Gulf Coast Cowboy: April 30

Welcome back to the Gulf Coast Cowboy! How many of you have ever been sailing? It’s one of the most peaceful experiences you can ever have. If you ever have the chance to sail out away from the coast for a few hours, do it. It’s one of my favorite things to do! There’s nothing like letting the wind guide you and enjoying some time away from life’s troubles and your responsibilities for a little while. Heck, I bet if we all went sailing on a regular basis, everyone would be happier. This weeks episode is dedicated to the power of the wind to take up away from all of our worries. Tune in Wednesday, April 30 at 7pm on KBEC!

Buffett to perform at Coyote Drive-In

Posted in Jimmy Buffett News | Comments Off on Buffett to perform at Coyote Drive-In

On June 19, Fort Worth will be, for an evening, the center of the Parrothead universe.

From the Star-Telegraph: Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band will perform an intimate show at Coyote Drive-In as the inaugural musician in the “Live at the Drive-In” series, an idea conceived and produced by Coyote Drive-In owner-operators Brady Wood and Brandt Wood via their company, Woodhouse, in conjunction with Austin-based juggernaut C3 Presents.

“There is not another artist we’d rather be working with,” Brandt Wood says. “Jimmy has taken a personal interest — he grew up at drive-ins.”

What Wood described as “a big film crew” will be on hand during Buffett’s performance, which will be broadcast live, via DirecTV, to every participating, digitally-equipped drive-in across the country.

The concert will be a regular, full performance, according to Wood, who says this concept, which Woodhouse has been working on for the last year, is the biggest of its kind that’s ever been attempted.

Tickets for the Coyote Drive-In concert go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday via Buffett’s website or the Coyote Drive-In box office.

Ticket prices for Fort Worth were not made available Tuesday, although a Woodhouse spokesperson did say tickets would be $18 at other drive-ins nationwide. (Prices for the Fort Worth show will obviously be higher, sources said, given that it’s the site of the actual concert.) The list of the participating national drive-ins will be announced Friday.

    G. Love Special Sauce –Sugar
    Release Date: April 22nd
    glass sugar

Back in the early ‘90s, while playing the streets and bars of Boston’s music scene, a group of musicians came together, forming a band whose music stays in constant demanded from coast to coast. Now, 20 years later that ensemble, known by many as G. Love and Special Sauce, is once again touring as the original trio and recording new music together for the first time in eight years.

On the year that marks the 20th anniversary of their debut and eponymously titled album, G. Love Special Sauce will be releasing a brand new LP, titled Sugar. The record takes the “rich, warm” essence of the trio’s classic 1994 album and lays on top a modern composition of sounds, a blend of bits from G. Love’s past records and the relentless energy that pours out of the band’s live sets. Sounds that range from the Bluesy-Folk of his last record, 2011’s Avett Brothers produced Fixin’ to Die, to the gritty Hip-Hop Blues of that original record, a sound G. Love describes as “Live and raw, Down and Dirty.”

On Sugar we hear the product of G. Love and many of the influential musicians from throughout his career. Along with the return of upright bassist James “Jimi Jazz” Prescott, the record features the groups longtime touring keyboardist, Mark Boyce, laying it down on B3 organ. Adding some extra sauce, on Sugar are some very talented guests, including legendary artist, background vocalist and current Oscar nominee Merry Clayton. Some of her most note worthy tracks are iconic hits like The Rolling Stones’, “Gimme Shelter,” Lynrd Skynard’s, “Sweet Home Alabama.” Clayton was even in Ray Charles’ band as a Raylette when she was just 18 years old. Also featured on Sugar are Los Lobos’ guitarist David Hidalgo, Eric Krasno of Soulive, Marc Broussard, Shamarr Allen, Kristy Lee, and several others.

Recorded primarily at the studio of G. Love’s old friend and collaborator, Jack Johnson’s, Solar Powered Plastic Plant, Brushfire Records, Sugar was produced by legendary producers Mario Caldato and Robert Carranza. The men behind the boards on many of the Beastie Boys’ records.

Jack Johnson seems to have summed up Sugar well saying “Ever since I heard the song ‘The Things That I Used To Do’ G. Love and Special Sauce have been one of my favorite bands. I don’t know anybody that likes to write, jam, or record more than G. Love. This new album ‘Sugar’ captures that joy in the music that got me hooked on G. Love the 1st time around.”

    Fun Weekend…

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on Fun Weekend…

Sunshine Cindy and I were on the go the entire weekend. The weather was great allowing us to enjoy some great Spring days. It started on Thursday night. We made a trip to Emerald Lady Jewelry Store to pick out my wedding ring. We found a nice one and got it on order. It should be in by the end of this week.

From there we stopped at Millers Ale House for some dinner. Miller’s always has some good specials. Thursday’s they have buckets of Bud Light for $8.95. What a deal. We sat at the bar, had some food and a few drinks while watching some of the hockey game that was on. We noticed a guy across the bar with a Key West MOTM tee shirt on. Sunshine talked to him. He was a Parrot Head from Atlanta down here in Destin on vacation. We see Parrot Heads everywhere!

Friday was my off day. Sunshine Cindy and her Mom went looking for dresses for her Mom. I went down to the harbor to take some tee shirts to Harbor Gifts to refill some they had sold. My first stop was at The Crust Pizzeria to see if Charley and Brenda were ready for the Parrot Head meeting that night. It looked like everything was ready. They were excited having the PH’s there. I walked down the hill and stopped at the Marler Charter Boat booking booth. Matt was working. I talked to him for a while. I then walked over to Harbor Gifts. Sandy was there. We got them restocked. Sandy and I talked for a while about the harbor as we were enjoying the warm sunny day.

I headed home. Sunshine Cindy and I headed to The Crust a little early. Everything was ready for a fun evening. They had several servers making sure everyone had the drinks they wanted. Charley was manning the bar and he was very busy. Alan took care of us. Turns out Alan is actually one of the stilt walkers at Margaritaville. He was making balloons all night as well as making sure everyone had drinks. Coconut Radio performed for us. We had about 100 folks show up. Charley and Brenda put out a fantastic spread of food too. Pizza, Pasta, Ravioli’s…and they kept it coming.

As the night wore down, Charley came and sat with us. He appreciated all that Sunshine Cindy and I did to help him prepare for the night. He brought over some Fireball for us to celebrate with. Judie, Kelly, Wayne and Suzanne were all with us as the last Parrot Heads standing.

Saturday was a different kind of day for us. Parrot Head Rendezvous was going on in Panama City Beach. We usually register for this event but with the upcoming wedding we decided to only go on Saturday. Well, Saturday was also Sunshine Cindy’s birthday. Her family wanted her to stay home and celebrate. We compromised. I went to PCB, she partied with her family and we would go out on Sunday. I wanted to make an appearance at Rendezvous. We have a lot of friends that were there who we have not seen in a while. This was a good chance to catch up with them.

I got to the beach about noon. It was a perfect day weather wise. About 500 Parrot Heads were there on the beach having a blast. I ran into so many friends that I can’t start to name them all. Some great music was being played and many boat drinks were consumed. A special thanks to Julie, Jan and Loujean for letting me join them at their tent. I headed home about 8 pm wore out from the sun.

Meanwhile Sunshine Cindy and her daughter Tiffany went to McGuire’s for dinner. They then went down to the harbor. First stop was Harry T’s. From there they went to Crab Island Cantina, Fishheads, AJ’s and The Boathouse. They ran into friends every step of the way.

Sunday was another nice day in paradise. Sunshine Cindy and I went to Harry T’s for brunch. As we waited for a table we sat at the outside bar and talked to our Bartender of the Month, Michelle. She was working the bar. Michelle told us how thrilled she was to be named the Bartender of the Month in the Crab Island Mambo Mullet Wrapper. She was very deserving. You can read about Michelle here: http://www.crabislandmambo.com/Mullet-Wrapper-April-2014-edition.html

Time to go in and get seated. A great sea breeze was blowing in the salt air making for an enjoyable brunch. They do a good job with their brunch. From there we stopped at Crab Island Cantina. Greg was working the bar. We got to talking to some locals across the bar. They were enjoying the nice day too. We then walked down to Fishheads. Al was playing the sax. Owners Melissa and Tom were there. Melissa wanted us to try a new appetizer they will be selling. It was a smoked fish dip that was great. That will be a big hit for sure. Melissa and Tom are good people who will have a great summer season. They are right under the west end zip line tower.

We saw Matt and talked to him for a bit then also talked to Sandy at Harbor Gifts. We can’t be down there and not say hi! We made one more stop. We went to Margaritaville’s Chill Bar. Old friend Steve was working the bar. It was not too busy so we got to talk to Steve a little. He was getting off shortly and heading to work at Fud’s on the island. They had a volleyball tournament. He was looking forward to waiting on tall, good looking women! LOL We finally called it a day and headed home to get ready for the upcoming week. Sunshine Cindy enjoyed her birthday weekend!!!

Have a great week. See ya on Thursday!

    Meet Ballyhoo!’s New Bassist

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Meet Ballyhoo!’s New Bassist

April 14th, 2014 came the end of an era for a band that boasted the same line-up for 10 years when bassist J.R. Gregory announced that he would be leaving Ballyhoo! to progress to the next chapter of his life. While J.R. will be missed, the next chapter of Ballyhoo! starts with their new bassist Florida native, Nick Lucera

“I’m so happy to be a part of the Ballyhoo! family. It’s a great opportunity for me, but I have big shoes to fill. I just can’t wait to get on stage with these guys and shred some bass!” shares Nick Lucera, who moved to Maryland from Florida to join the band. He played in a couple bands that Ballyhoo! use to play with in Florida and after management put them in a room together to jam, Nick was already looking for places to live when he was offered the job.
    BallyhooNick
“He’s a really nice guy and we laugh about the same stuff. It’s gonna be fun to get to know him more once we get back on tour. Hoping he’s not a creepy sleepwalker or “white girl wasted” when he gets drunk. Only time will tell,” shares Howi Spangler, Ballyhoo! Vocalist/Lead Guitarist.

Ballyhoo!’s first show with Nick on bass will be May 9th at The Depot in York, PA.

After 10 years of playing in the same line-up, I’m sure it’ll be an adjustment for the group, but one they’re fully capable of adjusting to. While Ballyhoo! was in Denver, CO this past February, we filmed Ballyhoo! for The Pier’s Live Acoustic Series and Passafire bassist Will Kubley filled in for an absent J.R. and the performance sounded amazing.

Howi continues: “We’ve been having rehearsals for the last couple of weeks. Nick has a lot of songs to learn, but he’ll be ready for the first show May 9th.” With regards to J.R. Howi continues: “It was a pleasure to play with JR to my left for the last ten years. He has a great, melodic style that I love and I know he’ll keep music in his life in whatever path he chooses, going forward. He’s also a very good friend and it’ll be weird when we start making him buy our next albums. Ha ha!”

Little does Howi know, we had planned to give J.R. a free copy let him review it for The Pier! (Ha ha!)

We look forward to the next chapter of Ballyhoo! music with their new line-up. Nick has his work cut out for him, replacing J.R. learning a sizable collection of songs that the group put out over the last 10 years! J.R., Mista J – we at The Pier will most certainly miss you, but we’re grateful for the 10+ years of shows a whole collection of music you recorded! Best of luck to you, sir!

Here is J.R. Gregory, aka Mista J’s ‘Goodbye’ Announcement via Facebook:

“The past ten years of my life have been one wild and crazy adventure. I’ve traveled our great country coast to coast, played out at sea, had many unforgettable experiences (I’m sure there are some I’ve forgotten as well!), and played kick ass music for thousands of people. Made lifelong friends, met fascinating people, and have witnessed some extraordinary things during this 1011793_10152335982943118_6178802846774754830_nadventure. I’m very lucky and grateful to have had the experiences I’ve had with Ballyhoo!. However, after much time spent in thought and self-reflection, I’ve decided it’s time for me to progress to the next chapter in my life. This Spring, I will be leaving Ballyhoo!.

I want to thank the fans for all of their support throughout the years. Without all of you Hooligans, this would’ve never happened. Thank you, thank you, thank you, and thank you very much!

To all the great bands that I’ve been lucky enough to share the road with, thank you. You have motivated me to become a better musician and helped me keep my sanity on tour. We’ve had some damn good times together. I look forward to seeing all of you when you come through Baltimore. If you’re lucky, I’ll bring you a can of Old Bay!

Biggest of Up’s to the crew members that I’ve had the honor to work with. You guys bust your asses every night for us and keep this train a rolling! Remember, never send an idiot to do an idiot check!

Thank you to my family and friends back home. Y’all were there from the start and have never stopped pushing us to pursue our dreams. Your unconditional support has helped me through the tough times and made the good times that much better. You were the ones coming to the shows before anyone outside of Maryland knew who we were. Because of you, we were able to take this band far beyond the Free State. I can not thank you enough. I’m looking forward to being home and spending time with all of you.

Finally, thank you to my bandmates, my brothers, my family. This past decade (Holy crap, it really has been a decade!) cannot be put into words. Well it could, but I would have to write a damn novel. Ain’t nobody got time for that! So, I’ll keep it short and sweet. I love you guys. You are and will always be family to me.

Every story has an end, but in life every end is just a new beginning.

Safe travels everyone and we’ll announce my final show soon. (It’ll be in Baltimore)”

    J.R. Gregory aka Mista J.

Southern CA singer/songwriter, Micah Brown recently contacted The Pier with a new song, fresh out of the studio, titled “Roller Coaster”. He wanted to share it with The Pier Community, for FREE, this week only! Read more about Micah Brown the new song here…

    “Roller Coaster” Background:
“Roller Coaster” is the latest single released by Micah Brown. Before he puts it up for sale on iTunes, he’s giving it to you the fans for FREE, this week only. We at The Pier always enjoy the background to a song, especially while its new fresh.

Here’s what Micah Brown had to say about his new song:
“Roller Coaster” is a song that I wrote upon returning home recently from playing shows in Hawaii. I had these rhythms and melodies stuck in my head after listening to so much island reggae and Jawaiian music on the radio, and came up with idea while still in the 50th State of mind.

I brought in Stan Frazier (of Sugar Ray) to help me develop and co-produce the song with Lewis Richards, and I think he was the perfect choice to give it that little bit of pop sensibility. We are really happy with the way it turned out.

I particularly like the way the theme of the lyrics evolves slightly as the song plays out from one verse to the next, and comes full circle by the end.”

    Micah Brown Background:
Micah Brown rolled the dice and left the 9-to-5 workforce in pursuit of a full-time music career in the summer of 2010. Since then, he hasn’t looked back, accruing a colorful resume that includes: three critically-acclaimed studio releases, three Orange County Music Awards, countless North American tour dates and festival appearances, and a catalog of songwriting and performance credits as a session player at 17th Street Recording Studio in Costa Mesa, CA

Brown’s original music derives from the blues, outlaw country and rock-n-roll that drenched the garage while building hot rods with his dad growing up, largely evident in his debut EP “Down Like Hail”.

Micah’s first full-length record, “The Isle of Her”, received multiple album-of-the-year nominations following its summer 2012 release, which elaborated on a wider range of influences. The addition of reggae and surf overtones helped Brown garner an underground following of passionate, grass-roots fans; the album debuted in the Top 20 on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter chart.

Both of Micah’s first two records were produced by Lewis Richards and released under 17th Street Records.

In early 2013, Micah joined Iration as full-time guitarist and backing vocalist, just in time for a memorable summer that included shows with Steel Pulse at the Orange County Fair and The Descendents at Red Rocks Amphitheatre supporting their latest album “Automatic”.

Capping off his most productive year on the road, Brown released a limited 7-inch record featuring two brand-new songs entitled “Gambles Prospects”, available exclusively on blue-swirl vinyl through Creme Tangerine Records.

Micah’s next release is the single “Roller Coaster”, which will be available on iTunes in May of 2014.

    Destin is Paradise

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on Destin is Paradise

It’s this time of the year where the weather is perfect making Destin a paradise to live in. Day time temps are about 80 with lows in the mid 60’s. The top is down on Badass and it can stay down!

Sunshine Cindy and I got out a few times this week. Julie had some friends in town staying with her. Tim and Nancy from Tennessee and Dean from Louisiana are here. They have all became friends of ours too. Tuesday night we met them at The Boathouse. They wanted some oysters and the Boathouse has the best. We had a great time. Howling Jack was singing, Tara took good care of us and a big crowd was inside enjoying the salt air. It was a fun evening catching up with all of them.

Wednesday night Sunshine Cindy and I went to Landshark Pizza. We wanted to catch up with “B” to make sure he is able to get us the cups and napkins for our wedding. When we walked in most of the tables were full but the bar was empty. Glen and Brian were at a table. Bruce came in and BS’d with us then he also joined Glen and Brian. About 15 minutes after we got there the bar packed out and the place was jumping. It got so busy Brian had to go back and help out cooking.

Wednesday’s is wing night at Landshark. Jason was making big batches of wings as they were selling like hot cakes. A lot of pizza’s were also being made as so many people were there they ran out of places to sit. They ended up selling over 1000 wings. Wow! We hung out with B for the night. He is taking care of us and we thanked him profusely. It’s great having good friends! Other folks came and went. James and Jonelle stopped in. Jonelle showed off some pictures of a big Cobia she caught earlier in the day. I think it was about 50 pounds. A great fish. It was a fun time at Landshark.

Speaking of fish….the last several weeks have seen a big increase of huge Mako Sharks being caught in the waters off of Destin. There have been several in the 600 to 800 pound range brought in. A couple of guys in Nararre were on the beach and caught a 805 pound Mako the other day. Many of these sharks are only a couple of hundred yards off the beach. They are there all the time but almost never bother humans. The theory is the sharks are following the Cobia. Makes sense.

We also had a pod of Manatee’s swim through Destin the other day. We don’t get a lot of Manatee’s in our area but they do come through once in a while. Seeing a whole pod is unusual. I have had the chance to see them in the waters around Destin a few times and I had an up close look at one in Key West last year. They are a gentle and awesome creature.

I received some news about a couple of new additions to the Destin Commons expansion. The World of Beer will be opening a new place by the middle of summer. They will have a full kitchen and live music. Next door to the World of Beer will be a place called, The Blend. This will be a liquor bar serving all types of high end liquors. They plan to open about the same time. This will be a nice addition to the Destin scene.

Also this week I was able to confirm Lucy Buffett’s “Lulu’s” has actually started construction. It is going to be next to Legendary Marine at the base of the Mid-Bay bridge. I have been told the foundation is poured and the building will start to come out of the ground soon. Grand opening is planned for February 2015. It is going to be a big place from all accounts.

This will be a busy weekend. Thursday is fireworks on the harbor and the first Mattie Kelly concert. Friday the ECPHC meets at The Crust Pizzeria on the harbor for our monthly meeting. Coconut Radio will be the playing music. It will be a fun time. All weekend is the PCPHC’s Rendezvous on the beach in Panama City. We will be there Saturday to see all of our Trop Rock friends. Saturday is also Sunshine Cindy’s birthday. We will be celebrating all weekend!!!

Have a great weekend and I will see ya Monday with a full recap of the fun along the Emerald Coast!

    Slightly Stoopid Summer Sessions 2014

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Slightly Stoopid Summer Sessions 2014

It’s lining up to be another big season of live shows for one of Reggae-Rocks top headliners, Slightly Stoopid, as the group has finally announced all the details surrounding their Summer Sessions 2014 tour.

There are many traditions associated with summer and for the past seven years, performing at amphitheaters around the US has become a tradition for Slightly Stoopid and their fans. This summer, the San Diego based ensemble will bring their Summer Sessions 2014 tour to 25 cities nationwide. Helping them deliver ultimate jam sessions will be some of Stoopid’s friends, and favorite artists, adored acts that have been on various tours with the group in years past.

Performing for the entire Summer Sessions journey will be none other than 7-time Grammy winner Stephen “Ragga” Marley. Marley has been promoting his upcoming album, Revelation Part 2: The Fruit of Life, of which there’s no set release date. After his spring run, Marley is lined up for a set June 26 at the Electric Forest Festival before joining up with Stoopid in Eugene, Oregon to kicks things off on July 9th.

    slightlystoopidsummer2014

Also joining Slightly Stoopid on tour during select dates only will be D.I.Y. legends NOFX, hip-hop icons Cypress Hill, and Stoopid’s long-time musical conspirator’s G. Love Special Sauce. NOFX will play as direct support on just four California dates, including shows at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA and the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine. Cypress Hill will be added for just three dates, shows in Albuquerque, Phoenix and Santa Barbara. The Summer Sessions 2014 tour will round out its west coast dates with an annual hometown show at San Diego, CA’s Sleep Train Amphitheater on Saturday, July 26. From there, the band will head over to the East Coast, performing in Boston before playing the Gathering of the Vibes music festival in Bridgeport, CT. From there, the band will make their way down the coast to Philadelphia, Asbury Park, Baltimore, Raleigh, Atlanta and Boca Raton, among many other cities, before wrapping August 23.

Going into May, Slightly Stoopid plays a week of shows around the southeast before heading back to Florida to play Livenation’s Big Guva Music Festival, and then right to Texas for a spot at the Suburbia Music Festival.

Slighlty Stoopid’s schedule picks back up during the end of May, right in the heat of the music festival season. On Friday, May 23rd the group can be seen in Chillicothe, Illinois for a spot at the Summer Camp Music Festival. From there they head back west to take part in the Skunk Records 25th Anniversary set at the 5th annual California Roots music and arts festival. In June, Slightly Stoopid keeps the party rolling with performances at The X Games’ X Music Festival in Austin, the Houston Beerfest and the infamous Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival of Manchester Tennessee. After only a few weeks of rest, nine days into July, Slightly Stoopid will hit the pavement once again, traversing the US on their highly anticipated Summer Sessions 2014 tour.

General tickets are on sale now, and as a special incentive to loyal fans, for Summer Sessions 2014, the band is offering pre-Show VIP BBQ Meet n’ Greet packages as well as merchandise bundles!
