Our sit down interview with this week’s Featured Artist – Jim Hoehn

(TRB)Where are you based these days?
(JH) Brookfield, Wis. (suburban Milwaukee)

(TRB)Do you have a Regular Gig where your fans can always find you?
(JH) No regular gigs. On the road one weekend per month as work, family, life permits. Augment with local gigs and opening act slots.

(TRB)Do you have any current projects in the works?
(JH) No current project. Released latest CD, “Silhouette of a Fool,” in April.

(TRB)What was your major influence for pursuing a career in Trop Rock?
(JH) Jerry Jeff Walker

(TRB)And the question everyone asks, with such a variance of answers. Who are/were your musical influences now and getting started?
(JH) Was always a writer (career journalist), but not a musician. Won a songwriting contest. Listened to all kinds of music, but major influences were storytellers – Jerry Jeff; early Jimmy Buffett; John Prine; Steve Goodman: Gordon Lightfoot.

(TRB)Who, if possible, would you like to perform with?
(JH) Guy Clark

(TRB)What is the one place that you have on your Bucket List of Venues to play?
(JH) Ryman Auditorium, Nashville.

(TRB)Tell us about your most memorable performance.
(JH) Most memorable performance – first public appearance. Winning a songwriting contest and walking out on stage at Milwaukee’s Summerfest armed with 9 original songs, an acoustic guitar and a bad case of nerves in front of several thousand people.

(TRB)What is the best way for your fans to stay in touch?
(JH) I don’t have a fan club. However, I have a lot of friends I’ve met through music. Best is my website at or right here via Facebook.

Featured Artist of the Week – Jerry Diaz

Posted in Featured Artist of the Week, Trop Rock Artists | 1 Comment »

Jerry Diaz is a songwriter, solo perfomer, and founder of the band “Hanna’s Reef”. The son of a merchant marine (R.L. Diaz) from the coast of Venezuela, and an artist (Irene Rivera) from Mexico, Diaz has both the nautical spirit and the gypsy flair running through his veins. Born and raised on the upper Texas coast, Jerry gives listeners a glimpse of the coastal lifestyle in just about every song he writes. From songs about Key West, Florida, to songs about New Orleans, and the Texas beach towns that he’s grown up in, Diaz takes you on a musical journey of boats, beaches, and bars.
As a songwriter, Diaz has accumulated quite a catalog of songs that have been enjoyed throughout the Gulf Coast, for the last several years. Jerry founded the band “Key West” in 1993, and performed with that band until April of 2002. During that time, Key West recorded three albums, which featured many Diaz originals. It is with Key West that Jerry developed his trademark high-energy “tropical” songwriting style that folks have come to know and love.
After leaving the band Key West, Diaz formed his current band, “Hanna’s Reef”, in July, 2002. Hanna’s Reef features the songwriting of Diaz, including both familiar favorites from the earlier years, plus new compositions. Hanna’s Reef recorded a live album in the summer of 2002 called “Reef Madness”. The band released their first studio CD, “Deja View”, in 2004.
In addition to songwriting, and playing lead guitar with Hanna’s Reef, Jerry also performs regularly as a solo entertainer, and with other songwriters and musicians. In his solo performances, Diaz mixes a combination of original tunes, Jimmy Buffett favorites, and other “tropical” tunes. Jerry covers songs by well known artists, as well as songs by fellow Texans, and coastal songwriters. When Diaz performs solo, he does so with an acoustic guitar only (no backing tracks!)
Diaz has performed in several “songwriter’s showcases”, with fellow songwriters, and good friends. Some of the folks Jerry has performed with include Kelly McGuire, James “Sunny Jim” White, Larry Joe Taylor, Brent Burns, John Reno, David Waugh, Kelly Brown, Jim Hoehn, Sonny Russell, Gordon Price, Jerry Gontag, Jim Morris, Matt Hall, Hugo Duarte, Wes Loper, Eric Stone, Gene Mitchell, Robert Frith, Gary Seiler, Mark Mulligan, Don Burke, and Rick Steffen.

Saturday, November 3rd, 2012. Key West, Florida. Meeting of the Minds!

Here is your schedule for the day as promised!

Here is the link to the Meeting of the Minds schedules that are now are now up on the web:

Just before I start with the schedule I want to tell you about a new discount you can use for the entire year of 2012 while visiting Key West. Many of you already have a Key West Bar Card in your wallets and purses from 2011. Now we have a special deal worked out just for you. You can get your card in advance and help out one of our favorite PHiP charities at the same time! Check out the link below for all the details!

Now on to the schedule! Starting our day on the beach at the Casa Marina will be our old friend Jim Hoehn!

An author of A Father’s Guide to Birth, Babies and Loud Children, Jim is a Milwaukee-based journalist and songwriter who discovered early that putting pen to paper was a legitimate way of avoiding any form of manual labor, leading to a career path that has included newspapers, magazines and wire services.
Hoehn currently resides in the world cubicle journalism as a production coordinator for JS Online, the website of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. For 11 years, he wrote a monthly magazine column, “Father’s ‘Hood,” described by one reader as “Erma Bombeck meets Dave Barry,” which won national recognition in the humor category from Parenting Publications of America.
A midlife crisis turned Hoehn’s writing attention toward music, where he has carved out a surprisingly successful niche as a performing songwriter despite a musical philosophy of “Six strings, five fingers, three chords, no problem.” As a songwriter he has performed at numerous festivals and events around the country and has opened for a wide variety of national artists, including the likes of Warren Zevon, Jerry Jeff Walker, Todd Snider, James McMurtry, Junior Brown, Robert Earl Keen, Don McLean, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and a memorable evening with songwriter-turned-mystery novelist Kinky Friedman.
Through a combination of shameless self-promotion and clerical errors, Hoehn also has appeared on a number of radio and TV shows, including The Mitch Albom Show on MSNBC.

Jim is a real talent and we all know him as a really nice guy. His stories and original music are not to be missed!

The 5th Annual Trop Rock Music Awards are up next! The Trop Rock Music Awards were established in 2007 to formally recognize the hard work, promotion, and preservation of the Trop Rock Music genre. Over the years, the program has grown to include 18 categories.

This awards show will be kicking off our Saturday Beach Bash at the Casa Marina this year and there are sure to be some performances from some of your favorite artists!

Be sure to join us at 1:00 on the beach and make yourself comfortable in a chair with your stock of cold beverages as we have a show set for you that is sure to have you rocking all the way through the night!

The Young Rebel Goombas hail from Long Island, New York. Tropical rockers, their sound is not so easily pigeonholed. Each member brings a rich and varied musical background to create the luscious Goomba sound.

Goomba means family. Like a big family, they share songwriting duties, and sometimes they bring friends into the mix.
I will tell you this band loves to have a good time on stage. The combination of decades of talent on everything from the heavy percussion and guitar playing inspired from Southern rockers like Duane Allman and Dicky Betts will have you out of your chair having a great time. Not to mention you get to hang with a couple of Emmy-winning band members for a two-hour set! See you there!

Next up is the Castaways Rhythm and Roll Review!

The Castaways were formed when pirates ran their land yacht aground and they found themselves marooned on a deserted island in the mountains of Appalachia. This splendid isolation allowed the Castaways to create their unique style of “Rock with a groove” music. “Incorporating many styles into the pocket” is their credo and it seems to be working… check out their high-energy antics on the main stage Saturday night!

I’m not going to tell you anymore about this band except I would make sure you have your fresh beverage in your hand when they take the stage.

You won’t want to miss a moment of this act!

Jimmy and The Parrots!
Everyone knows these guys can set a stage on fire; literally that was part of the act a few years back at Meeting of the Minds! I thought that was a very cool moment! They are as great performing the music as they are playing it!

One of the most requested Jimmy Buffett cover bands in the country, Jimmy and the Parrots perform not only all the great Buffett songs you love, they also play new and classic rock ‘n roll, as well as outstanding original songs written by lead singer/guitarist Jimmy Maraventano.
Their cover songs include favorites by the Beach Boys, Zac Brown Band, Toby Keith, Jerry Jeff Walker, Harry Belafonte, and Bob Marley, among many others. The band truly appeals to all ages and all musical tastes.

Finally. It’s time to announce the headline act for Saturday night!

Ladies and Gentlemen, all the way from Texas, Robert Earl Keen!

“The Road Goes on Forever and the Party Never Ends!” In this case the road does end right on your stage at the Casa Marina! The Robert Earl Keen Band is going to give you a show you won’t forget right under the beautiful palm trees with the moon shining across the water!

Here’s a link to a video of this awesome song being performed on Austin City Limits:

As singer/songwriter Robert Earl Keen has built a reputation as one of the nation’s finest musical storytellers, he has been guided by several self-imposed rules and traditions that are often the antithesis of music industry standards.
It’s a formula that has worked well for Keen since he began performing in 1981 and paving the way for a generation of songwriters and performers who make a living on the road. He paints musical portraits that are as vivid as sunsets over the great southwest and stories that are as compelling and timeless as Cormac McCarthy novels. But what separates the Americana music pioneer from other songwriters is that he matches this lyrical literature with irresistible melodies, resulting in music that attracts thinkers and dancers alike. His songs are infused with such deep insight and humor that a new meaning and perspective is revealed with each listen, allowing his songs to grow more profound with time. That’s why artists including George Strait, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Lyle Lovett and the Dixie Chicks have chosen to record his songs over the years.
“For our generation of songwriters, he is the Townes Van Zandt, the songwriter’s songwriter,” says Randy Rogers, lead singer of the popular Randy Rogers Band. “I believe his place in the Hall of Fame is in stone. The places I have been fortunate enough to play all had Robert before anybody else. There was no scene until Robert created it. His formula works. Period.”

Here is a nice link to a recent video of Robert talking about his 16th and latest release “Ready for Confetti.”

“Merry Christmas From the Family”
Here’s a link to a video of a song for you to practice singing:
