The Pier: Catching Up with New Kingston

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on The Pier: Catching Up with New Kingston

The three brothers from Brooklyn, NY have been touring non-stop following the release of their third album, Kingston City. We caught up with proud father and New Kingston bass player Courtney “Faddah P” Panton, Sr. in Portland, Oregon on the last leg of the America’s Most Wanted Tour with Common Kings for his first interview.

They have just released the music video for “Today” which was filmed entirely on Jamaica and can be viewed below.
NewKingston
Courtney Sr. worked long and late hours to support his boys when they were very young. He recollected, “One day I came home early for some reason and they were sitting out front” heads down with boredom. He took them into the house, put instruments in their hands, and that is where their musical journey started.

Faddah P served as a guide while Courtney Jr., Stephen, and Tahir practiced with various instruments. Having different tastes in music allowed them to bring something different to the table while they enhanced their skills.

[Related: Album Review – New Kingston – Kingston City]

“Their music comes from each of their individual experiences,” explained Faddah P. “They come from playing Top 40 stuff and there’s a lot of fusion in their experience.” He says a lot of their influence comes from the bands they have been fortunate to be on tour with such as Rebelution, Tribal Seeds, The Green, and Common Kings. “I would like to see more Jamaican bands doing that,” he continued, “The way they support each other.”

People who have brothers somewhat close in age might find it hard to believe that they can spend so much time together without bickering. Since different tastes in music can cause a clash in writing, Faddah P. tells them to sit back and think about what they have created. “If you don’t feel this way in three months, don’t put it down. They must be able to stand by what they say twenty years later.”

Easy Star Records co-owner and producer, Michael Goldwasser has seen the boy’s progression over the years from amateur musicians to nailing their three-part vocal harmonies. He had the pleasure of welcoming New Kingston to the Easy Star family and the band is looking forward to recording new material with producer extraordinaire, Michael G.

“They’re getting to the point where they understand what’s involved,” Courtney Sr. says with a proud smile on his face. “The group is really just them, I’m just the old guy. It’s a blessing.” Not many people get to spend that much time, let alone tour the world, with their sons.
New Kingston
In February of this year, they invested some of the band’s resources for a productive trip to Jamaica. “It was a wonderful experience. When we were down there we tried to do as much as we could.”

Upon their arrival, they met Morgan Heritage at Tuff Gong Studios. New Kingston performed the final event of the Reggae Wednesday series for Reggae Month called Reggae Run Whey at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Complex with Christopher Martin, Serena, Dalton Harris D’Major, and Dubtronic Kru. They hit up the club scene by performing at Redbones Blues Café in Kingston as well as an appearance on TVJ, “which is something everybody in Jamaica watches. It’s what everybody wakes up to… at some point everybody saw it.”

They took advantage of being in the home of reggae music by taping footage for the music video. New Kingston takes us through the streets of Kingston, giving us a glimpse of the scenes not often seen in the postcards. They conveniently missed their flight on the last day and were able to film important b-roll for the video. Surprisingly, that night was the first time they were actually able to make it to the beach.

Check out the latest video for “Today” and be sure to catch them on their current Kingston City Tour where they have shared the stage with Through The Roots, Kimie Miner, and Arise Roots. This is one family who is just getting started and it might be the last chance you see them intimately in a small venue before they start selling out amphitheaters.

Road Trip…

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on Road Trip…

One of the things about living in Destin is we are pretty close to some fun big cities. There are times we get a wild hair and decide to road trip. This weekend was one of those times. Friday afternoon Sunshine Cindy and I talked about Ray Fogg playing in New Orleans at the original Tropical Isle. Well one thing lead to another and we decided to head over to NOLA on Saturday for the day. We would get to listen to Ray and visit with our friends Pam and Earl, the owners of Tropical Isle.

By noon we were pulling into town and got checked into our room at the Provincial Hotel. We had a great time going to as many places as we could in a few hours. The city was very crowded with many Spring Breakers running around. Sunshine Cindy and I had a great time. Ray put on his usual fun adult humor show. We meet some cool people including one guy who lives in the quarter who just got back from Cuba. He showed us a bunch of pictures he took. That was cool. We capped the evening at Pam and Earl’s restaurant “Orleans Grapevine” where we had some dinner and a few last drinks.

We headed home Sunday stopping in Biloxi for a quick stop that turned into a longer stay when the drawbridge in Ocean Springs was stuck in the “up” position. We had to backtrack all the way back through Biloxi. It was a fun weekend but we were tired by the time we got home.

Sunshine Cindy and I stopped at the Rotten Apple this past week. We got to talk to Gigi. She is now running this place. We saw a bunch of other friends there too.

Spring Break is winding down. Destin has been pretty calm this year. All of the real craziness is happening in Panama City Beach. Sometimes you need to be careful what you wish for….Nuff said!

Okay, time for another week. See ya Monday!

Queens of the Islands Tour

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Queens of the Islands Tour

This summer, starting in June, two of reggae’s modern women artists with Etana and Anuhea will come together for their Queens of the Islands tour. With a scene dominated by all male bands and artists, it’s refreshing to see Anuhea of Hawaii and Etana of Jamaica embark on a island influenced journey.

The Queens of the Islands tour will be on the west coast, with dates as of this writing, from June 3rd to Jun 14th hitting CA, NV, WA, OR and AZ. More dates are expected to be added between now and June. There aren’t many all female reggae tours happening within the scene and we hope this is one that gains momentum for a national tour. If you’re not familiar, lets get to know each artist.

Shauna McKenzie, aka Etana, dropped her fourth studio album, I Rise on Oct. 28th, 2014 which later hit No. 1 on the US Reggae Billboard charts. Etana was born in Jamaica and moved to South Florida in the early 90s. After college, she joined an all-female vocal group called Gift. She chose not to conform to the music industry’s skimpy standards and moved back home to Kingston, to focus on producing music based on her Rastafarian spirituality and love of Jamaica. Back home she performed QUEENS_WEB-SQUAREbackground vocals for Richie Spice and Fifth Element and she wrote her first single “Wrong Address” while in studio with some of the band’s musicians. This single reached #1 on several Jamaican charts and was included in her first album The Strong One in 2008.

Rylee Anuheake’alaokalokelani Jenkins, aka Anuhea, is a self-taught guitarist and song-writer born on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Anuhea blends Pop, Reggae and RB with engaging conscious lyrics to create a style truly her own. Her debut album Anuhea released in April of 2009. It shot to #7 on the iTunes Pop Charts, #4 on RB, and #3 on the World/Reggae Billboard Charts and multiple singles became commercial successes on Hawaii and AAA national radio. Anuhea began showcasing her talents while boarding at Hawaii’s famous Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu. She’s released 2 studio albums, 2 live albums and has worked with, contributing guest vocals for the likes of SOJA, J Boog, Tarrus Riley, The Green and more.

Anuhea just released her version of “Sweet Thing” by Chaka Kahn for her Kickstarter backers, backing a new and upcoming new album expected to drop sometime this year. She has another new (and unreleased) song titled “Walk On Water” and both songs are expected to be performed live on the upcoming tour with Etana.

With a title like Queens of the Islands to market a tour, one had to wonder if a collaboration between the two island-queens was imminent. When I reached out to Anuhea, her agent, Ira Sweetwine informed The Pier: “Both managers and the artists are beginning discussions now about recording a track together and then releasing prior to the tour and of course performing together on stage. We hope the artists will collaborate even more once the tour hits – Definitely expect surprises!”

Ira, who’s an agent for both artists and president for Sweetwine Entertainment Group, came up with the tour idea and name and is now booking the shows. Ira elaborated more on her idea: “It dawned on me that offering a tour driven by 2 very strong, positive and talented women, both originating from different islands, would be a cross-cultural show not to miss. Not to mention both artists are quite involved in their communities and beyond with their works supporting children, humanitarian causes and so forth. I personally support the empowerment of women in the arts, the positive message of each of these artists and am really happy to see this tour come together and hopefully inspire all people they touch. Instead of simply saying Anuhea Etana, I decided to name the tour something catchy and to attract a wide variety of music fans, hence the name: ‘Queens Of The Islands Tour.’”

There you have it – Etana’s tour dates are listed below that include the June Queens of the Islands dates. Keep checking back as more dates will continue to be added.

Off the Grid – Illegal in the United States of America?

Posted in Fishing Reports, Key West News, Pirates | Comments Off on Off the Grid – Illegal in the United States of America?

offthegrid

Think you are still free to make choices in your life?  Do you think the government will allow you to live independent of their utility monopolies?  If you think so, try opting for renewable non-grid tied power and utilize environmentally friendly composting toilets and your own self-sufficient water supply.  Today, those life choices could land you in jail if you live in South Florida.  Take the case of Robin Speronis.

Robin Speronis has lived off the grid, independent of the city’s water and electric system.  A Florida court ruled this off-the-grid living illegal last week and has given Robin until March to connect her home to a municipal water line or face possible eviction.  Further, officials in the city of Cape Coral have justified this by deeming Robin’s home “unsanitary,” citing the International Property Maintenance Code.  First of all, since when did we begin to locally recognize “international codes?”  Where in the US Constitution does it provide for international jurisdiction over local codes?  Ironically, this “international” code mandates that homes be connected to an electricity grid and a running water source, even though most of the world lives without reliable electricity and municipal water and sewer.  Further, the code is outdated and obsolete because it was written without consideration to both old and new technologies that relegate the need for grid tied power and municipal water as unnecessary and expensive; especially, in locations where it simply isn’t feasible to have grid tied utilities. Nonetheless, Speronis’ home does in fact have power and water through far cheaper and more environmentally friendly means — solar panels and rainwater, but that reality is ignored by the local government.

All too often now it has become blatantly clear that our governments will stop at nothing to control every aspect of your life and demand by force of law that you are dependent upon the system.  Why dependent?  Simple, because dependent people can be controlled.  Nothing screams of totalitarism more than irrational government demands to conform to nonsensical and inefficient systems when better options that may suit an individual are available.  Today, living off the grid allows one to become in a large part independent of the government and as such, has now been targeted as criminal behavior.  Of course governments are not going to directly say this.  Instead, you see governments using the tact such as Cape Coral citing “sanitary” reasons even though they presented no conclusive evidence that Robin’s lifestyle presented any type of public health threat.  Sure, it was not the typical urban setup for a dwelling, but then, when was it demanded by law that everyone conformed to outdated modes of existence?  In fact, how is locally sourcing water from renewable sources and incinerating or biodegrading human waste “more” unsanitary than the city’s own activities?  Let’s be honest, providing filtered sewage mixed with a cocktail of harmful chemicals through debris and corrosion filled pipes as “clean” drinking water isn’t my idea of sanitary.  Further, pumping raw sewage into open bodies of water and burning millions of tons of fossil fuels isn’t exactly sanitary either.

When viewed in its entirety, it appears that the government is simply mad because someone found a way to do things better and without the need of their “services.”  Instead of adapting and reforming their code to catch up with technology, the uber bureaucrats with clearly limited mental faculties and stunted emotional development decided it was easier and or better to just prosecute Robin as a criminal.  How scary is it that in today’s society common sense, logic, and reason are excommunicated by bureaucrats in favor of mindless adherence to ineffective, dated, and or obsolete codes and regulations that were allegedly designed to help not hurt the public?  Instead of good judgment and rational logic, the go-to tools of bureaucrats are brutal police enforcement and prosecution of anyone that dares to try and live independent of their noxious edicts.  As you have witnessed and will witness going forward, this is a recipe for a national collapse.  No person, business, or state can function under such bureaucratic idiocy and harassment.  The freedom of people and the ability of businesses to operate productively are inversely proportional to the size of the bureaucracy.  The United States has hit the point where intrepid trend setters, inventors, pioneers, industrialists, and builders are no longer able to lead this nation forward, but instead, unaccomplished and dimwitted individuals with titles such as inspector, social worker, tax agent, appointee, consultant, and compliance officer are leading this nation into ruin.  I don’t know how much longer the US can continue the allusion of a functional nation, but as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, this system and nation will collapse under its own bureaucratic weight and feel good hubris.  I hope you are prepared.

Video: Morgan Heritage – “Perform And Done”

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Video: Morgan Heritage – “Perform And Done”

“Perform And Done” is the leading single off Morgan Hertiage’s new album Strictly Roots that drops on April 20th, 2015. The video was filmed on location at the weekly Mojito Mondays event in Kingston, Jamaica. It was directed by William Richards who managed to capture the essence of the song with a storyline reminiscent of the popular “Dancehall Queen” movie.
“Perform And Done is the music video that pushes the envelope for Morgan Heritage lyrically and visually,” the group states. “The goal is to captivate a whole new audience that would not typically watch a Morgan Heritage video. Our hope is that our existing and new fans appreciate our artistic expression… This song is just an introduction to the creative approach we took with this album. Krystia Rhodes and the entire Image Development Studios team wrote a hell of a treatment to highlight this creativity and the Director William Richards executed their vision perfectly.”
Enjoy the new song and video…

John Brown’s Body – “Worldwide Dub”
JBB
“Worldwide Dub” Background:
On April 16th, 2013, John Brown’s Body released Kings and Queens, a 12 track album via Easy Star Records that was met with very high praise. Now, almost 2 years to the date of it’s release, JBB will release Kings and Queens In Dub as the group has dub versions of every song from Kings And Queens, from a variety of producers from both inside the group out. The line-up of Dub Producers for Kings And Queens In Dub include Dubmatix, Dub Fader (of 10 Ft. Ganja Plant), Ticklah, Dennis Bovell (UK Dub Legend), Yesking (from the UK), Lord Echo (aka Mike Fabulous, guitarist of The Black Seeds), Michael Goldwasser (Easy Star All-Stars), former band member Nate ‘Silas’ Ricardson and Jay Spaker.

The overall project was mainly overseen by JBB’s hornsman Drew Sayers, working with Easy Star’s Eric Smith Lem Oppenheimer, with input from the rest of the band. Most of the tracks were dubbed over the past half year.

Here’s what Drew Sayers had to say about the new album: “The band has long wanted to do a project like this – reinterpret an entire album into dub versions. Kings And Queens seemed like a perfect fit musically, and we were fortunate enough to get some of the most legendary and inspiring producers in the game to be involved. I think this album encapsulates who we are as a group: our foundation is firmly rooted in the classics and we sought inspiration from albums like Gregory Isaac’s ‘Slum In Dub’ and Aswad’s “New Chapter of Dub”. But we never look in only one direction and I think what you will hear in this album is a devotion to originality and independence.”

Go grab “Worldwide Dub” for FREE, this week only, on the homepage of The Pier and pick up Kings and Queens In Dub on April 7th, 2015. You can pre-order the new album on iTunes by clicking HERE!

Jurassic 5’s Record Store Day Release

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Jurassic 5’s Record Store Day Release

If you’re a true music fan than you know that Record Store Day is a time where you get out of the house and head down to the Record Store and buy something tangible. Hip-Hop collective, Jurassic 5 will contribute to Record Store Day with a re-release of their album Quality Control on 4 LPs this April 18th, 2015.

Did I mention that the LP re-release will include Deluxe “Wood Box” packaging? The packaging is best described in their press release as “a quadruple vinyl release housed in an outer wood box laser-etched with the iconic “J5″ logo on the front.” Split up among the 4 LPs will be 2 vocal and 2 instrumental paired with an in-depth 24-page booklet that includes rare photos courtesy of photographer B+, liner notes by author Brian Coleman, and input from all six members of the group. It doesn’t end there as each vinyl will be housed in a European-style jacket with never-before-seen artwork.
J5_Vinyl
Available now is a two-song 7-inch, with “Quality Control” on side A and “Jurass Finish First” on side B. The 45 pressing is black vinyl, with a 7-inch sized artwork replication of the original “Quality Control” single jacket. You can pick this album up on Get On Down by clicking HERE!

Since 1998, Jurassic 5 has made their underground mark on the hip-hop scene with the release of their first EP, followed by their debut album in 2000 with Quality Control. Since then, the group would release 2 more albums until breaking up in 2007 following the release of Feedback.

In 2013, the group’s six original members, Akil, Zaakir, Marc 7, DJ Nu-Mark, Chali 2na, and Cut Chemist, reunited for Coachella, and then embarked on a yearlong string of sold-out concerts and festivals in Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Formed in 1994, the group kept momentum going into 2014 celebrating 20-Years with their Word of Mouth Reunion Tour that saw the group sharing the road and stage alongside Dialted Peoples, Beat Junkies and MC Supernatural.

J5’s Vocalist Chali 2na has collaborated on songs with Long Beach Dub All-stars, Slightly Stoopid with ties to the reggae-rock community using his vocals as a smooth bridge between reggae hip hop. While there are no current plans for a new album, J5’s renaissance continues with the release of a full-length documentary feature later this year. Below, you’ll find their announced tour dates for Australia, US, Japan and Europe.

Fans that attend any of the group’s tour dates prior to Record Store Day, April 18, will be able to pre-order an autographed VIP edition of the box set, which they will see a sample of on-site.

Spring is in the air and the festivals are starting to pick back up. This edition of The Pier’s Weekend Show Locator found plenty of reggae shows and festivals to keep you busy over the next three days including Bad Religion, Fortunate Youth, New Kingston, True Press, The Steppas, and many more.

Open House featuring Face to FaceIt’s officially spring and that means it’s time to head up the mountains for some late-season skiing and snowboarding before the snow is all gone. And if you need even more reason to hit the slopes, there are numerous shows to catch in the higher elevations as well.

Kicking off the weekend tonight is Iration as they close up the Bud Light HI-FI Concert Series at Snowmass Mountain. Iration then heads over to Telluride Ski Resort for the Mountain Town Get Down. Take the drive up the mountain on Saturday for a FREE show with Iration, The Expanders and Morning Fatty at the Heritage Plaza Mountain Village. Those that stay until Sunday can watch some under-dressed locals freeze in the Bikini Slalom and then fill up with the DJ and Luau at Gorrono Ranch.

The Empire OPEN HOUSE atop Mont Saint-Bruno takes place this Saturday in Quebec, Canada. This FREE event is presented by Monster Energy in collaboration with Volcom and supported by DVS Snowboarding, CAPiTA SNOWBOARDING, Union Binding Company, and Coal Headwear…these big name sponsors bring along a big name band with Face to Face performing after Punchline13 and DJ Vinyl Ritchie. In between the music, attendees will find jam contests, snowboarding demos, and free lift access!

But the big event this weekend is Bud Light Reggaefest at Mount Snow in West Dover, Vermont. The 3-day event features live performances Friday and Saturday night in the Snow Barn and outdoor parties in the Main Base Area Saturday and Sunday afternoons. This year’s lineup features Easy Star All-Stars playing Saturday night, with Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad and Inner Circle playing FREE shows during the afternoon parties on Saturday and Sunday. In addition to all the great reggae music, attendees can also grab a nice dinner at 1900 Burger for the Beer Pairing Dinner Series or catch the Sink or Skim annual Pond Skimming competition. But those brave enough will participate in Mount Snow’s signature event, The Duct Tape Derby. Competitors will race down the slope in custom-built crafts made from only cardboard, duct tape, zip ties, and paint for the titles of best slider, most creative, best kids only sled, and judges choice.

Remember to come by here every single Friday to see what shows are going on for the entire weekend. You may also view our built-in Show Locator, where you can search by artist view all of their upcoming shows, with options to purchase tickets for select shows!

Gov’t Mule’s ‘Dub Side of the Mule’

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Gov’t Mule’s ‘Dub Side of the Mule’

Guitar God, Warren Haynes inspires many with his ability to perform polished jams from any brand of Rock n’Roll, and an incomparable roster of legends he has collaborated alongside. Now his band Gov’t Mule has announced two new releases scheduled for April, including Dub Side Of The Mule, an archived set featuring Toots Hibbert!

After playing together for 20 years, the group of Veteran Rock musicians known as Gov’t Mule have never played the same show twice. With a deep catalog of originals and the ability to draw countless cuts from other band’s beloved repertoire, the Gov’t Mule experience can change night to night. Often times during shows musicians will sit-in on a couple tracks or the band may even play a themed set a with a special guest.

One experience of note was created back in 2006. For a New Years Eve show in New York City at the infamous Beacon Theatre, Gov’t Mule treated fans to a performance that featured three-plus hours of music. Played that night was several sets of Mule standards and covers, including a 1-hour reggae set featuring Toots Hibbert, the legendary founder of Toots The Maytals, as well as a finale with special appearances by Gregg Allman Friends and John Popper of Blues Traveler. As many are, the show was recorded and canned. But now, all 34 tracks have been remixed and mastered!

Following December’s release of Dark Side of the Mule, and the recent release of Sco-Mule, the group’s live collaboration with guitarist John Scofield and just preceding the release of Stoned Side of the Mule, a Gov’t Mule set of Rolling Stones covers, this next addition to the bands 20th anniversary archival series focuses on the the night’s unique pairing, spotlighting the band’s work with reggae, aptly titled Dub Side of the Mule.

Playing through the mid-night hour, Warren and Toots performed a total of 10 songs together. Included are many of Toots’ revered songs including “Pressure Drop,” “54-46 Was My Number,” “Reggae Got Soul,” and the Easy Star All-Stars’ arrangement of Radiohead’s “Let Down.” Gov’t Mule book-ends the set with reggae versions of 2 of their own tracks. The set opens with “I’m A Ram”, a track that was originally released as part of Gov’t Mules Mighty High, a 2007 album that features reggae and dub versions of Mule classics. Closing the set is a reggae rendition of Warrens adored, “Soulshine.”

Scheduled to release on April 7th via Warren Haynes’ Evil Teen Records Dub Side of the Mule will be available in three formats. A standard edition CD of the show’s entire second set with Toots – A standard edition vinyl made of two 180-gram vinyl’s of the Toots set with a download code for the digital files – and a deluxe edition including 3 CDs of the entire 3-hour performance, plus a DVD of only the entire reggae set with Toots. Available for pre-order until April 6, 2015 at 11:59PM EST, with the Purchase of any Dub Side of the Mule media item, fans can add a Dub Side printed change tray and/or rolling papers for only $5 and a Dub Side T-Shirt for just $15!
