Ben & Jerry’s: Satisfy My Bowl

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Ben & Jerry’s: Satisfy My Bowl

Recently, the legendary American ice cream company, Ben Jerry’s, introduced a new variety named ‘Satisfy My Bowl.’ Filled with all sorts of goodness, it’s the new ice cream concoction you’ll want, but probably can’t have.

For decades, Ben Jerry’s has been mixing music and ice cream, working with musicians who share their values to create edible tribute pints as a way to help fund social projects. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Legend; the Greatest Hits of Bob Marley, Ben Jerry’s, in partnership with the 1Love Foundation, has created new, special-edition ice cream flavor in the spirit of the infamous album. A truly sweet way to honor the legend, aptly labeled ‘Satisfy my Bowl,’ the tasty tribute is described as “a blend of banana ice cream beats, a mashup of caramel and cookie swirls, and a chorus of chocolatey peace signs.”

satisfy-my-bowl-detail

For this release, the socially-conscious ice cream company wanted to: “pay tribute to a man who dedicated his life to bringing people together through music.” While busy in the kitchen developing the new flavor, Ben Jerry’s turn to their fans to name the new flavor in an online competition. In the end, Camilla Bishop’s name won, placing Camilla in the Ben Jerry’s flavour hall of fame! Also, Camilla’s name will appear on every tub and the lucky winner will also receive a year’s supply of Ben Jerry’s ice cream!

To make this project even sweeter, proceeds from this special-edition flavor will help fund the 1Love Foundation and Partners for Youth Empowerment to empower young people in Jamaica, continuing Bob Marley’s legacy of using music to change the world.

Here’s the bitter part, this flavor is not available for sale in the United States! This October, the new flavor is set to be launched in the UK at The Legend Session – An event where emerging British musicians will be invited to submit their original music for a chance to play their own unique versions of Bob Marley’s Legend tracks, live, on stage. So far, ‘Satisfy My Bowl’ will be available across the UK, the Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway.

However, music and ice cream fanatics are now able to help change the flavors limited distribution. Recently, a fan has begun an online petition, calling on the American-ice cream loving public to “Bring Ben Jerry’s ‘Satisfy My Bowl’ Bob Marley flavor to America!”

To help support this great effort head to iPetitions.com.

In Addition to the new flavor, Ben Jerry’s is also sponsoring a music video for the Bob Marley track “One Love.” Crowd-Sourced from Tongal, the leading platform for creative content development, this project not only celebrates the record’s anniversary, but also the spirit of togetherness that has been inspired by Marley’s music for the last half century. Originally released in 1977, when music videos had yet to enter mainstream culture, this “One Love” project offers international filmmakers a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a new visual identity for the track.

All-in-all, a total of $15,000 in prizes will be awarded with the winning video awarded a grand prize of $9,000 plus a year’s supply of Ben Jerry’s! Be sure to keep an eye out for the release of that video, coming soon

Typical Destin Weekend

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on Typical Destin Weekend

Sunshine Cindy and I had what you could say was a typical Destin fall weekend. It started out Thursday evening. We decided to head to Hogs Breath for a while. It was a beautiful evening sitting at the outside bar. Cam was working the bar and a bunch of locals were there. With most of the tourist gone the locals dominate the bar stools now. The big news around town Thursday was a huge gator that was caught and brought down to the docks to get weighed. The gator was 11 feet long and weighed 333 pounds. Our friend Jonelle was there when it was brought in. She came into Hogs and told of the excitement on the docks. It drew a crowd from seemingly nowhere to get a look at it.

We had a fun time at Hogs Breath talking to old friends and making new ones. We got to talking to Andy and his wife Nancy. He owns a heating/air and appliance repair company. Sunshine Cindy used to work for competitors of his in both areas so they had a lot to talk about. A little excitement was the police pulling over a car in the parking lot. With blue lights flashing and a couple more cop cars pulling up it tended to scare off business. LOL

Friday was a day to run errands before we headed to KC’s Sandbar in Ft. Walton Beach for a Parrot Head party. Jan and Kenny provided the music. A good crowd of folks were there as we had another perfect night. Mike and Bev, the owners of KC’s always put on a great party.

Saturday was supposed to be a laid back kind of day. We had no plans so we decided to go to the harbor and Harry T’s for brunch. Well Sunshine Cindy and I had brunch and then started an impromptu harbor crawl. We went to Crab Island Cantina, AJ’s, The Boathouse, Shark Shack, Fishheads and finally to the village for a songwriters showcase. We ran into friends every step of the way. We watched football on the new big outside TV at AJ’s. We talked to Matt as he was booking fishing charters. And we met a Nashville music executive who was helping with the songwriters show. She was one of the emcee’s. Pretty cool. We ended the night at Waffle House. We never expected a long day like that but that is what happens in Destin sometimes.

Sunday was a day to relax as it was drizzling most of the day. Julie, Loujean and Jan tried to get us to join them at Miller’s Ale House but Sunshine Cindy and I needed to chill after the past three days. I did order some pizza and wings from Landshark Pizza but that was the extent of our day.

We are only about four weeks till we have our special Phlocking Raffle Drawing. The drawing will be held during our “Crab Island Mambo Welcome to the Island Party” at Dante’s in Key West on Oct. 29th and you don’t have to be present to win.

You can win a prize package that includes a Canon 16 MP digital camera with 8x zoom and a 4 GB SD memory card. The prize package also includes a Nautica 19” Duffle Bag and a Coleman Tailgater package. The prize package is worth over $500. Here are the details. http://www.crabislandmambo.com/2015-Phlocking-of-the-Phaithful-raffle-page.html  Help us put on the Trop Rock Event “Phlocking of the Phaithful” by purchasing some raffle tickets!

Have a great week! See ya Thursday!!!

ThePier_LAS
The Shoot: “Easy” :
The idea for a collaboration song was posed by The Pier’s editor, Mike Patti, and Passafire and Ballyhoo! were kind enough to accommodate. We figured fans of both bands would love the idea, so we pursued it! The idea is simple: ask a couple of the genre’s strongest bands to play a recognizable song with acoustic instruments. “Easy” is the first collaboration song in the history of the Live Acoustic Series. The song was written by Lionel Richie and made famous by the Commodores in 1977.

The video was shot on location at Jackson’s in Denver, CO in early 2014. The Pier caught-up with Passafire and Ballyhoo! during their co-headlining “Winter Brewhaha” tour. The bands rolled into Jackson’s for the Sunday morning shoot (hence the song they chose), as we were setting-up lights, sound and the cameras.

As a small group of diehard fans looked on, Passafire played an original song, and then Ballyhoo! did the same – and yes, we will be premiering those videos as well! On “Easy,” Ballyhoo! front-man Howi Spangler took the lead on vocals, while Passafire’s Ted Bowne and Will Kubley provided harmonies, lead guitar and bass. Nick Kubley played drums, while Scott Vandrey played keys and Passafire’s Mike DeGuzman rocked the melodica.

A huge thank you goes out to Jacksons for providing the space and Cheba Hut for providing the food!

The Pier’s Live Acoustic Series Background
The creative force behind the Live Acoustic Series is Denver-based Director/Producer/ Video Editor and musician Tage (pronounced Taw-Guh) Plantell a long with producer The Pier’s veteran photo-journalist, Kit Chalberg

The vision of the Pier’s “Live Acoustic Series” is to provide reggae-rock fans with an intimate, stripped down acoustic experience featuring the genre’s most recognizable bands, along with some new faces. The concept is simple. First, get the genre’s best talent to play an acoustic version of a new or unreleased song. Second, create a production concept that is visually appealing and recognizable. Third, record the band’s performing the song. While the concept is simple, the execution is much more difficult. The Series required the coming together of a video director, crew, sound, venue, equipment, The Pier’s network, and, the bands—all with a common vision. Ultimately, this concept aims to produce quality music videos that are unmatched by any other outlet dedicated to covering reggae-rock. The series debuted on Nov. 12, 2012 with Cas Haley performing “Crazy Good Woman.” Since then the Series has featured some of rock-reggae’s premiere acts, including the Dirty Heads, The Green, Tarrus Riley and Iration.

On November 4th, 2014 – We will premiere another installment to The Pier’s Live Acoustic Series – Stay tuned!

The Bucket List,The Dry Tortugas! Fort Jefferson

Posted in Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on The Bucket List,The Dry Tortugas! Fort Jefferson

Bucket List

In English, there’s a slang expression which is “Kick The Bucket”. For those who read this blog where English is not your first language, to kick the bucket means to die. The origin dates way, way back, with the theory that if someone were to hang themselves, get up on a bucket with a rope around their neck, then they would kick the bucket away and that would be the end of things. Here’s Shakespeare in Henry IV Part II, 1597: “Swifter then he that gibbets on the Brewers Bucket.” “gibbets” is an Od English word meaning hang. However, it must be noted that in today’s use, “Kick the bucket” only means to die, it doesn’t mean suicide.

The “Bucket List” is derived from the aforementioned phrase. It’s widely viewed as a phrase that the movie “The Bucket List” may very well have coined itself in 2007 when it was made and today has become part of the English lexicon.

What the bucket list is, is a list of things one wants to do before they die. For many, death could very well be fifty years away, but they still have a bucket list. As for myself, I’ve never actually sat down and written the things I want to do before I go, but I do have them in my head.
One has always been to go to The Dry Tortugas!

The Dry Tortugas are a cluster of key islands, the furthest west of the Keys archipelago. Today it is a Florida State Park. They lie seventy miles (113km) west of Key West.  Discovered in 1513 by Ponce de Leon, he named them Las Tortugas. or translated into English, The Turtles, because of the abundance of turtles in and around the islands. Many years later the word “Dry” was added, as there is no fresh water on the islands. Today there are seven islets, which are actually an atol. In the past there have been as many as eleven at one time. However these islets have come and gone, then come back again over the centuries. It’s a common thing in the Keys actually. Shifting sands are always a common occurrence down here, be it in the Dry Tortugas, or Key West. The islands they come and they go.

My girlfriend Dani and I were up early and checked into the Yankee Freedom III catamaran around 7:15 am and before we knew it, we were off. The Yankee Freedom runs quite fast and the seventy mile trip to The Dry Tortugas was about 2  1/2 hours’

About nine miles out we passed Ballast Key, which is the southernmost point of the contiguas United States. It’s owned by a man named David Walkowski, a Key West resident, known for wise real estate investments and developments. He also has a house he built on Ballast Key, which is currently on the market for $15,000,000.00. Regretfully, I’m a few bucks short.

Ballast Key

The entire day was a bit overcast. Every now and then a few drops would blow by, but never warranted a rain coat or shelter. On the way there we passed other un-inhabited clusters of the Keys, including the Marquesas Keys, which I named in my song “Sailing”.

The main Island of the Dry Tortugas is named Garden Key and is the sight of Fort Jefferson, which began construction in 1846. This was about the same time that Fort Zachery Taylor (Fort Zach) and both East and West Martello towers were built in Key West, by the U.S. government. Consequently, their styles are quite similar. The biggest difference is size. Just a guess here, but you could most likely fit five or six Fort Zacks inside Fort Jefferson!

It turns out that Ft. Jefferson is the largest masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere! sixteen million bricks were used in the construction. It actually takes up virtually the entire island!

(picture from Wikipedia)

The fort was actually never completed, although it was put into service. Like Key West’s installations, it remained in Union hands during the American Civil War.
Dani rented gear and went snorkeling while I explored the fort further. She reported later that the snorkeling was fantastic! All kinds of fish and coral. I saw her from the top of the fort and snapped a few pictures of her with the zoom lens!

I love historic things and history itself. I recall going to the Collasium and the Forum in Rome, Italy and I was just astonished! While this was not the Coliseum or the Forum, it did strike that same chord in my for my love of history. I loved every minute of it and I highly recomend the trip for anyone visiting the Keys!

The day we went, the water was amazing! It had a silver look to it, quite unlike the water in Key West.

Most of the guns were sold for scrap in the early 1900’s, after they were obsolete. Several remain however. The biggest guns at the time could fire about three miles (5km).

Okay! So I achieved knocking one off of my bucket list! While I do have others to go on that fun list of things to do, one thing is for certain, I will return to the Dry Tortugas!

Again, I highly recommend the trip to the Dry Torguas! We took the Yankee Freedom III there and the entire crew were nothing short of first rate! You catch Yankee Freedom III at the beginning of Grinnell St. right at the dock.

You can also fly there via seaplane that leaves fron the airport in Key West.

For those who like camping, camping overnight is available also. Bear in mind two things here however. As it is a state park, alcohol of any kind is not permitted. Also, it is not called the Dry Tortugas for nothing, so be sure you bring enough drinking water with you for your stay!

Enjoy!

Thanks again for taking the time and interest in reading my blog!

Pandora Radio adds Cali Reggae Station

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Pandora Radio adds Cali Reggae Station

People love to use Pandora Internet Radio because listeners can easily set a station based on a song, artist, or genre. Recently, the popular music streaming site added a few new genre based stations, including one titled Cali Reggae Radio!

pandora

Over the past few decades, the way we listen to music has really changed. Today it seems as if more and more listeners have decided to forgo their physical collection, to rely on the convenience of several of the many online streaming services. Of these services, Pandora Internet Radio has attracted their fair share of the market. Catering to all types of music fans, the site aims to “play only music you’ll love.” Using the the Music Genome Project®, the system selects the next track by scanning their data base for songs with similar features to “the input of a single “seed” – a favorite artist, song, or genre.” Listeners are able to create up to 100 unique “stations,” and refine them as they listen.

Along with the search feature, Pandora has a list of genre stations, and as the site continues to grow, new genre stations have been added. Recently, presumably based on our listening history, we received a promotional email pleasantly headlined: “Ease into your week with our brand new Cali Reggae genre station.” This Cali Reggae station makes the 10th under the Reggae category, in addition to stations labeled Reggae, Dancehall, Contemporary Reggae, Reggae Rock, Ska, Dub, Classic Ska, Rocksteady and i-Pop.

After listing through Cali Reggae for a while, I noticed the station does not play a mix of artists, exclusively from California. However, the automatic selector does spin a nice mix of tracks that embodies the sound of the the Cali-Reggae and Reggae-Rock sound. The playlist consisted of big artists like Sligtly Stoopid, SOJA, Dirty Heads, Rebelution and Sublime as well as roots artists like Midnite or San Diego locals, One Drop. All songs from the more mellow end of the artists’ catalog of music.

Be sure to check it out for some smooth Reggae jams during the week!

Video: Dirty Heads – Silence

Dirty Heads released a brand new music video for the song “Silence” off their latest album Sound of Change. The video was first premiered with Yahoo! Music and was chosen as the next video due to the live response from fans while on tour. “‘Silence’ is probably my favorite song on the album,” say singer Jared Watson. “That song, to me, is just so big and nasty and dark and badass… The whole idea behind it is that the ‘silence is deafening.’ Silence is a very, very powerful thing.” The video was shot as a ‘Thank You’ to fans as we see the Dirty Heads kicking off their fall tour that will see them traveling North America before jumping the pond to Europe. The Pier’s Weekend Show Locator!

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on The Pier’s Weekend Show Locator!

Hopefully you can find just a few more days of sun in your area as the summer festival season comes to a close. Rebelution, Steel Pulse, Collie Buddz, Slightly Stoopid, and O.A.R. can be found at the various festivals over the next three days while Matisyahu, Stephen Marley, Easy Star Allstars, and J Boog hit up the local venues.
ReggaeRiseUpSet
It must be nice to live in Florida or Arizona… I know that’s hard to say sometimes after a long hot summer, but this weekend definitely justifies your suffering. The 6th installment of the Reggae Rise Up Music Festival comes to Tampa on Saturday and the inaugural Summer Ends Festival commences Friday in Tempe. The Pier will be in attendance at Raymond James Stadium, which expects to see upwards of 10,000 fans on Saturday for Reggae Rise Up featuring Rebelution, Steel Pulse, Collie Buddz, Ballyhoo!, and Zion I. Tempe Beach Park should see a large crowd as well for Summer Ends with a lineup stretching over all three days that includes The Replacements, Descendents, O.A.R., Katastro, and Fayuca. Along with two stacked lineups, festivities in Tampa and Tempe include local artists, brews, and cuisine.

Although the summer festival season is ending, the fall tours are cranking into full gear. Socal got hooked up this weekend and gets to choose between Unwritten Law playing an intimate hometown show or Authority Zero as they come through on the Rise to the Fall Tour in San Diego on Friday night. After spending one more minute at the beaches of San Diego, Authority Zero will be continuing their tour to Palm Desert on Saturday and then San Francisco on Sunday. All the while, fans will be hoping Jason Devore finds time for an acoustic set along the way.

The Pacific Northwest has a mellow weekend ahead with plenty of acoustic sets as Chuck Ragan comes through on his West Coast Tour in Portland on Saturday and Seattle on Sunday. Rocky Votolato will also be playing in Seattle this weekend on Friday and Saturday completing The Living Room Tour where a few lucky individuals get a serenade in the living room of a local residence. Whether you snagged one of the few sold out tickets to the Votolato Living Room Shows or are headed to see Ragan, you are in for a great night!

Remember to come by here every single Friday to see what shows are going on for the entire weekend. You may also view our built-in Show Locator, where you can search by artist view all of their upcoming shows, with options to purchase tickets for select shows!
