Video: The Hip Abduction – Higher

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Video: The Hip Abduction – Higher

The Hip Abduction has released a new music video for the song “Higher” from the March 11th release of their sophomore record, Gold Under The Glow. The video follows a woman from the inter-city living, presumably taking the subway to work, while escaping to a an island paradise of serenity. The video captures some beautiful landscapes and “[There were] no phones, no showers, no air conditioners, no grocery stores, no way to escape the gnarly seas that rocked us in the middle of night,” recalls frontman David New about the filming of “Higher”. “We stayed on an old school 39 foot monohull for 10 days and explored the surrounding islands. At one point, we went 4 days without seeing another soul. It felt so good to get some down time and reconnect with what matters most in this life… friends and family. Getting off the grid and living off the land again felt absolutely refreshing, and in a way, a bit surreal. I’d dreamed of this place, but had never actually been before.” You can pick up their new album on iTunes by clicking HERE! Enjoy the song and video…

Buffett on the Today Show!

Posted in Jimmy Buffett News | Comments Off on Buffett on the Today Show!

Buffett’s fans, better known as Parrotheads, didn’t let a little wet weather deter them when it came to seeing the “Margaritaville” singer live Friday. Wherever he goes, the feeling of sun, fun and island life are never far behind.

The singer and his Coral Reefer Band are hitting the road for their “I Don’t Know” tour, and they won’t stop until the season is over.

And after that, Buffett’s still not slowing down. The 69-year-old has a holiday album in the works to be released later this year, and next year, his music is headed to a different sort of stage. The musical “Escape to Margaritaville” will debut at California’s La Jolla Playhouse in May 2017.

Jovi Rockwell

Jovi Rockwell Background:

Jovi Rockwell’s been called too original her whole career. From her early days on Jamaica’s dancehall circuit to her recent single with Major Lazer — yes, “Too Original” — she’s always marched to her own beat. Those who prefer music served in a box might not always get it, but her mixture of Caribbean swagger and California cool has earned her a cult following and the admiration of collaborators including Shaggy, Major Lazer, Buju Banton, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Snoop, Mr. Vegas and DJ Quik. Currently, Jovi Rockwell is climbing the charts as the featured artist on the new hit single from Shaggy, “I Got You.”

Born into a musical family in the capital city of reggae, Kingston, Jamaica, Jovi got her start writing lyrics for fun in grade school and even joined a rap group. She soon became an active presence on Kingston’s dancehall scene, recording backup vocals for Beenie Man, freestyling on mixtapes from Sean Paul’s Dutty Cup crew, and cutting her own tracks with top Jamaican producers Dave Kelly and Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett.

Developing her “Rebel Love Goddess” personality — a bad gal reggae artist with a rock-and-roll outlook — Jovi carved out her own lane with the boundary-defying “Rizzla,” and connected with dancehall star Mr. Vegas for “You’re Gonna Need Me” and “Can’t Stop Now,” throwbacks to Jamaica’s rocksteady era that highlighted her range as a vocalist. “Can’t Stop Now” was also featured on Major Lazer’s debut album, Guns Don’t Kill People, Lazers Do, the first of several collaborations with Diplo. They connected again on “La La La,” a track originally made by Jovi and later re-recorded by Snoop Lion as the first single from his reggae project, Reincarnated.

For her latest act, Jovi’s become a full-fledged musician. Adding guitar, bass and piano to her repertoire, she’s formed her own band, and started arranging her own songs. Now, she’s set to finally drop her first official project as an artist, featuring production from Jamaica’s Natural High, Reo from the Soundkillers, Prince Fatty, and Jovi herself. Her musical transformation complete, she’s taking her show on the road. Expect to see her in a town near you.

Sun-Dried Vibes Hosts ‘Irie Vibes Music Festival’

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Sun-Dried Vibes Hosts ‘Irie Vibes Music Festival’

A collection of reggae’s fastest-rising talent will join up at the Chatooga River Resort Campground in Long Creek, SC on August 19-21, 2016 for the 4th annual Irie Vibes Music Festival. The 3-day grassroots music festival, founded by the members of Sun-Dried Vibes, continues to achieve it’s goal of gathering the best Southeastern and East Coast reggae acts.

This year’s festival features headlining performances by South Carolina’s own TreeHouse!, Fear Nuttin Band out of Massachusetts, Nashville’s Roots of a Rebellion, Tropidelic, Tatanka, Of Good Nature, Oogee Wawa, and of course Sun-Dried Vibes. Irie Vibes Music Festival Irie Vibes Festivalincludes a total of 33 bands across 2 different stages. The music-filled weekend will close out with a bang, as members from a number of the scheduled bands take to the main stage for an “Irie Vibes All-Star Jam.”

Irie Vibes is the ideal festival for catching some East Coast favorites, as well as discovering the scenes most promising up-and-comers. “I had this idea of having a music festival that handpicked the best bands playing reggae music, predominantly in the Southeast, as well as the whole East Coast. Ones that many people probably haven’t heard of…yet,” explains Zach Fowler, singer and guitarist of Sun-Dried Vibes. Fowler plans to jump on stage with as many of the bands on the bill as possible. “The lineup is unreal. Don’t sleep on acts like THE Dubber (my personal mentor and Godfather to Sun-Dried Vibes), Floralorix, Higher Education, PMA, Jo’Shua Odine and Bubba Love.”

Located within the Sumter National Forest, just minutes from South Carolina’s northwest border with Georgia, the Chatooga River Resort Campground is right in the backyard of a number of communities. It’s an easy trip from South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee, and well worth the drive for reggae fans from farther states. Irie Vibes is a kid-friendly festival, and includes a special Kid Zone with interactive activities. The Irie Vibes crew is encouraging attendees to bring their tents and hammocks, and RV Camping availability can be found on the resort’s site. Live arts, fire performers, arts crafts vendors, and food trucks will all be on hand as well.

Zach Fowler also shared with us that he will perform a sunrise solo acoustic set on Saturday morning between 5:30-6:30 a.m.

Tickets can be purchased directly through the Irie Vibes Music Festival website posted below, but you’ll have to act fast because their is already a low ticket warning. If you’re interested in finding out more information about the festival and all the amazing bands performing, be sure to check out the links posted below…

Posted in Trop Rock Happenings | Comments Off on STORY BEHIND THE SONG

This song was written in preparation for my last album, “Shanghai’d and Marooned In Key West (things could be worse)”. It’s one of those pieces that “ends up on the cutting room floor”, so to speak.

It needs to be stated that this song is not autobiographical! As it’s sung in the first person, it sounds as though it is. That fact actually played into part of the reason I cut it out. The other reasons were that I hadn’t actually given much thought to the instrumentation.

The level of production is something that varies from artist to artist. Some will send a producer an acoustic demo to a producer and they will do the arrangement, organize the musicians, record everything, have the artist do the vocal, then send them the completed piece. In many cases the artist really doesn’t have hardly any input. That works well for many. It doesn’t work at all for me however.

If it’s my work, I’m involved 100% . I will get most of the musicians. The arrangements are virtually all of mine. I’ll be there during the recording, making decisions on how/what the other musicians play, so on and so forth.

With this song, as I say, it never really made it past the writing/arrangement stage. This album would be my first foray into the Trop Rock genre and as you’ll see from the lyrics below, it paints a pretty good picture!

The inspiration for the song was several people I either knew as friends, was acquainted with, or just saw here in Key West.

As I say, the song was written in the first person and it depicts, quite humorously, a complete Key West blow out’s trials and tribulations. I had a lot of fun and laughs writing it!

Margaritaville may open in New York City

Posted in Jimmy Buffett News | Comments Off on Margaritaville may open in New York City

From the Commercial Observer: “With Margaritaville Deal Nearly Sealed, $295M Brill Building Investment Closes”

Jimmy Buffett’s hospitality brand Margaritaville is negotiating a deal for its first New York City location at the Brill. A source with intimate knowledge of the situation previously told CO that Margaritaville’s 25,000-square-foot space will span part of the ground floor, the lower level and the 11th-floor rooftop. In addition to his tropical-themed restaurant Margaritaville and a store, on the rooftop, Buffett will have a Landshark Bar Grill, the source said, serving a quick bite and drinks in a more casual setting.

The Brill Building is located at 1619 Broadway between West 49th and West 50th Streets.
