What do you do with a wedding ring after divorce? TODAY anchors say…
A woman’s Facebook post asking what she should do with an old wedding ring has the TODAY anchors and Jimmy Buffett talking. “Hock it,” Buffett says firmly of an old wedding ring, but Savannah Guthrie advises: “Stuff it in a drawer with your feelings.” More on this story here.

Targeting Yellowtail Snapper In The Keys Region With Capt. Randy Towe

Posted in Fishing Reports | Comments Off on Targeting Yellowtail Snapper In The Keys Region With Capt. Randy Towe

The nice thing about the Florida Keys is the amount of reef structure we have. The rest of the ocean is barren sand bottom, and the fish don’t like to congregate around that because they’re vulnerable to predation, but anywhere you have structure where they can hide, there’s going to be a lot of fish, from baitfish to snapper and grouper to ocean pelagics.

In most of the Keys, there’s a very good bite for yellowtail snapper on the edge of the reef in 50 to 70 feet of water. That bite is consistent all year, but the best fishing is from June through September, when the seas are calm and there’s a lot of juvenile baitfish in the area.

You’ll want to run out to the reef, and just slowly motor around looking for a good rocky ledge where you’re marking fish, then get up-current of that spot and set out your anchor. A big key to successfully catching yellowtail snapper is current, which will spread your chum across a large area and draw the fish to the boat. If there’s not a lot of current, you’re not going to pull in a lot of fish.

We use lots of chum, often 25 pound blocks of ground chum in chum bags which we supplement with horse oats to draw the fish towards the surface. You can find schools of yellowtail snapper anywhere up and down that reef line from Key Largo to Key West.

Unlike a lot of the other snapper species, yellowtail snapper are extremely line and leader shy, so I like using no more than 12 pound test when targeting them. The standard yellowtail outfit is clear Sufix 12-pound monofilament with no leader, a 1/16th ounce HookUp Jighead with a small piece of bait or a whole silverside. The key is to match the drift of your bait with the drift of the chum, so if the current is really moving you might have to use a little heavier jighead.

You want to freespool the bait back into the chum line with no tension so it falls naturally with the other bits of chum. When the bite comes the line will accelerate, and all you have to do is close the bail and reel the fish in.

You can supplement your ground chum with glass minnows, which will really get the fish feeding aggressively. Another thing a lot of yellowtail anglers do is make chum balls out of Masonry sand, ground chum or glass minnows and oats. They’ll pour all the contents into a five-gallon bucket and mix it up, and sometimes even add a little menhaden oil for scent. Then you form a palm-sized ball out of the mixture with your hands, and set it on the cutting board to dry and harden.

Once it’s hardened, you softly place it into the water and let it fall out of your hand. The chum ball will sink to the bottom and when it hits break open, exposing all the chum. The chum that’s still in the sand will get picked at by fish for several minutes, holding them in the area.

Yellowtail snapper fishing isn’t difficult, but you need to make sure you don’t skimp on the chum, or you can get the fish feeding well in your chum line and then run out. If that happens, the fish will quickly wander off.

The average yellowtail snapper in the Florida Keys is around two pounds, with a lot of three and four pounders, and anything over five pound considered a flag yellowtail. With a little bit of effort and a lot of chum, you can catch enough snapper to fill your limit and provide dinner for your entire crew.

Pepper Releases New Single “Good Thing Going” ft. Slightly Stoopid

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on Pepper Releases New Single “Good Thing Going” ft. Slightly Stoopid

It’s hard to believe that in all of the songs and albums put out between Pepper and Slightly Stoopid, respectively, that not once has it come about them actually recording a song together; Even after double digit tours dating back to the early 2000’s! Well that has changed now that Pepper’s new single “Good Thing Going” features Miles Doughty of Slightly Stoopid!
GTG-cover-OG
It was announced in a recent interview with drummer, Yesod Williams, when he shared with The Pier: “I’m more than happy to say that our brother, Miles (Doughty) from Slightly Stoopid will have a whole verse on ‘Good Thing Going.’ Me and the boys were talking one day, months ago, about new music and it dawned on us, we’d never done a collaboration with Stoopid, AKA the first band/people we met when we moved to San Diego from Kona on May 12, 1999!”

“Good Thing Going” is a version the band adapted from an old reggae artist they love in Sugar Minott. Miles was able to track his verse with the help of his engineer James Wisner, aka J-Wiz, amid Stoopid’s Sounds of Summer Tour. “Kaleo had a demo version of the cover he had worked up at home,” Yesod shares. “So we literally texted Miles on the spot and that was that! Extra big shout out to Miles and J-Wiz for pulling the verse together while prepping and being on the ‘Sounds of Summer’ tour!”

The song will be the first taste of new music following Pepper’s 2016 release of Ohana. This will also be the first time Pepper has had a guest feature on a song since the late, great Josh Fischel of Bargain Music guested on “Stormtrooper” from the 2002 release of Kona Town.

311 Reveal ‘Beautiful Disaster Imperial IPA’

Posted in Reggae Roots Music | Comments Off on 311 Reveal ‘Beautiful Disaster Imperial IPA’

Just a few months removed from making their 311 Amber Ale widely available for all to enjoy via Luekens Liquors, 311 recently announced that they will be releasing their follow-up effort in November in the form of an IPA. Once again teaming with Rock Brothers Brewing in Tampa, FL., the band has announced that the brand new, “Beautiful Disaster Imperial IPA” will soon be hitting the shelves!
IPA-Bottle
311’s debut beer release 311 Amber Ale was a long-time coming, having been brainstormed upon for years dating back well before its release in 2015. Rock Brothers Brewing proved to be an important catalyst to bringing the idea to life, as they were able to come along “with an authentic model that made it possible for the band to make the beer they wanted.” The beer featured a golden-amber pour with caramel and malt accents, paired with a forest-like aroma and a clean finish.

Much to the delight of 311’s fans and beer enthusiasts alike, enter the fresh, new Beautiful Disaster Imperial IPA which will debut November 3! In describing the flavor that can be expected for the IPA, the band released an update to help their soon-to-be-drinkers get a feel for what’s to come:
“We started with a base malt that imparts a subtle nutty flavor and combined it with others that add a malty sweetness and clean finish. We used Mosaic hops for aroma and flavor, combined with the right amount of bittering hops to give it a little bite. Kumquats provide the unique citrus flavor, a touch of tartness and that beautiful orange color.”

Mosaic hops – how fitting! Those who indulge in this mighty fine beverage can expect high volume with ABV clocking in at 11.3%. This will be a limited edition beer, only available in bomber bottles of 750mL. Tentative dates for online orders are slated to begin in early January — check back at The Pier soon for a review of the new release, and follow the link for the official website for Beautiful Disaster Imperial IPA by clicking HERE!

311 Fall Tour, Beer Release New Year’s Eve Show

In addition to the announcement of their next beer release, 311 is getting ready to hit the road for 19 shows this Fall with a run of dates from October 7 – November 4. The band notated that the tour will be focused on cities that are “less frequented” from 311.

Depending on the venue, supporting acts on the tour will include Rebelution, Pepper, Roots of a Rebellion, RDGLDGRN and more. Surrounding the release of their Beautiful Disaster Imperial IPA, 311 will also play a special release show on November 4 right down the road from Rock Brothers Brewing in Tampa at The Cuban with support from The Supervillains and Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe.

Trying to make plans for ringing in 2018?
311 has you covered there as well, having just announced a special New Year’s Eve 2018 show to be performed at The Marquee Theater in Tempe, AZ. Special guests on hand will include the return of the Phunk Junkeez (who are set to release a new album), The Original Wailers, Black Bottom Lighters and DJ Soulman. Tickets go on sale to the general public September 29 – they are expected to go fast so be ready if you are trying to make moves — Find their upcoming tour dates by clicking HERE!
