Tulsa’s Margaritaville Casino-Hotel holds topping-off ceremony

In a topping-off ceremony, builders of tall buildings often choose a native tree to place at the top of a building to show respect for the land.

But with the Margaritaville Restaurant and Casino complex under construction at the site of the River Spirit Casino Resort, the choice of vegetation for Friday’s ceremony was clear — a tropical palm tree.

With Jimmy Buffett’s most famous song playing on speakers, construction workers hoisted the tree on a beam to the top of the hotel tower to mark the completion of the frame for the 27th and final floor of the new addition to the River Spirit Casino Resort.

The Margaritaville expansion is the biggest development the nation has undertaken in the area by far — $365 million for 1.2 million additional square feet, 483 hotel rooms that will be more than any other facility in the area, and 1,000 additional full-time jobs.

During the topping-out ceremony, officials announced that everything except the hotel tower will be finished Labor Day weekend.

John Cohlan, CEO of Margaritaville, called the local Margaritaville development one of the better-executed Margaritaville projects the company has seen, and the opening is likely to draw the special visitor Parrotheads have been hoping for.

“I think it’s safe to say he (Buffett) wouldn’t miss it,” he said.

The centerpiece of the casino-level addition will be a two-level Margaritaville restaurant, bar and retail outlet with a stage for live music, two outdoor decks overlooking the Arkansas River, a seaplane and a volcano that erupts lava into a giant blender.

Introducing Dre Island & His “M16″

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Introducing Dre Island & His “M16″

“M16”, the first single off of Dre Island‘s forthcoming debut album Project Now I Rise, is an emphatic introduction, loaded with crossover appeal. The track, which released late last year, has an ability to connect with fans of reggae, rap, and EDM.
Dre Island
Dre Island is the stage name of 27 year old Jamaican artist Andre Johnson. The Kingston native has a Damian Marley-esque vocal delivery, which he uses to sing and rap his powerful, uplifting lyrics.

Despite the fact that he has yet to release an official album or EP, Dre Island has stirred up a following from the YouTube videos of his songs “Rastafari Way” and “On Time”, as well as from touring with the fellow Jamaican reggae star, Chronixx.

Dre Island’s dedication to music began as a young child, when he learned to play piano and joined the church choir. He also spent much of his time growing up in a recording studio, which is where he says he developed his ability to construct beats and produce his tracks.

Dre Island is expected to drop Project Now I Rise in the early part of this year, but so far no release date has been set. Also, plans for a tour to showcase the new album have yet to surface. So, in the meantime, check out Dre’s collection of music on SoundCloud, or learn about his recording process for the aforementioned single “M16” in his mini YouTube documentary of the song.

Simpkin Project’s Upcoming VP Records Release

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Simpkin Project’s Upcoming VP Records Release

As mentioned inside our 2016 Most Anticipated Albums feature, and after signing with VP Records last summer, Southern California’s Simpkin Project expects to have a huge 2016 with the release of their fourth studio album.

Entitled Beam of Light, the new album will feature ten to eleven songs, along with a few remixes/dubs, a cover of a legendary soul tune and acoustic versions of some songs according to the band.
SimpkinProject
“We chose this title for a few reasons,” says the band. “First off, ‘Beam of Light’ has proven itself to be a fan favorite when we perform the song at our shows! It’s easy to sing along to, even if it’s your first time hearing the tune. The words are simple but the message has many levels. So why not honor our fans by calling our album that? Just hearing the words ‘beam of light’ creates an abundance of beautiful mental images that each person uniquely experiences. It reminds us that we are all connected by something bigger than ourselves and it’s this theme that can be heard and sensed throughout the album’s duration.”

The majority of the album was recorded at Keyboardist Shawn Taylor’s home in Huntington Beach, CA under Producers Rellee Hayden and Al Cruz of A-Team Music (New Kingston, Gyption), with the mixing being done in studios in LA, New York, and possibly Jamaica.

“This album catches the true essence and spirit of what the band is today,” says lead vocalist Phil Simpkin. “It’s classic Simpkin, but at the same time is something very new and fresh! As a band this is our most collaborative album to date; everybody writes, everybody contributes.”

The band didn’t say if there are any guest vocalists on the album, but did allude to their excitement over some guest musicians when they said, “On a couple of tunes we feature the legendary drum and bass combo from New Kingston. Their approach to roots reggae has been a nice addition to the sound of the album.”

The band is currently deep in the mixing process and expects to have the album ready for release by the summer, however they’ll be releasing a new single and video in the coming months.

Live: Tribal Seeds , The Skints & The Steppas (1-21-16)

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Live: Tribal Seeds , The Skints & The Steppas (1-21-16)

Date: Thursday, January 21st, 2016 @ 8:00pm
Line Up: Tribal Seeds, The Skints, The Steppas, and special guest Koa Lopes (of Inna Vision)
Venue: The Showbox Market. Downtown, Seattle, Washington

Live: Tribal Seeds 2016 Winter Reggae Land Tour @ The Showbox. 1-21-16

The Pier got hooked up for Tribal Seeds2016 Winter Reggae Land Tour just in time before the tour ends, thanks to their Manager (Rams) and the rest of the Tribe. The Socal fellas from San Diego has made their way north throughout California and stopped in Seattle Thursday night, the 21st, during the Pacific Northwest leg. Despite touring completely in the West this time around, Tribal Seeds made this tour an overseas affair by inviting special guests The Skints from London and The Steppas from Hawaii.

Tribal Seeds originated in San Diego by brothers Steven Rene Jacobo (lyrics, lead vocals, guitar) and Tony-Ray Jacobo (producer, keyboards, vocals) in 2008. The band has grown to six members since then including Carlos Verdugo (drums), Victor Navarro (bass), E.N Young (keyboards, vocals), and Ryan Gonzo (guitar, vocals). The boys brought their A-game to the great PNW for an entertaining show at The Showbox. After opening up with a fan favorite, “The Garden” from the album The Harvest, the set was heavy on songs from their latest album, Representin’, including “In Your Eyes”, “Fill It Up”, “Blood Clot”, “In Your Area”, “Herb Stock”, “Moonlight”, “Undercover Lover”, and “Rock The Night”. But more fan favorites were mixed in from old albums.

Also from The Harvest, Tribal Seeds performed “Vampire” and closed out their set and the night with “Love Psalm.” The excitement built throughout the set with the great stage presence and theatrics that the Tribal Seeds are known for. E.N bounced around the stage with dreads flying, Steve was chill and steady throughout, Victor laid down the groovy bass beats, and Carlos beat away with his usual high-energy performance that’s enjoyable to watch every time. All the while the stage filled and emptied with clouds throughout the set from the smoke machines and probably a little something else.

The crowd was plenty pumped up and ready by the time Tribal Seeds took the stage thanks to their special guests performing with Tribal Seeds during the entire tour. Opening up the night was The Steppas from Hawaii bringing their unique blend of roots, rock, ska, and lovers reggae. The Steppas played songs from various albums including “Garden”, “Niceness”, and “Hits” from their debut self-titled EP (aka The Good Roots album); “Empress Love” and fan favorite “Lost At Sea” from the 2013 EP The Love Shack as well as their first full-length album To You From We with “No Matter What They Say” to close it up. The guys even brought a friend with them from the islands, Koa Lopes of Inna Vision, to perform a few songs with the group. Even though The Steppas have completed full length tours across 22 states, they still have some trouble with the weather. When asked about what he thinks of the West Coast tour so far, Star Alaniz (vocals, guitar), had a quick 1-word response:

“COLD!”
– Star Alaniz, The Steppas (vocals, guitar)

But despite the cold, Star was found on stage wearing his sandals. The Skints, on the other hand, had the opposite response:

“We love the West Coast! … We are used to the wet weather, it doesn’t bother us.”
– Joshua Waters Rudge, The Skints (guitar, vocals)

IMG_1548 (1)The Skints came a very long way to join the Winter Reggae Land Tour, and Seattle and The Pier could not have been happier! Hailing from London, U.K., The Skints made their second trip to the U.S. to join Tribal Seeds and The Steppas. There is really only one word to describe the band’s performance: FUN! The very multi-talented band members took full advantage of their limited time in the U.S. with an unforgettable set. Marcia Richards (vocals, keys, and much more) took front-stage to serenade the Seattle audience with her soft, sweet voice while also playing keys, drum machine, flute, and melodica. Jaime Kyriakides (vocals, drums) kept the beat while singing lead and backup vocals on numerous songs, something I am still personally amazed with every time I see it. Meanwhile, Joshua Waters Rudge (guitar, vocals) danced around the stage with his guitar while Jonathan Doyle (bass) grooved out all night.

The Showbox Market is located in the middle of downtown just blocks away from the famous Pike’s Place Market. It was great to see the venue added a temporary barrier for The Pier and others with media access to get up close and personal with the bands in the photo pit without effecting the ample open floor space. The all-ages venue provides plenty of additional room in two raised bar areas with tables and standing room available without being blocked by the crowd on the open floor.

Even more important, The Showbox is VERY accessible with ramps into the venue and ADA reserved seating available at no additional cost. This makes The Showbox a personal favorite as it is one of the few venues in Seattle that I feel completely comfortable bringing my mother with me to shows. My mom LOVES reggae music, especially since I started working with The Pier, but she has trouble attending shows with me at many venues. Our experiences have varied across venues, but The Showbox is by far both of our favorites in terms of accessibility! The staff goes above and beyond with escorts for my mom to the reserved seating area with table service available. Even more surprising, or maybe not for those in the reggae community, concert attendees have always been very nice and helpful as well. Whether at the merch-booth, the bar, or trying to make her way to the bathroom, fans in the reggae community are always aware, kind, and more than helpful. I love the fact that I can go to a reggae show, especially as The Showbox, and feel completely comfortable setting my mom up at her seat and then getting busy going to work for the rest of the show, knowing full well that she’s going to enjoy the performance and be taken care of when I’m not available.

HIRIE’s ‘Wandering Soul’ Is Coming Soon

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on HIRIE’s ‘Wandering Soul’ Is Coming Soon

We last spoke with HIRIE in May while she was still in the writing process for her new album. Now after a successful Kickstarter campaign in which the band received over $44,000 from their fans, we got to catch up with HIRIE, who was eager to share some exciting news regarding her new album entitled Wandering Soul.Hirie

When asked why she chose that title, HIRIE said, “I felt very spiritual these past couple of years. I find myself searching for ‘what is,’ ‘what am I?’ and ‘Where do I belong?’ I felt like a gypsy and a constant traveler between cities, thoughts, religions, spiritual gains, falls, emotion turmoil, bliss, etc. It’s been a hectic and constant search for reality…I would say the album is for everyone who questions their lives and what it is they’re here for.”

As mentioned inside our 2016 Most Anticipated Albums feature, the record, which is expected to contain between ten and eleven songs, was recorded live at Los Angeles’ Seahorse Sound Studios and Rarefied Recording in North Park, San Diego under the guidance of Producers Danny Kalb (The Green, Beck) and Josh Cardinali (Natty Vibes, Marlon Asher).

When asked what will set this album apart from her previous release, HIRIE said, “I think the live element comes into play on this new album. The album is live sounding, so it’s got this real, organic vibe to it. It’s something that I’m really happy to bring forward as my sophomore album.”

In terms of guest appearances, HIRIE confirmed one guest appearance on the album and is anticipating two more. Fans eager to hear the album won’t have to wait much longer as she also confirmed that the album will be released sometime in March.

As you can see from the dates below, Hirie will be taking their show on the road up and down the California coast, with the exception of the Winter Rock Reggae festival by our friends at Reggae Rise Up in Utah, in addition to performing at Reggae On The Block in Florida.
