LuLu’s Kitchen: A Taste of the Gulf Coast Good Life

Posted in Jimmy Buffett News | Comments Off on LuLu’s Kitchen: A Taste of the Gulf Coast Good Life

Jimmy Buffett’s sister Lucy has a new edition of her cookbook out called “LuLu’s Kitchen: A Taste of the Gulf Coast Good Life: A Taste of the Gulf Coast Good Life” and it is now available at

Lucy Buffett grew up in Mobile, Ala. When she was 10, she started cooking in her grandma’s kitchen in Pascagoula, Miss. Now she owns an insanely popular restaurant called LuLu’s in Gulf Shores, Ala., where there’s often a two-hour wait with a line out the door.

Her new cookbook is titled, “LuLu’s Kitchen: A Taste of the Gulf Coast Good Life.”

So I asked, “What exactly is Gulf Coast cuisine? What do you people eat over there?”

Buffett laughed. “It’s fried seafood and gumbo, baby! It’s Southern, but it’s Coastal Southern.” she said. “It’s all about fried shrimp and fried fish and fritters and oysters. It’s the food of my family and my culture.”

Buffett only serves seafood from the Gulf of Mexico. No farm-raised shrimp from China here.

She’s Jimmy Buffett’s little sister. The “Margaritaville” legend gave her the nickname “LuLu” when they were kids. She spent years cooking in restaurants in New York and Los Angeles before moving back to sweet home Alabama and opening her first dive burger joint at age 46.

This book originally was published in 2007 with the title “Crazy Sista Cooking: Cuisine and Conversation.”

New Dirty Heads Album: Self-Titled

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on New Dirty Heads Album: Self-Titled

Dirty Heads continue to drop hints about their upcoming new album, but have yet to divulge the full details. Recently, vocalist Jared Watson fielded fan questions on a live Facebook QA session and leaked a bit of info about their upcoming album.

The QA discussion took place on Wednesday, 4/20, with Jared talking heavily about their last album, 2014’s Sound of Change, and the new upcoming album expected to be released sometime this summer 2016. Music to some fans ears may be the news that the new album will not continue on the same path as Sound of Change.

If you didn’t like the last album I think you’re REALLY going to like this album because we kinda got that out of our system.

Watson explained the reasoning for the experimental album and a creative departure from their core sound fans have come to love: “‘Sound of Change’ was definitely more experimental and we were ready for that. I think, just creatively, we had to do it; we didn’t want to just keep putting out the same album and we knew it would be different songs. We needed to take a departure from ourselves to kind of refill our creative gas tank.”

To reinforce this return, Jared even leaked some new information about the new album that was not previously known to fans, sharing that: “…This album is way more reggae and hip hop than the last album. That’s why, there is no title; this album is a self-titled ‘Dirty Heads’ album. We feel like that [title] made the most sense because we took a departure and got out what we needed to. Now we’re back in Dirty Heads world and this is a very core Dirty Heads album.”

Jared continued to talk about the new album, giving credit to the bands personal ups and downs that translated into some organic material for writing new music. Although no mention of an anticipated release date, we learned that there are about 11 songs from 5 different producers with new songs “Moon Tower” and “Realize It” being 2 of Watson’s favorites.

While Jared doesn’t name-drop the producers who helped produce the record, we know that Justin Gray produced “That’s All I Need,” which premiered on the World Famous KROQ at 4:20pm on 4/20/16. The Pier was previously told, with no surprise, that the group also worked in production with Rome Ramirez and Grammy award winning producer, Supa Dups.

“We have very uplifting songs,” Jared explains. “And we took a different approach this time. Instead of getting just one or two producers and writing with nobody or maybe a couple other people, we got with almost a different producer for each song, which you think would be scary, or it wouldn’t be cohesive, and it would be weird. But actually, everything fits very well.”

As with most fans, The Pier is anxiously awaiting more information as we can’t wait for the album to drop. We anticipate a new album dropping sometime this summer to coincide with their Summer tour alongside Sublime with Rome, Tribal Seeds and Bleeker that kicks off July 1st!

Stay tuned for more details…

Destin Staycation

Posted in Island Enthusiasts | Comments Off on Destin Staycation

I took last week off but we stayed home and played “tourist” in our own town. Sunshine Cindy had to work but she left early one day and took off Friday. It was a great week as the weather was perfect almost the entire time. This is longer blog than normal but enjoy!

On Monday I spent most of the day working on a special project at home. In the afternoon I headed to the beach and The Sandbar. There was not much going on but having a cold beer by the Gulf of Mexico was priceless. From there I went to Hogs Breath. Some local fishermen were in there telling stories about the one that got away. I got some lunch and picked up my new locals card as I had lost my last one. Then I was off to the Rotten Apple. Courtney was behind the bar. Tommy and a couple other folks were in there doing some day drinking. I went home from there but my week was off to a good start.

Tuesday was even better. I took Chaos to the dog park where she was able to run around like a mad dog. lol  I took her back home and I headed to the harbor. I stopped in at the boardwalk bar at Tailfins. I watched as Galati’s Yacht’s was putting into the water a huge cruiser. Next stop was Fishheads. Melissa was there behind her bar. There were a lot of people there. We had a chance to chat a little but she was mostly busy. I sat in the sun enjoying the warmth.

I continued down the harbor. I decided to stop at the outside bar at Jackacuda’s. I was the only one there. Adam the bartender was a nice guy who loved to talk. He used to work there when the place was The Crazy Lobster. We knew some of the same people. His main bartending job now is at Ruth’s Chris steak house. He even gave me the secret to parking there. That is also priceless. My last stop was at Crab Island Cantina. While there Brian (BT) Turner came up. He was getting ready to head to The Boathouse for his Tuesday show. I told him we would try to make it. And we did…Sunshine Cindy and I went there and had a blast. BT puts on a fun show and he had the crowd energized.

Now the week was really getting going. On Wednesday I stopped in at The Crust for lunch. I love their pasta dishes and at lunch they are a great deal. I could eat it every day!!!! In the late afternoon I went to Harry T’s to meet up with some friends. Judie and Kelly were there as was Robbin and Jeff from Milwaukee. It was a lot of fun seeing them and hanging with them. We did happy hour downstairs then went upstairs for the sunset. Dan the owner came by and when I told him about our out of town friends he offered them a cigar (it was cigar night) that Jeff accepted then Dan sent over a huge plate of pork skins. That was cool.

I went back down to the harbor on Thursday to enjoy more of our fantastic weather. I got a beer at Fishheads and watched the tourist walking by. From there I went back to Harry T’s. Red was bartending. I have known Red from her day’s at Anglers on the island. Dan was there talking to a customer, saw me and remarked how I could not stay away. Then he bought me a beer! While there I had a tourist sit next to me start to talk…and talk…and talk. He was a nice guy but he never shut up. LOL  Harry T’s has a great happy hour at the bar. It goes from 11 am to 7 pm with all drinks half priced and appetizer specials too. The bar is almost always packed for good reason.

After Harry T’s I stopped once again at the boardwalk bar at Tailfins. Cheryl was working inside but saw me and came to say hello. I also noticed they had a small band stage set-up with a banner for Ronnie Satterfield. Ronnie used to perform on the boardwalk at AJ’s for a couple summers. He is a good entertainer who moved to Nashville. He is back in Destin and I filed it away for future reference. Last stop before heading home was the Rotten Apple again. Tracy was working the bar. Tommy and several others were there again. I think we solved some of the world’s problems.

Thursday evening Sunshine Cindy and I decided to go to Landshark Pizza to listen to BT perform. This is a special trial BT and Landshark are trying to see if they can make it work. The week before it was crowded but not this Thursday. We were there for the entire show. There was 10 or so others who came and went. The problem was a big festival in Harborwalk Village that drew most of the people down there. But we had fun! The tequila was good too! LOL

Sunshine Cindy was off on Friday and we got a lot of things done around the house. In the late afternoon we had a Parrot Head meeting at LuLu’s. Our friends from Texas Jerry Diaz and Hanna’s Reef were playing for everyone and they were great as usual. We had a lot of fun.

The good times continued on Saturday. While Sunshine Cindy was preparing for a party we were having on Sunday I took off to get some stuff from Publix then I headed down old 98 for a top-down ride in the sun along the beach in Badass. Heading back I decided to stop in at TFI Fridays. It has been a long time since we were in there as the management ran the place into the ground. I heard they had new management so I wanted to give it another chance. It looked the same. I ordered a draft beer. It was stale. Enough said…probably another long time before we go back.

In the afternoon Sunshine Cindy and I took Chaos down to the harbor. Chaos loves going for a car ride and walking along the harbor. We stopped at Hooks for a beer. A couple local characters were there. Destin has some unique folks and you can see most of them on the harbor. They were good guys who loved Chaos. We then went to Crab Island Cantina. Jasmine and Josh were working the bar. We had four tourist ladies sit by us. They also fell in love with Chaos. We enjoyed the salt air and watching the boats come and go. The boardwalk was filled with tourist. I don’t know where they all came from. Boats lined The Pointe too. It looked like a Summer day down there.

When we left the Cantina we stopped at Tailfins and got a table. Cheryl waited on us so that was cool. There were other dogs there so Chaos had some friends to play with. We also got lucky as Ronnie was getting ready to play. So we stayed and had some dinner listening to Ronnie. Chaos also enjoyed herself. When we got Chaos home she was one tired puppy as she fell asleep in the car.

On Sunday we had an early birthday party for Sunshine Cindy with her parents. It was a nice relaxing day and a perfect end to my Staycation!

Around town Panini Pete’s opened. We will need to check it out sometime. Also Whole Foods opened in the Commons. A lot of people were excited about the opening. It will be interesting to see how they do.

This coming Saturday we have singer/songwriter Matt Hoggatt playing at Landshark Pizza from 4-7 pm. Matt was discovered by Jimmy Buffett and signed by his record label. He is a fun entertainer. There is no cover charge so come out for good music, food and drinks! We hope to see you there. A full report next Monday on the fun and chaos!

MAGIC! Announces Release of New Album

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on MAGIC! Announces Release of New Album

Canadian quartet MAGIC! have announced July 1st, 2016 as the release date for their sophomore album, Primary Colors. The new album follows the overwhelming success of their 2014 debut Don’t Kill The Magic. Working alongside Grammy Award-winning producer Adam Messinger, MAGIC! have compiled a collection of original songs written entirely by the band.

The reggae-pop band also recently released their latest single, “Lay You Down Easy” feat. Sean Paul. The light and airy song has already amassed a few million streams on Spotify and over a million views on Vevo. Critics, including USA Today and Idolator, are already predicting it will be a contender for 2016’s song of the summer.
MAGIC! exploded onto the music scene after their song “Rude” took on a life of its own during the summer of 2014. The viral hit topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 6 straight weeks, and went on to reach the #1 spot in 41 countries around the world. The undeniably catchy song has been streamed over 500 million times on Spotify and is closing in on 1 billion views on YouTube.

Now residing in Los Angeles, MAGIC! is made up of Mark Pellizzer (guitar), Alex Tanas (drums), Ben Spivak (bass) and the Grammy Award-winning songwriter/producer Nasri Atweh. The band effectively blends a number of genres, but their bread and butter is a fusion of soft, reggae-inspired rhythms and silky pop vocals. Frontman Nasri Atweh has an innate knack for writing catchy pop songs, and aside from his work with MAGIC!, he has written songs for the likes of pop and hip hop mega-stars Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Pitbull, and Christina Aguilera.

Fresh off their Brazilian tour, MAGIC! will play select dates this spring and summer, notably at the 142nd Kentucky Derby on April 30th, 2016. MAGIC! is looking to put the achievements garnered from their breakout single and debut album off to the side, and prove through their new album, Primary Colors, that they have more tricks up their sleeves. Head over to the band’s official website for a complete list of their scheduled shows, and click HERE to purchase the new single “Lay You Down Easy.”

Savannah reveals her favorite bohemian escapes

Posted in Jimmy Buffett News | Comments Off on Savannah reveals her favorite bohemian escapes

From the New York Post: “Jimmy Buffett’s daughter is a total Miami boho babe

Savannah Buffett grew up hopscotching between New York, Nashville, Aspen, Malibu and St. Barts.

But the daughter of singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett finally laid down roots in palm-fringed Miami, where 10 years ago she bought a charming canal-front bungalow in emerging MiMo, a historic corridor on Biscayne Boulevard.

The once-dilapidated neighborhood, named for its post-World War II Miami Modernist architecture, has undergone a remarkable renaissance in recent years. As an investor in the district’s happening new bar the Anderson, Buffett is part of that revival.

“To see the change has been incredible,” says the 36-year-old creative consultant, DJ and radio personality, who lives with her boyfriend. She gives Alexa the lowdown on her favorite MiMo hot spots.

New York Times article on the Margaritaville Empire

Posted in Jimmy Buffett News | Comments Off on New York Times article on the Margaritaville Empire

The New York Times has an article “Jimmy Buffett’s ‘Margaritaville’ Is a State of Mind, and an Empire” (photo: Jimmy Buffett with the Margaritaville resort chief executive John Cohlan in Hollywood, Fla)

His newest showstopper, a 17-story hotel near Miami, has three pools, a full-service spa and eight restaurants, including a seriously upscale steakhouse. That electric blue sculpture in the lobby? You’d swear it was by Jeff Koons.

Forget the ville. This is a Margarita World. “People are always shocked when they find out how big we’ve gotten,” Mr. Buffett said recently over lunch, grinning and splashing Tabasco on a modified Cobb salad. “We just kept quietly doing our thing. Not saying much. And now — bam! — here we are.”

Margaritaville, with its themed restaurants (erupting volcanoes, boat-shaped booths), started as a tropical cousin to T.G.I. Friday’s. Through trial and error, Mr. Buffett and a partner, John Cohlan, have since expanded Margaritaville Holdings to include four booming divisions: lodging, alcohol, licensing and media. Now, as they pursue growth for the first time overseas, where Mr. Buffett has a much softer fan base, they are trying to recast Margaritaville as a broad, aspirational brand — the Ralph Lauren of leisurely escape, if you will.

The goal is a fully formed ecosystem. Last year, an estimated 15 million people ate at one of Mr. Buffett’s 67 restaurants or stayed at one of his seven hotels and time-share resorts.

Margaritaville’s signature restaurant chain is expanding quickly — it will soon push into California for the first time, opening at Universal Studios Hollywood — but a spinoff series of restaurants in the Midwest called Cheeseburger in Paradise has struggled. Margaritaville sold its Cheeseburger stake in 2005 and, since then, roughly half the locations have closed as the brand was lobbed between owners.

311’s Grassroots Uplifter Vape-Pen

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on 311’s Grassroots Uplifter Vape-Pen

What’s next for a multi-platinum rock band who’s released 11 studio albums, a live album, a greatest hits album and three DVD’s, in addition to celebrating 25 years as a band with the launch of their own Amber Ale craft beer? Well, 311 just announced their own custom Vape-Pen called the Grassroots Uplifter as guitarist/vocalist Nick Hexum stops by The Pier to answer some questions…

It’s no secret that 311 prides themselves as cannabis connoisseurs and after two years of extensive research and development, they’re ready to release their now highly anticipated disposable vape-pen that was named using the combine album titles of 311’s Grassroots (1994) and Uplifter (2009).
The sleek, state-of-the-art stainless steel pen -– designed in-house by 311 -– requires no recharging, no refilling and is easy, discreet and convenient to use. Just pull it out and hit it. No cartridges, USB chargers or anything else needed.

Nick Hexum explains: “I have been interested in this product for some time now, but was not satisfied with what others were offering. We’ve gone through two years of prototypes and redesigns, tested it at home and on the road, and finally arrived with our own, no-compromise product that meets our high standards.”

Custom designed from scratch, the Uplifter™ is a unique, beautiful and state-of-the-art disposable that can be combined with any number of e-liquids, e-juices and oils for a premium vaping experience.

With all of that said, we still had a few questions regarding the vape-pen and Nick Hexum was kind of enough to take some time out to address these questions…

Discussing The Uplifter™ with Nick Hexum

As of June 2015, Marijuana is legal in 23 states and Washington D.C. — Will this product be available in all 23 states and our nations capitol? Where specifically might fans be able to pick the Uplifter™?
We are adding distribution channels every week. It is currently available in Los Angeles and next week it will be in stores in Colorado. Many more states to come. Local CO2 oil producers who are interested in filling and legally distributing our Uplifters can contact us through the web site at

When I read that the vape-pens don’t require any recharging, cartridges or refilling, my first thought based on that description is that it lasts forever with a built-in lifetime supply of cannabis — How does this exactly operate without having to be recharged or refilled?
Yes, we were able to overcome the physics law of conservation of energy. But we didn’t want to brag. Just kidding! The description just means that all you have to do is open the package and puff away. Many of our competitors require charging batteries and changing cartridges. With ours, you get around 100 hits right out of the box and then you can throw it away or return it to the dispensary for recycling if you like.

Many people will probably just toss them after the 100 hits are taken and the oil is gone. The nice thing about this is that you can just take it to a party and pass it around and it’s not a huge investment if you don’t see it again. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price on a filled one is $50. When you consider that it comes with one half gram of the finest CO2 oil around it’s fairly cheap. Each toke is potent enough to give you a good high that’s like 50 cents a high. Additionally, we are working on a second product release that is an improvement on the more commonly available cartridge style. With that one, you can recharge the battery and either buy a new full cartridge or refill the cartridge with your own oil. Stay tuned for details!

Will the Uplifter work just the same for those that aren’t into cannabis, but enjoy vaping tobacco?
Yes, it does work with e-juice. However, you have touched on a third product coming from Uplifter Innovations that is specifically designed for nicotine based e-juices.

When will this product officially be available? Is there a concrete date fans can walk into any store offering this and take one home?
Currently in LA on Next week in Boulder, Denver, and Aspen. Details coming soon. We sold quite a few of them at the Cannabis Cup in San Bernardino which was hosted by me and (311 bassist) P-Nut. The support from 311 fans was fantastic!

Thanks so much Nick for taking the time to dish on the Grassroots Uplifter — We plan to obtain one of these Vape-Pens to provide an unbiased product review. Stay tuned for more updates as the Uplifter Vape-Pen evolves and becomes more available.
