No hurricane in Destin this week

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on No hurricane in Destin this week

It’s been ten years since the last hurricane hit Destin. We have more hurricane free days ahead of us too I am glad to say. Tropical Storm Erika fizzled out over Cuba. The last track had it coming right up Main Street in Destin but we all know how those things change. Anyway, RIP Erika…glad we didn’t get to know you!

Sunshine Cindy and I had another good week. Thursday I went to see the best chiropractor in Destin, Dr. Payne. I have been going to see him for years and I always leave feeling great. Thursday night Sunshine Cindy and I sat on our back porch listening to Trop Rock music and having a few beers. Life is good in Destin.

Friday Sunshine Cindy went to World of Beer with her Mom and Tiffany. While they were enjoying some lunch and beers, I headed out for some errands. Buy some booze at Beach Liquor, check. Get some groceries, check. Stop in at The Crust Pizzeria to see Charlie, uncheck. Charlie was not there but I still had a slice of pizza and a beer. Charlie is busy getting ready to open a new location in Mary Ester by the mall. Charlie has great pizza. I hope he does well.

When I left the Crust I stopped in at Landshark Pizza. I wanted to make sure everything was good to go for our football party on Saturday. Brian and Sue had everything under control. I hung around for a while having a couple PBR’s and then headed home.

Sunshine Cindy got home about the same time I did. We decided to head to our pool for the evening. We could have gone to a parrot head meeting in Niceville but we were comfortable and wanted to relax by the pool. We had a good time swimming and our parrot head friends all had a good time too. They were at Dockside then a bunch of them went to the Boathouse in Val-P. It ended up with about 15 or so people there. You never know where a party might break out around here!

Our Crab Island Mambo football party at Landshark was a blast. Sunshine Cindy and I got there about 12:30 and we didn’t leave till almost 9 pm. Jan and Kenny played music, we had a the football drawing, Brian had brats and butts on the smoker….it was a fun day that was capped by a big group sitting outside with the Browns game on the TV. Oh yeah, the Browns beat up Tampa Bay for the win.

Sunday was one of those days where you have an unexpected good time. I started the day with a morning bike ride. The beach was beautiful. So when I got home, Sunshine Cindy and I decided to head to Tailfins on the harbor for brunch. We were on the third floor with a great breeze. While there Tommy and his Dad, Capt. Browning came in. Capt. Browning has been a boat captain in Destin forever. He is one of the original’s.

Just as they came in, a couple of friends of Tommy also came in. It was Daniel de los Reyes and his lady. Daniel is the drummer for the Zac Brown Band. Tommy was helping them with reservations and such for their vacation. Daniel was a great guy. We all sat around and had a few beers for about an hour as Daniel asked questions about Destin and told stories from the road with the band and Capt. Browning told stories about life in Destin on the water. The hour seemed to go by in about 5 minutes. It was so much fun being a part of that. Like I said, you never know what to expect in Destin.

Daniel and his lady left to go on a helicopter ride. Tommy and Capt. Browning went down to the docks. Sunshine Cindy stayed back for a while. We were glad we did as our friend Larry came in. We chatted with him for a few minutes. Finally it was time to head home to put the weekend to bed!

Around town I noticed construction has started on the building at the corner of Restaurant Row and Hwy. 98. This is supposed to be some kind of extended stay hotel. The condo on the beach on Restaurant Row is starting to come out of the ground. This was one of the last open spaces on the beach. Oh well, progress I guess…

One more big weekend of tourist traffic coming up. Labor Day is the last big hurrah of summer. Then it’s time for football and cooler weather. Have a great week. See ya Monday!

Lagwagon’s Joey Cape: ‘Stitch Puppy’

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Lagwagon’s Joey Cape: ‘Stitch Puppy’

Lagwagon front man Joey Cape is set to release his first solo album in five years entitled Stitch Puppy on Sept. 4th. We haven’t had many opportunities to see what age looks like on punk rockers and Joey Cape is no spring chicken.

Closing in on 50-years-old, The Caper spent the last year touring the world supporting Lagwagon’s newest release, Hang. The album was pretty angry, as Joey told us when we last spoke.

There is sure to be some somber moments with Stitch Puppy but we will most certainly be lifted back up. The last few years have not been easy on Joey with the loss of close friends on his journey over the hill, but there is hope in Stitch Puppy, inspired by the “Victorian mourning doll” his daughter made him.

“Put it this way, if my house were to burn down, after my family and the animals, Stitch would be top priority.”

In the first video release, directed by Cape, he brings the doll to life “representing purity, loss, and the strength that follows.”

Joey Cape has always been a prolific songwriter in the punk-rock genre but it wasn’t until he released an acoustic split with the late No Use For A Name singer Tony Sly where we were fortunate to hear the stripped down and unplugged versions his punk rock classics.

[Related: Producer Spotlight: Ryan Greene]

Stitch Puppy will undoubtedly touch the hearts of fans, old and new alike. We have all experienced loss and the processes of picking up the pieces in order to align ourselves back with the path we were meant to be on.

“We are all disappointed by life’s disloyalties and losses but somehow we’re wiser for them,” says Cape. “We transform from victim to guide. We are witness to these things and the beauty in between. That’s it. That’s how I see ‘Stitch Puppy’. Not defeated. Simply the wise witness I aim to be.”

You can preview “This Life Is Strange” in a video directed by Joey Cape featuring stop motion from his talented daughter.

Review: Perro Bravo – 3 On The Tree

1.) 4 On The Floor
2.) Let’s Rock Again
3.) Haunted Panga
4.) Same Thing
5.) In Time
6.) Electric Remix (ft. Jamin from Thicker Than Thieves)
7.) As The Sun Sets In The West
8.) Born In 69
9.) Still Dont Care Too Much Dub
10.) They Get Along

The Pier Album Rating:

Release Date: July 7th, 2015
Record Label: Skunk Records
Official Website: Perro Bravo Website

Artist Background:
Perro Bravo is a band started by Michael “Miguel “Happoldt. Miguel began his musical adventure as a member of the group “Sublime”. He played with the group between 1991 and 1993 and produced and mixed the band’s first album “40. Oz. to Freedom “.?After signing with a major label the band recorded its break through record “Sublime“. Veterans of the stage and studio, Perro Bravo is more focused on grass roots approach to bringing music to the people and a d.i.y. ethic in the studio.

The sound is similar to Sublime and Slightly Stoopid but is also more guitars based. Current stage line up is Mike Long (Capitol Eye) on bass, and Greg “Mudd” Lowther (Falling Idols, Corn Doggy Dog, Gluefactory, etc.) on drums.

Album Review:
3 on the Tree is not what I was expecting by any stretch of the imagination given the history of this band with Sublime, the Falling Idols, Warchurch and many other Long Beach musical adventures. Simply put, this is a rock record, hitting on the Specials, Sublime and the Stooges along the way.

Their debut Smokin Scorpion Tales was a great album, but this release solidifies the Perro Bravo sound as a powerful, but melodic rock band. There are reggae influences, surf influences, ska influences, but once its all mixed up, as my friend Nick Bone would say… “It’s all Rock N Roll”.

The strength in this album for me comes across in the surf and rock tunes, flavors that have been missing for far too long from this scene.

“4 On The Floor”, is an upbeat steppers track with a wandering guitar and rolling bass line that introduces the album nicely with its theme of letting go and moving forward.

“Lets Rock Again”, takes an abrupt right turn into the land of the Ramones, and seems to scream at the idea of expectation and the burden of influence with a nice middle finger in the air. “Haunted Panga” is a mostly instrumental surf tune, appropriately soaked in reverb and drenched in a Spanish influence pulling in the romance this band seems to have with places south of the border.

“Same Thing” brings in the aforementioned Specials influence, firing quickly back into the rock track, “In time”. Enlisting the help from Jamin of Thicker Than Thieves, Electric Remix ads a little hip hop flavored vocals to the album. “As The Sun Sets In The West” is a mellower track which I feel is the strongest lyrically on the album calling out the bullshit of false preachers.

The first time I heard “Born in 69″ I instantly thought of the Stooges. This song is what rock n roll is all about; heavy guitar riffs, driving bass and pounding drums.

Many will recognize the sample at the beginning of “Still Don’t Care Too Much Dub” from Sublimes’s Robbin the hood. This is Perro Bravos take/continuation of that Sublime instrumental. The Fender Rhodes that dances over the top of this track almost gives the song a Doors feel.

Aptly named 3 On The Tree, a reference to an old school 3 speed transmission, Perro Bravo’s second album manages to sound original, relevant and familiar all at the same time. Sonically, the album is great, while avoiding the trap of overproduction that is so common in new releases while anchoring itself in simplicity and old fashion good playing and song writing. Long Beach has always seemed to have it’s own dialect and slang that is part working class, part beach town, and when put to lyrics there is something so authentic about it.

Miguel’s lyrics have a way of drawing on this dialect which bring an element of culture to his songs. Perro Bravo is a raw band that unapologetically lets it all hang out there while still remaining accessible to a wide audience. There is a lot to be said for a three piece band that can play so many styles so powerfully, let alone make those styles sound uniquely their own, and Perro Bravo is one of a few that can do it.

MP3 Leak of the Week: 9 Mile Roots

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on MP3 Leak of the Week: 9 Mile Roots

9 Mile Roots is this big 8 piece reggae-rock group out of the Baltimore/DC metro area that caught our attention with the release of their new single “Feel”. They agreed to allow us to give the MP3 away for the week if we agreed to include the music video for the song. So with the song up on the homepage for FREE, lets read more about the band and check out that video…

You can download 9 Mile Roots new single “Feel” for FREE on our home page under the MP3 Leak of the Week on the right hand column! This Download will only be available until Saturday, Sept. 5th, 2015.

9 Mile Roots – “Feel” – Download HERE
9 Mile Roots
“Feel” Background:

“Feel” was Produced by Kevin Johnston at Orca Sound Studio, Abingdon MD. Here’s what guitarist/vocalist Matt Huss had to say regarding the song:
“‘Feel’ was originally written as a push and pull between the main horn line and the opening guitar riff – that back and forth, the call and answer that they produce was the basis of a groove to expand upon. The song itself is about slowing life down and maximizing the bliss that surrounds you, enjoying what comes your way. ‘Just remember to feel it’ – Sometimes we find ourselves wound up so tight around material and wanting more, that we forget the things that really make us happy… So let’s all remember to slow it down, just be and Feel!”

9 Mile Roots describes their music as Suburban Roots Reggae, which paints the visual that this band is from the suburbs playing reggae music and not from the ghetto, streets or palm-tree laced islands where this music has its roots. “We may not be a vision of the typical dreadlocked reggae musician that would first come to mind – but reggae music has never been about what’s on the outside – music comes from the soul – and what drives us keeps us alive,” says bassist/vocalist Josh Behun.

With that, they have a new song “Feel” which is the groups 3rd single of the year, following last months release of “Premonition”. With the 3rd single comes the groups first music video which you can view below. The video for “Feel” was shot in Ocean City, MD much to the dismay of the local onlookers. Produced by Zach Myers and Everett Glovier the video stars semi-pro snowboarder and childhood friend of the band, Kevin Kobasa, stumbling throughout the boardwalk of Ocean City, Maryland, wreaking havoc on tourists and locals alike, presumably after a night of some heavy partying. Check the video and links below…

9 Mile Roots Background:
“Feel”
9 Mile Roots consists of members Jay Randell (lead vocals/trumpet), Dave Muse (drums), Josh Behun (bass), Matt Huss (guitar, vocals), Ryan McDonough (guitar), Matt Foote (baritone sax), Casey Masters (trumpet), and Gabe Andino (tenor sax/vocals), 9 Mile Roots bring an intense and rich sound to their live performances, which seethe with an ample of amount of rock energy while keeping the reggae-tinged groove consistent throughout their favorite songs like the upbeat and uptempo “Kabuki” and the crunchy and funky “Simplify”.

The eight-piece suburban reggae rock band based out of the Baltimore / DC metro is built behind a solid group of musicians pulling from diverse backgrounds, their music delivers creative tunes that have a strong reggae vibe with a bouncy hip-hop flow and a bit of a rock edge. Their full horn section compliments the typical rock band line-up; combining catchy melodies with strong riffs and a reggae- funk-overtone, consistently blending up well known aspects of the rock and reggae genres. After re-tooling the band, slightly over a year ago, adding and replacing a few members and shaking up the instrumentation a bit, we’ve been able to put together a great group of fresh new songs that we’re extremely proud of. We’ve been recording and releasing these songs in small chunks, as we work our way toward finishing up a full albums worth of new material. Feel is our third single release thus far from this new album, and we’re exciting to be premiering it with an accompanying video release as well.

Buffett hosts ‘Rock the Kasbah’ screening

Posted in Jimmy Buffett News | Comments Off on Buffett hosts ‘Rock the Kasbah’ screening

Jimmy Buffett and his wife Jane hosted the screening for the movie “Rock the Kasbah” on Friday August 28th in East Hampton NY. Pictured in the photo: Musician Bruce Springsteen, former U.S President Bill Clinton, musician Jimmy Buffett, screenwriter Barry Levinson, and actor Bill Murray.

Open Road Films’s new comedy “Rock the Kasbah,” starring Bill Murray, Kate Hudson and Bruce Willis, debuted at the United Artist Theater in East Hampton, N.Y. on Friday night for a special sneak preview. The screening — presented by the Peggy Siegel Company and hosted by famed singer Jimmy Buffett and his wife Jane — was a crowd pleaser. Guests raved about Murray’s funny yet heartfelt performance as a washed up rock manager.

But it was the post-screening after party at the Blue Parrot Bar Grill that drew the most buzz. A star-studded guest list that included Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and President Bill Clinton joined the film’s cast to celebrate the pic and enjoy a casual nightcap. All eyes were on Clinton. The 42nd president of the United States received the most attention and selfie requests from the partygoers. Even the musicians and actors seemed to be starstruck.

“It’s very exciting that the President is here,” Murray told Variety at the party. “It’s an honor to meet him and get to talk to him.”

Murray greeted Clinton with a firm handshake and shared a lighthearted conversation. The two posed for photos and then Willis and his wife Emma introduced themselves to the president. Clinton made his way to the Blue Parrot’s outdoor dinning area where McCartney, Springsteen and Buffett stood in a circle socializing amongst a crowd of partygoers. Clinton joined in on the conversation with the prolific musicians and briefly chatted. Meanwhile, Mellencamp was in a corner socializing with some friends and Bon Jovi worked the room, conversing with all the guests.

    Donavon Frankenreiter – The Heart
    Release Date: August 4th
    Donavon-Frankenreiter-The-Heart

Marking the start of the singer-songwriter’s second decade as a solo recording artist, Donavon Frankenreiter’s has released his new album, The Heart. Growing over time, not only as a musician, but also as a man. Donovan has raised a family while also nurturing two creative careers, one on stage, and one in the waves. He comments in a post on the record “I’m still lucky I’m able to make records and that we have a fan base and are able to tour. I started my own record label; it’s a way for me to make my own music the way I want to, on my own time, and to put it out my way. So many things have changed and I feel a little wiser than ten years ago. I learned a lot over the last decade, it went by really quick. It’s fun to have a new album done and to hit the road with a bunch of new songs, it rejuvenates you to do your thing.”

On top of all that, he’s still learning what makes him tick. And so, naturally, he named his album after his ticker. “All these songs are as close to me singing from the heart as I can,” says Frankenreiter. “It’s a complete record; the songs are intertwined. I had to call it ‘The Heart,’ that was the theme of the record.” Recorded in Wimberley, TX, at Blue Rock Studios the album contains 11 tracks via Liquid Tambourine Records. Heart is out and available everywhere digital music is sold.

Out August 7th via Fat Wreck Chords this latest Flatliners’ release contains 23 total tracks picked from the cutting room floor of the group’s previous projects.

Less of a snapshot and more a time-lapse of their career to date. As the band explains “Figuring out what songs should make a record and what songs shouldn’t has always been the most difficult part of the process, but to have this collection of songs today is something we’re extremely proud of. We hope you dig the potentially weirder vibes of Division of Spoils”

For me it’s not just about playing music that sounds nice. It’s not just for fun explains global front woman Nattali Rize. On August 18th, 2015, Music Unites released Reggae Around The World Vol. 5 via Fortunate Entertainment. This is the fifth compilation boasting 30 songs for $4.99 with all proceeds going to Music Unites, a non-profit organization helping children that have lost their music programs due to under funding.

Put together by bassist Jordan Rosenthal of Fortunate Youth, Easy Star Records, Fortunate Entertainment, and Three Cornerstone Management, the end result is a whole mixture of talent from 30 different artists from all over the world contributing to the education of music. Jordan explains, “The idea for this comp was sparked from what so many have done in the past; put out a music compilation and try to get it out to the world. The reason that many of my friends and I were able to find out about so many new bands when we were younger was because of all of the great compilations that were released in the 90’s and early 2000. So we would all like to give thanks to Epitaph, Fat, Drive Thru, Hell Cat, Asian Man, Moon Ska, and all of the other records labels that have helped us all find so much amazing music!”

Jordan adds, “Music is such a powerful tool of expression and we never want anyone to not be able to fully express themselves in a world that has almost seemed to lose its voice.”

The compilation will be available to fans for $4.99 since that is the lowest that iTunes would go in price. All profits from digital sales will be donated to MusicUnites.org.

Kala is a discussion of the concept of time. Hall’s philosophical take aims to dig deeper into the nature of this important subject. Iration – Hotting Up
    Release Date: August 28th
    Iration-hotting-up

Following the release of their first new single, “Reelin,” early this summer, to close out the season Iration will release their highly anticipated new record title Hottin Up. The follow-up to 2013’s Automatic this record is the group’s fourth studio release and the first LP with guitarist Micah Brown. As Brown explains “Hotting Up is the next step in the progression of our sound. It’s the most complete album we’ve ever made. The songs, performances, production and end result have never been better. It’s a beat-driven uptempo record, but still contains the signature drum bass, rocking guitars and catchy melodies/harmonies that distinguish our sound. Pop it in, turn it up and enjoy!

Recorded at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles, the space has a rich history of being where many big rock albums were recorded, so the band figured it was the perfect place to capture this more emphatic sound. Produced by acclaimed hip-hop producer King David The Future and engineered by Will Brierre these new nine tracks were mixed by Mark Needham, who’s most notably mixed and produced songs for artists such as The Killers, Fleetwood Mac, and Imagine Dragons. Other collaborators assisting in the recording process include the band’s touring member Micah Brown, who played guitar on all of the tracks and sang back-up vocals and Capital Cities trumpeter Spencer Ludwig, is featured on one song.

    Release Date: August 28th
    The-Frightnrs-

Get ready for an 80’s dancehall/roots revival with this killer release from Queens, NY’s new Rock Steady dons, The Frightnrs. This four-piece ensemble have taken the cooled out vintage vibes of Jamaican Rock Steady, combined it with the raw energy and vocal stylings of 80’s Rub A Dub and added a touch of punk rock spirit to create an entirely unique sound that redefines what a reggae band can sound like. The Frightnrs recently broke through with a soaring cover of Etta James“I’d Rather Go Blind” on NY’s renowned Daptone Records, and have now given us this great six track EP for Diplo’s Mad Decent. The Daptone connection should give you an idea of the genuine sound we’re dealing with here. This is the real deal vintage vibes, polished into a beautiful roughness by longtime NY producer Victor “Ticklah” Axelrod. As Diplo says, “close your eyes and get transported to Kingston Jamaica 1981.”

    LAW – Mild Lawtism EP
    Release Date: August 28th
    Mild-Lawtism
Earlier this year The Pier spoke with LAW’s drummer Nick Aguilar, who gave us a long awaited introduction to the up and coming Long Beach rockers “At the end of the day, I would just say that we’re a rock band,” says Aguilar. “We can be heavy, we can be soft, and we can be in-between. Whenever people ask what we are, I just say that we’re a fucking rock band because I really can’t put a genre name on it. I guess you could say punk rock, I guess some elements of ska and reggae, some hip-hop here and there with an alternative rock kind of edge to our songs. It’s all very confusing.”

Bands composed of recent high school grads, do not usually make it onto our radar but LAW is a unique case, particularly because it’s led by Jakob Nowell, the son of Sublime frontman Brad Nowell. Starting as a three-piece and now a quartet, LAW’s members include Jakob Nowell (Vocals/Guitar), Dakota Ethridge (Vocals/Bass), Aidan Palacios (Lead Guitar), and Nick Aguilar (Drums).

Finally comming to fruition after many years of writing and some tough days in the studio, titled Mild Lawtism LAW’s eight-song debut EP is set for release on Skunk Records/Long Beach Records on Friday August 28th.

Premiere: Cas Haley – More Music More Family

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Premiere: Cas Haley – More Music More Family

Welcome to the premiere of Cas Haley‘s new song “More Music More Family” which will be off his upcoming studio album of the same name. The song features a guest appearance by Mike Love with co-production coming courtesy of Tubby Love out of Kauai, Hawai’i.
    CasHaley
The Texas-based singer-songwriter endured an accident while skiing last year that sidelined his music career after his ability to sing had been compromised. While spending more than eight months doing physical therapy treatments to regain the use of his vocals, the concept for More Music More Family was brought to spirit as the new direction for his return to the studio and stage.

After spending more than a month at Steelgrass Farm in Kauai, Hawai’i recording with Tubby Love, Cas Haley’s new album More Music More Family is set to drop on November 6th, 2015 on Jimmy Buffet‘s Mailboat Records. The album is said to feature guest appearances by the Luminaries, New Reb, Trevor Hall and the aforementioned Mike Love.

In true Cas Haley fashion, fans can expect to hear gospel style soul, blues, reggae, pop and a good dose of Hawaiian tranquility with More Music More Family.

Listen to the premiere of his new song “More Music More Family”:

As of today, you can Pre-Order Cas Haley’s new album and when you do, you will receive an instant download of the song “More Music More Family”. You can pre-order your copy on iTunes by clicking HERE!

Here’s what Cas Haley had to say about his new song “More Music More Family”:
“I’m honored to have collaborated with Mike Love on this song. I’m a huge fan of his music and of his character and values. One of the first things that Mike and I connected on was being a ‘Family Man’, so asking him to be a part of “More Music More Family” just made sense.”

Cas continues to explain that, “This song is my truth. It’s a story about the merging of my two worlds – MUSIC FAMILY”.

Cas Haley will take his truth on the road this November from Nov 5th to Jan 26th. After having to cancel tours and events in 2014 to recover from his skiing accident, Cas Haley will tour across 28 cities inside 21 states over two and a half months on the road.

You can find the dates below in addition to more links to follow Cas Haley’s latest happenings. Cas Haley was also the first artist to be recorded for The Pier’s Live Acoustic Series when he debuted his song “Crazy Good Woman” which you can view below.
