About the Key West Songwriters Festival
The Key West Songwriters Festival is the largest festival of its kind in the world. The event’s 1995 debut was small but memorable, featuring Mickey Newbury and Shel Silverstein. BMI stepped in as a partner and sponsor in 1996 and has helped it grow into both a tourist attraction and favorite of island locals. The festival revolves around five days and nights of more than 30 free shows, staged at an array of the island’s most popular drinking holes and hot spots, where live music introduces crowds to the faces, voices and stories behind the songs. Diverse lineups featuring more than 100 top songwriters deliver rare, “Key West-only” moments. More info available at

Meeting of the Minds November 3, 2012 Entertainment

Saturday, November 3rd, 2012. Key West, Florida. Meeting of the Minds!

Here is your schedule for the day as promised!

Here is the link to the Meeting of the Minds schedules that are now are now up on the web:

Just before I start with the schedule I want to tell you about a new discount you can use for the entire year of 2012 while visiting Key West. Many of you already have a Key West Bar Card in your wallets and purses from 2011. Now we have a special deal worked out just for you. You can get your card in advance and help out one of our favorite PHiP charities at the same time! Check out the link below for all the details!

Now on to the schedule! Starting our day on the beach at the Casa Marina will be our old friend Jim Hoehn!

An author of A Father’s Guide to Birth, Babies and Loud Children, Jim is a Milwaukee-based journalist and songwriter who discovered early that putting pen to paper was a legitimate way of avoiding any form of manual labor, leading to a career path that has included newspapers, magazines and wire services.
Hoehn currently resides in the world cubicle journalism as a production coordinator for JS Online, the website of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. For 11 years, he wrote a monthly magazine column, “Father’s ‘Hood,” described by one reader as “Erma Bombeck meets Dave Barry,” which won national recognition in the humor category from Parenting Publications of America.
A midlife crisis turned Hoehn’s writing attention toward music, where he has carved out a surprisingly successful niche as a performing songwriter despite a musical philosophy of “Six strings, five fingers, three chords, no problem.” As a songwriter he has performed at numerous festivals and events around the country and has opened for a wide variety of national artists, including the likes of Warren Zevon, Jerry Jeff Walker, Todd Snider, James McMurtry, Junior Brown, Robert Earl Keen, Don McLean, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and a memorable evening with songwriter-turned-mystery novelist Kinky Friedman.
Through a combination of shameless self-promotion and clerical errors, Hoehn also has appeared on a number of radio and TV shows, including The Mitch Albom Show on MSNBC.

Jim is a real talent and we all know him as a really nice guy. His stories and original music are not to be missed!

The 5th Annual Trop Rock Music Awards are up next! The Trop Rock Music Awards were established in 2007 to formally recognize the hard work, promotion, and preservation of the Trop Rock Music genre. Over the years, the program has grown to include 18 categories.

This awards show will be kicking off our Saturday Beach Bash at the Casa Marina this year and there are sure to be some performances from some of your favorite artists!

Be sure to join us at 1:00 on the beach and make yourself comfortable in a chair with your stock of cold beverages as we have a show set for you that is sure to have you rocking all the way through the night!

The Young Rebel Goombas hail from Long Island, New York. Tropical rockers, their sound is not so easily pigeonholed. Each member brings a rich and varied musical background to create the luscious Goomba sound.

Goomba means family. Like a big family, they share songwriting duties, and sometimes they bring friends into the mix.
I will tell you this band loves to have a good time on stage. The combination of decades of talent on everything from the heavy percussion and guitar playing inspired from Southern rockers like Duane Allman and Dicky Betts will have you out of your chair having a great time. Not to mention you get to hang with a couple of Emmy-winning band members for a two-hour set! See you there!

Next up is the Castaways Rhythm and Roll Review!

The Castaways were formed when pirates ran their land yacht aground and they found themselves marooned on a deserted island in the mountains of Appalachia. This splendid isolation allowed the Castaways to create their unique style of “Rock with a groove” music. “Incorporating many styles into the pocket” is their credo and it seems to be working… check out their high-energy antics on the main stage Saturday night!

I’m not going to tell you anymore about this band except I would make sure you have your fresh beverage in your hand when they take the stage.

You won’t want to miss a moment of this act!

Jimmy and The Parrots!
Everyone knows these guys can set a stage on fire; literally that was part of the act a few years back at Meeting of the Minds! I thought that was a very cool moment! They are as great performing the music as they are playing it!

One of the most requested Jimmy Buffett cover bands in the country, Jimmy and the Parrots perform not only all the great Buffett songs you love, they also play new and classic rock ‘n roll, as well as outstanding original songs written by lead singer/guitarist Jimmy Maraventano.
Their cover songs include favorites by the Beach Boys, Zac Brown Band, Toby Keith, Jerry Jeff Walker, Harry Belafonte, and Bob Marley, among many others. The band truly appeals to all ages and all musical tastes.

Finally. It’s time to announce the headline act for Saturday night!

Ladies and Gentlemen, all the way from Texas, Robert Earl Keen!

“The Road Goes on Forever and the Party Never Ends!” In this case the road does end right on your stage at the Casa Marina! The Robert Earl Keen Band is going to give you a show you won’t forget right under the beautiful palm trees with the moon shining across the water!

Here’s a link to a video of this awesome song being performed on Austin City Limits:

As singer/songwriter Robert Earl Keen has built a reputation as one of the nation’s finest musical storytellers, he has been guided by several self-imposed rules and traditions that are often the antithesis of music industry standards.
It’s a formula that has worked well for Keen since he began performing in 1981 and paving the way for a generation of songwriters and performers who make a living on the road. He paints musical portraits that are as vivid as sunsets over the great southwest and stories that are as compelling and timeless as Cormac McCarthy novels. But what separates the Americana music pioneer from other songwriters is that he matches this lyrical literature with irresistible melodies, resulting in music that attracts thinkers and dancers alike. His songs are infused with such deep insight and humor that a new meaning and perspective is revealed with each listen, allowing his songs to grow more profound with time. That’s why artists including George Strait, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Lyle Lovett and the Dixie Chicks have chosen to record his songs over the years.
“For our generation of songwriters, he is the Townes Van Zandt, the songwriter’s songwriter,” says Randy Rogers, lead singer of the popular Randy Rogers Band. “I believe his place in the Hall of Fame is in stone. The places I have been fortunate enough to play all had Robert before anybody else. There was no scene until Robert created it. His formula works. Period.”

Here is a nice link to a recent video of Robert talking about his 16th and latest release “Ready for Confetti.”

“Merry Christmas From the Family”
