The central coast of California will combine its surplus of scenery with its love for reggae music at the first ever Rootfire at the Beach. Taking place on August 2nd at Avila Beach Resort, the festival will feature five recognizable artists representing a broad range of reggae as well as an all day DJ set from Expanders Sound System.
“Dan Sheehan and Jeff Monser from Cali Roots had been promoting shows in Avila Beach and basically brought them all together to get behind Rootfire. With their partnerships and that venue, it was a pretty spiritual first step” Rootfire founder Seth Herman told The Pier.
While it is the inaugural year for Rootfire at the Beach, their lineup already suggests that attending will be a guaranteed good time. In addition to the music, Herman told us the location was also a top priority for this all-encompassing event.
“One thing that was really important for planning this event was to have a location that was really beautiful and to try and connect being healthy with the music. And we couldn’t have picked a better spot than Avila Beach.”
The landmark event is also presented by the California Roots team and Otter Productions. Their participation is a sure sign that this type of health-conscious, environmentally friendly gathering is on the rise. A part of the proceeds will be donated to local San Luis Obispo charity with the Rossi Foundation, benefiting a wide array of cash-strapped local programs.
Herman is hopeful that Rootfire will be able to follow up this event with more similarly themed communal activities in the future.
“Like a wedding, a lot of people are coming together because they already have relationships with each other. We are thinking of doing another concert at the beach, hopefully for two days. But we could also do Rootfire at the mountains, or the lake, or the desert. And all those different events could be like a wedding, where we bring different people together.”
Avila Beach is tucked right in between Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo, CA. The coastal spot regularly hosts quality concerts in the summer. California Roots and Otter Productions will bring the reggae scene back to Avila Beach for a September 27th concert that will feature Rebelution and Nahko and Medicine for the People.
The Line Up:

“I don’t know how it will all unfold. We are going to make the most of this year and learn from it” Herman said. “And after it takes place go back and see what we could do better and then look for other places in addition to Avila Beach where we can do more in the future.”
