Gulf Coast Cowboy: May 28

I envy the people who live on the beach. Packing up all of their essentials, selling what they don’t need, and making the choice to live the lifestyle that most of us can only dream about. Beach living is a state of mind and I’m always in it. This week’s episode is dedicate to that state of mind, whether you’re in it all the time, or just when you need a bit of a lifestyle change. These are some of the best songs to change your way of thinking, at least for a little while. Join us on KBEC, Wednesday night at 7pm for your weekly dose of the beach state of mind!

Featured Artist of the Week – Key West Chris

Posted in Featured Artist of the Week, Trop Rock Artists | Comments Off on Featured Artist of the Week – Key West Chris

Chris Rehm started actively writing songs in 1996, with his song “Titusville!” having dabbled in the process in the years prior. At this point he was playing with a Country band in Miami “The Chubby’s Bar B. Qued Band”, which played around what today is the Pincrest – Homestead area of southern Miami-Dade County, in southern Florida. In 2000, six of his songs were picked up by McClure and Trowbridge Publishing Nashville at which point, he became a BMI associated writer. Chris’s unique style combines sophisticated chords in a non-sophisticated format. His passion is blazing new trails, in an easy to listen to format of songwriting. It’s a very unique, yet easily acceptable style of writing.

In 2001, expanding his songwriting horizons and reach, he formed a Blues band, “Chris Rehm and The Rabble Rousers”, focusing on the Harley-Davidson market. In this idiom, his focus was on both motorcycles themselves, as well as the Biker life-style. With songs such as “Fat Boy”, “Electra Glide”, “Sportster”, “Road King”, The Rabble Rousers were quite popular, not only with the Biker crowd, but also with those who appreciated a progressive direction they were taking the Blues to. So much so, that they were invited to play the main stage at the 2002 Sound Advice Ft. Lauderdale Blues Festival.

At the same time, Chris Rehm never lost touch with the acoustic based singer/songwriter that he is. Throughout his time playing with the electric based Rabble Rousers, he always continuously played solo acoustic gigs. As he puts it, “As a writer, it was so refreshing working in two, very diverse medians. If I was writing something in the acoustic median and it stalled, I’d flip over to the electric Blues thing and everything was fresh, once again! It was akin to shifting into another gear. Needless to say, it worked visa-versa as well.” Chris writes in Country, Blues, Rock, and Bosa Nova styles.

In 2008, Chris moved to Key West, a place he’s always dreamed of living. His words say it best: “I appreciate all I’ve done and that has been awarded to me and I have no regrets whatsoever, about anything from the past.” He says with an easy smile. “However, I kind of wish I moved here years ago! I love this town and have no intentions of ever leaving!” Chris is a believer that there are certain geographic regions which stimulate the arts and creativity, more than others and Key West is one of them. “Here, sometimes the ideas come so quickly you can’t take them all in.” He may have something here. We know of a few writers over the years that felt the same way. Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams are two that come to mind. There really must be something in the air down there.
