From the Key West Citizen: “City, Buffett in talks to play amphitheater”
The first national act to perform at the amphitheater at Truman Waterfront Park could be a familiar face, as city officials are in talks with Jimmy Buffett to perform early next year.
“They’re interested in doing a concert in Key West and we’re in discussions with them,” Mayor Craig Cates said. “The promotion company is trying to figure out dates.”
The “Margaritaville” singer plays his former Key West home every few years and wrote a letter in support of the amphitheater when the project was in its formative stages.
The amphitheater’s draft business plan calls for three major events in the opening year.
The city has a plan to hire a commission-based event manager that is moving forward, with contract requests going out within the next month, Cates said.
“There’s a vocal minority that is against the amphitheater but the vast majority is in full support of it,” he said.
A Buffett concert will go a long way toward justifying the $4 million project, Cates said.
“It would put the amphitheater on the map right off the bat,” he said. “I think it’s going to be hugely successful.”
