Sorry to disappoint you bong rip behemoths out there, but this is not the World Cup of smoking weed. From November 12th-15th, Rastafari Rootzfest will host the first ever High Times 2015 Jamaican World Cannabis Cup in Negril, Jamaica.
Since 1988, High Times Magazine has held the Cannabis Cup, the world’s foremost marijuana trade show and gathering of ganja enthusiasts, in Amsterdam. However, the Jamaican Government recently amended its Dangerous Drug Act to recognize Rastafarian religious and sacramental rights to use ganja, and also decriminalized the possession of up to two ounces of marijuana for all adults, prompting organizers to host this year’s Cannabis Cup in Jamaica.
Rastafari Rootzfest is a comprehensive event that will celebrate Rastafari ideology, livity and culture after years of struggle to legalize the herb. The event will feature daily expositions and seminars exploring the Rastafari culture, weed competitions, an awards ceremony and nightly concerts from roots reggae artists supporting the cause such as: Luciano, Bushman, I Wayne, Tarrus Riley, Jah9, Jah Bouks, Mighty Diamonds, Fred Locks, Talking Dreads, Tosh 1, and Mutabaruka.
“Reggae deals with issues that affect humanity and we will use the music in an educational process for this event,” says Ras Iyah-V, organizer of the festival and president of the Westmoreland Hemp and Ganja Farmers Association. “The artists performing reflect Rastafari in their music and way of life; they sing about herb but also the struggle, equality and justice.”
This will be the first legal ganja event to take place in Jamaica. The event will be held from noon to midnight every day in Long Bay Beach Park, set along Negril’s popular Seven Mile Beach. Anybody under 18-years-old will not be permitted to enter and this restriction will be strictly enforced.
