to our Bay View room. The following morning started out just as good as the previous day. Breakfast in bed from Frank and Lola Love Pensacola Cafe (included with the Romance Package), need I say more? Greeted by Room Service at 8:00am, could not have been more welcoming. I had the Bourbon Street Omelet – Blackened shrimp, crawfish, blue crab, chorizo sausage, peppers, onions, Pepper Jack cheese and sriracha hollandaise sauce. While, Mary had Vanilla Custard French Toast – With fresh strawberries and House Dulce De Leche.

We spent the remainder of the day, basking in the sun on their private beach. The beach was complete StandUp Paddle Boards, Kayaks, Chairs, Umbrellas (not our cup of tea), and many others. IMG_2374

Be sure to check the Landshark Landing calendar before booking your trip. There are definitely some amazing Trop Rock acts that you would not won’t to miss. We missed the Southern Drawl Band by one week. The Teddy Bear of Trop Rock, John Friday, has also played there. Local favorites, Steve and Sandra Youngblood, have also been known to make appearances.

We would recommend a stay at the Margaritaville Beach Hotel over any other if you are traveling to Pensacola Beach, FL. This was, without a doubt, an experience like no other. We have stayed at many of the hotels along Florida’s Northern Gulf Coast, but this one made a lasting impression.

Until our next adventure, remember to always Trop On!

It’s Sago Sports Bar Week in Destin!

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on It’s Sago Sports Bar Week in Destin!

This was a week where we spent a lot of time at Sago Sports Bar at The Palms. On Monday Sunshine Cindy and I met Julie, Matt, Ace, Chris and Kalab there to watch the hockey game. Rhett was there when we walked in. He loved our Crab Island Mambo tee shirts and ordered three from us. That was cool. Tommy had us all set up in front of the 100 inch TV’s. Izzy waited on us and took good care of us while we watched the game.

What a great game it was. Chicago came back to score two goals in 17 seconds with only about a minute left to win the game and the Stanley Cup. We went from planning where we would watch game 7 on Wednesday to thinking it was going to overtime to celebrating the Blackhawks win. It was a fun time with good friends.

Tuesday we stayed in. I was able to get more Mambo computer work done. Wednesday we were back at Sago delivering the tee shirts Rhett ordered. He lives in the condo. We got there and sat at the bar. Stephanie was working the bar. Rhett came down and picked up his shirts. Wednesday’s is ladies night at Sago. They had a live band playing outside and a DJ setting up inside for late night dancing. A decent crowd was coming in. Ladies drink free from 7 pm so that is a good draw. Tommy came and sat next to us. He was in rare form cutting up with everyone.

Tommy pointed out the Auburn football helmet they have on the wall. It was just autographed by Bo Jackson. It turns out Tommy and Bo are old friends. Bo has been going out on Tommy’s dads charter fishing boat since he was in college and he and Tommy became good friends. Bo was in town last week. Tommy had pictures of all them having dinner at Boschamps Oyster House and then back at Sago. Tommy says Bo is just a down to earth great guy who happens to have been voted the best athlete ever!

Crab Island Mambo is working on bringing in some Trop Rockers over the next few months. We have The Teddy Bear of Trop Rock, John Friday playing at Crab Island Cantina on July 20th from 3-7 pm. Put this date on your calendar as John always does a great show. We are working on a few other things too. I will announce them as they get firmed up.

I have seen some pictures from the new Monkey Hut bar that opened on the harbor. It looks like it is going to be a fun place. Other than that place opening, everyplace else is going full blast as the town is packed to the gills with tourist. This weekend will see a big group come into town for the 4th of July holiday. Time to get some patience!!!

Have a great weekend. See ya Monday!!!

Buffett purchases another home in Palm Beach

Posted in Jimmy Buffett News, Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on Buffett purchases another home in Palm Beach

From Trulia: “Jimmy Buffett Picks Up A Third Palm Beach Home For $1.3 Million

Jimmy Buffett has a penchant for “Paradise!” According to property records, the Margaritaville crooner paid $1.3 million for his third property in a ritzy Palm Beach neighborhood. This new home is likely to be used by the multimillionaire as a guesthouse, as it’s located directly across the street from a home he bought for $802k in 2002.

Buffett’s new home is close to the beach and has 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths and 3,100 square feet. It also features hardwood floors, a chef’s kitchen, custom closets and Palm Beach must-haves: a private patio and balcony.

Buffett has made millions after decades of touring, as well as other ventures that include the successful “Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise” restaurant chains and Land Shark Lager beer. He’s plowed a significant amount of money into real estate. Aside from the two homes he now owns across the street from each other, Buffett also owns a much larger Palm Beach residence that he paid nearly $5M for in 2011, 3 side-by-side homes in Sag Harbor, NY and a Caribbean villa on the island of St. Barth.

Cannons used by notorious pirate Blackbeard

Posted in Pirates | Comments Off on Cannons used by notorious pirate Blackbeard

Two cannons used by notorious pirate Blackbeard to wreak terror over the seas centuries ago have been raised from the wreck of his ship.

Deep sea divers have recovered two guns from the remains of the Queen Anne’s Revenge where it rests at the bottom of the ocean off the coast of North Carolina.

A former French slave ship, it was re-named the Queen Anne’s Revenge by English-born Blackbeard after he captured it in 1717.

It was hoped the dive expedition last week would yield eight cannon, but the project was hampered by bad weather until Thursday, according to a Fox News report.

The dive was carried out as part of $450,000 scheme to remove all of the artefacts from the historic ship by the end of next year.

The Queen Anne’s Revenge was the infamous vessel commanded by English outlaw Blackbeard – who roamed the seas in the early 18th century and wore lit fuses under his hat to frighten his enemies.

Named after his flowing black beard, Blackbeard – whose real name is thought to be Edward Teach or Thatch – operated around the West Indies and the east coast of the American colonies.

In 1717, he captured a French slave ship and renamed it Queen Anne’s Revenge.

Although Blackbeard’s career lasted only two years, he was the world’s most feared pirate and once held hostage the entire city of Charleston, South Carolina.

In 2011, crews also salvaged an anchor from the wreckage.

The anchor is 11 feet, 4 inches long with arms that are 7 feet, 7 inches across.

It was covered with concretion — a mixture of shells, sand and other debris attracted by the leaching wrought iron — and a few sea squirts. Its weight was estimated at 2,500 to 3,000 pounds.

Archaeologists had planned to remove the second-largest anchor, which is 13 feet long with arms that are 8 feet across, from the top of the ballast pile.

But it was too well-attached, so instead the divers went in from the side to retrieve the everyday anchor.

Blackbeard settled in Bath, North Carolina, where he eventually received a governor’s pardon.
Some experts say he grew bored and returned to piracy.

He was killed by volunteers from the British Royal Navy in November 1718, five months after the ship thought to be Queen Anne’s Revenge sank.

After running aground on a sandbar in 1718 near the town of Beaufort, North Carolina, the ship was abandoned but probably remained intact for as long as a year before collapsing and disintegrating.

Linda Carlisle, North Carolina’s cultural resources secretary, said at the time the anchor was salvaged: ‘Blackbeard and piracy are important threads in eastern North Carolina’s maritime heritage fabric.

‘The historic and economic value of this project is enormous.’

The Queen Anne’s Revenge shipwreck site, located off North Carolina’s coast, has yielded more than 250,000 artifacts and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Experts have been excavating the ship for 16 years since the area was located in 1996 by Florida company Intersal, Inc.

Destin benefit for Baby Liam

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on Destin benefit for Baby Liam

The awesome summertime in Destin continues. The big event this weekend was the benefit on Sunday for baby Liam held on the harbor at the Tipsy Turtle. At first we were not sure it was going to happen. It rained all morning. They pushed the start time back but it worked out fine. The skies cleared and a big crowd came out to support one of Destin’s own. All the local fish-heads and Mambo’ians were there. I don’t have a final figure on what was raised but it had to be several thousand dollars. A great job by Missy and Whitney putting this together.

Prior to the Sunday Funday we were busy. Thursday evening I stopped at Landshark Pizza. A ton of takeout and delivery orders were coming in as Brian, Paige and Sue ran around keeping everything going. I had a pizza and chatted with some of the folks in there. As I left, a big thunderstorm was popping up. I had the top down on Badass so I left at just the right time. There were lightning bolts all over the sky as I drove home. Mother Nature put on quite a show.

Friday Sunshine Cindy and I headed to Panama City Beach. My cousin Steve and his wife Jane were vacationing on the beach. We met them at the Barefoot Beach Club. Our Trop Rocker friend Gene Mitchell was playing. We had a great time with them. It had been several years since I had seen Steve and Jane. We laughed, drank, danced and told old stories. Steve talked to a 90 year old guy who was sitting at the bar. He was in fantastic shape. We talked to a couple that had recently joined the PCPHC. Randy and Liz were super nice folks. All in all we had a blast.

As we drove back to Destin, we decided to stop in at Fridays for a night cap and some snacks. Brittney was behind the bar. We had not seen her in a while. A guy came in and sat across the bar. Turns out it was Cajun Mike. He came and joined us. We talked and finished our snacks. It was late and time to head for home.

Saturday we didn’t have anything planned. I know, you don’t believe it. We got a lot of things done around the house but as the afternoon wore on we got the itch to do something. We decided we would go to Sago Sports Bar to watch the hockey playoff game. Julie was joining us. Sunshine Cindy and I got there first and noticed the bar was packed with people in suites and black dresses. It was a private party for Edmund James. Okay, time for plan B.

We called Julie and we decided to head to Landshark Pizza to watch the game. She U-turned and got there first. We had a great seat at the bar with a big TV right next to us. We stayed and watched the entire game. It was a great game that went right down to the wire. Between Sue, Kenny, Trish and Bree, they kept everyone in the place happy. A lot of food and drinks were being consumed. Chicago won the game. I have a lot of Chicago friends so I am rooting for them. One more game to go.

Sunday we stopped at the Freaky Tiki Bar after we left the Turtle. Ricki was behind the bar. Wade was doing a shrimp boil. Scotty and some of the local “Harbor Dock Queens” were in there. Wayne was with us and we talked about Sunshine Cindy and my wedding plans a little. The night was real nice. We walked back to the car. Tim from Aloha Pontoon rentals let me park Badass in his lot so we had a convenient upfront spot. On the way home we passed the ice cream place Shakes. I could not believe how busy it was. There must have been 50 people there. Wow!

This weekend there was a Blue Marlin fishing tournament out of Baytowne Wharf. A 613 pound monster was caught. What a fish that was. Also this weekend the Monkey Hut bar opened. It is where the old KJ’s was down on the harbor. We will get by there soon and give an update. I also heard Johnny O’Quigley’s has changed their menu and name. They are now O’Quigley’s Seafood and Steamer. They will have a lot of seafood on the menu. I am interested to see how that goes with the sports bar theme they have.

We are getting ready to head to Sago Sports Bar to watch tonight’s hockey game. Have a great week. See ya Thursday….

Computer Rants, Meet Me In The Keys, Gigs and Places to Stay in Key West!

Computer Rants, Meet Me In The Keys, Gigs and Places to Stay in Key West!
Computer Rants
photoIMG_7929_zpsa087ce05.jpgIt’s good to be back! My old computer fried the motherboard, which destroyed it. I was able to save the documents out of the hard drive to my new computer, thanks to the computer store here in Key West (Office Max) but I’ll be damned if I know where they ended up! I had a blog started when the old computer crapped out, but I haven’t a clue if I know where it is. Adding insult to injury, I now have Windows 8. As I explained to a friend of mine: Going from Windows 6 to Windows 7 was like moving from Alabama to NYC. There are big, but surmountable differences. Going from Windows 7 to Windows 8 is like moving from Wall Street NYC to a brothel in Bangkok. It’s an entirely different language and look indeed. What a pain in the ass. Today I find a file named “Mikel Allen”… hummm what’s that? I open it and it’s a bunch of pictures of men in tight bathing suites. Huh? I guess Mikel Allen is a gay employee of Hewlett Packard? Why is this shit in my brand new (?) computer? I deleted the file, but now, where is the recycle bin?
I also went to buy an iPod. I looked around and found the best price at site called Rakuten. I ordered it second day a week ago Saturday. So I should have gotten it Tuesday, or maybe Wednesday, if it shipped Monday. I keep checking the order and it says “Processing”. Tuesday and Wednesday roll by and no iPod. I sent several e-mail enquiries to them Monday through Wednesday, but no reply. On Thursday I finally get an e-mail from them asking me to contact them, so I called. The representative at their end of the phone was unable to explain anything whatsoever as to why my order wasn’t filled, only that I had to listen to my phone message they left to expedite the order. “Well, I’m on the phone now with you now, Rakuten having suggested me to contact you to expedite the order. What can you tell me?” He goes again “Well you have to check your phone message”. At the moment, I can’t access my phone messages, I explain. He can’t go further than that. “Really? You can’t tell me what’s the issue with my order? Your company asked me to call you to resolve this and you can’t tell me what to do?” This went on for 15 minutes and finally I told the idiot at Rakuten to cancel my order.
Two days later I get an e-mail from them stating that THEY had to cancel my order, due to the fact that they couldn’t verify my address? The address is the exact same as the billing address, what’s the problem? I volunteered that information to their idiot on the phone two days before, suspecting that maybe there was an issue there, but he said nothing. So now I get an e-mail from Rakuten saying they cancelled my order.
Frankly, I suspect that if they say they cancelled the order due to lack of contact from me, it looks much better than me canceling an order because of their sheer ineptitude, bearing in mind I’m talking of a customer satisfaction rating. Let’s make no mistake about it, I cancelled my order with them due to their ineptitude. They didn’t cancel my order, I cancelled my order. Over the years of writing this blog, I’ve never taken the opportunity to rant like this and I’ll try not to do it again! However, I urge everyone to avoid Rakuten.com like the plague.
Enough ranting! Got that off my chest!
Meet Me In The Keys!

The annual event that the Southernmost Castaways hold every year, Meet Me In the Keys went off without a hitch! Club President Tammy Hollander and her husband Marc “The Gopher”, put in tireless hours in order to make sure everything goes off without a hitch, in addition to their monthly jump ups and meetings. This year’s event was no exception either. Everything went like clockwork. One doesn’t have to be Einstein to see all of the potential hoops of fire these people and their able assistants must have to jump through. It has to be a full time job!
photobf5e6d91-72ef-48d5-abc0-2aa326470b66_zpsa8e056c8.jpgI was honored to be in this year’s event and I pulled a surprise in that I dragged Allen “Frankendread” Holland along with me to play steel pans! We played poolside at the Doubletree portion of the event, following Jimi Pappas and John Patti. As I said, I did it as a surprise. When I was asked to play, I was a solo act. Adding Allen was on me, for fun and a good treat for all who attended. Naturally I split my fee with Allen, of course.
A lot of people hadn’t heard Allen before. He uses a different pan than John Patti does, so in addition to being different players with different styles, they are also playing different pans, John with a C pan and Allen with a D pan. The notes are all in different places as well, further changing the overall style. I think everyone enjoyed hearing both players!
The night before was the meet and greet and after that a few of us ended up in room 236 and I had the pleasure of having a great, very long conversation with Jimi Pappas, whom I had never met before. My biggest disappointment was I sent him a message to get together the following week when he was at Margaritaville, only to learn that he had been there the week before! I’m looking forward to his return to the island!
I also had brief conversations with Mike Broward and Paul Roush, who played in the event. In situations like this, schedules often get in the way, so we didn’t get to chat things up as much as we may have liked. Hopefully next time they’re in town we can spend a bit more time together!
Howard Livingston was generous enough to actually cut his gig short at Schooner Whatf, in order to have a songwriter’s showcase of performers in the Meet Me in the Keys event. Had a great time too. What a blast! Thanks Howard! I was on with local performers Ericson Holt and Roger Jokela. Ericson really surprised me. For those of you who are familiar with my song “Island Blue”, which Misty Loggins sang for me, Ericson played keyboards. Ericson is an exquisite piano/keyboard player who made Key West his base about two years ago, by way of Nashville. Imagine my surprise when Ericson arrived with a guitar!
The event closed out on Sunday with a sunset cruise featuring new Keys arrival, Eric Stone. Let me say, if you are ever in Key West, don’t pass a chance to get out on the water! I have several songs about it, as it’s such an inspiring peaceful event. The sunset cruises go for around $35/$40 . There are all sorts of boats that go out, just head down to the waterfront area and do yourself a favor!
A quick shout out to all the readers in Italy! Thank you so much for your interest in this blog! I hope you all head to Key West and when you do, be sure to read below!
Gigs and Places to Go!!!

I’ve been playing Thursday afternoons at the Sunset Tiki Bar, 2 – 5pm. The July schedules have not been posted as of yet, however as soon as I know, I’ll be sure to post it here. What an amazing, laid back place with a true Keys attitude! The Sunset Tiki Bar is privately owned and sits in the back of The Galleon Resort with an incredible view of Westeria Island (nic-name:  Christmas Tree Island) and Tank Island (nic-name: Sunset Key). A great place any time of day! A circular Tiki Bar, right on the water and also chaise lounges you can sun out on, right on the dock! Swing by and check it out!

If you are planning on coming to Key West, be certain to check out Southernmost on the Beach! It’s a beautiful establishment with several pools and a true joy with a great Keys atmosphere! It’s in the more quiet section of Duval, so it’s great to be close enough for easy access to all of Duval, but far away enough to be able to enjoy a quiet night’s rest!

I’ll be playing there this Friday at their Pineapple Pool on June 28th noon to 3, then in the month of July every Friday at their Pineapple Pool, noon to 3 and every Saturday at their Shore Pool, again noon – 3.
If you’re coming from out of town, be sure to book at Southernmost, the concerts there are exclusive to guests!
To obtain my music, be sure to check my website for downloads and physical CDs!! This site also has material not available on other sites.

Also available on iTunes, CD Baby, CD Universe, Rhapsody, and Beachfront Radio.

Buffett peforms in Mansfield MA

Posted in Jimmy Buffett News, Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on Buffett peforms in Mansfield MA

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band resumed the “Songs From St. Somewhere” tour last night at the Comcast Center in Mansfield MA (Boston area).

The Set List from the show is now available. Some changes included “La Vie Dansante” in the acoustic set and “Tin Cup Chalice” for the final encore.

A review of the show is available from TheSunChronicle.com: “Review: Buffett brings paradise to Mansfield

Jimmy Buffett will never allow for a less than stellar show at the always soldout Comcast Center.

Who says the 66-year old “Son of a Son of a Sailor” has washed ashore?

If he did, he’s landed on one of his tropical islands “Saint Somewhere.”

Buffett and his 11-piece band of longtime family members delivered a near-flawless two dozen songs, including four of a newly constructed “acoustic” set, featuring a new song “Useless Information” about his less-than-budding career as a journalist.

During that set, Buffett picked up the ukelele for the classic “Volcano.”
