Featured Artist Interview – Steve Tolliver from The Trop Rock Junkies

Our sit down interview with this week’s Featured Artist – (Steve Tolliver)

(TRB)Where are you based these days?
(ST) I along with my band Trop Rock Junkies are based out of St. Petersburg, FL but play regularly throughout Florida and the Southeast.  We expect to expand our travels next year as we are starting to get inquiries from Parrot Head Clubs around the country.

(TRB)Do you have a Regular Gig where your fans can always find you?
(ST) We have been playing pretty regular at the Nav-a-Gator in Lake Suzy, FL.  The Nav-a-Gator has been voted top Trop Rock venue in the country several years in a row.  We have been playing there once every month or two.  We also play pretty regularly at Whiskey Joe’s usually for the Tampa Bay Parrot Head meetings.

(TRB)Do you have any current projects in the works?
(ST) I am currently in the studio working on my latest album tentatively titled “Ode to the Sun”.  I expect it to be released prior to Meeting of the Minds.  I also just finished shooting a music video called “Top Down Kind of A Day”.  The shoot took place all the way from Key Largo to Key West.  It was a lot of fun and you can see it on you-tube just search Steve Tolliver or the name of the song.

(TRB)What was your major influence for pursuing a career in Trop Rock?
(ST) I guess you could say Jimmy Buffett.  After years of traveling back and forth to Key West and listening to Buffett, I started writing songs about Key West and naively thought Jimmy might want to record one of them. He may still.  You never know.

(TRB)And the question everyone asks, with such a variance of answers. Who are/were your musical influences now and getting started?
(ST) From a songwriter’s perspective it would have to be Bob Dylan, John Lennon.  Originally I was swept up in the Beatles craze.  After seeing them and all the screaming fans I decided that was the life for me.  I immediately went out and bought a guitar.  The songwriting came 35 years later.

(TRB)Who, if possible, would you like to perform with?
(ST) I have always dreamed of Jimmy Buffett recording one of my songs and calling me up on stage to perform it with him.

(TRB)What is the one place that you have on your Bucket List of Venues to play?
(ST) Any major arena, amphitheater or stadium opening for Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown or Buffett.

(TRB)Tell us about your most memorable performance.
(ST) A couple of performances come to mind.  One was playing the Jimmy Buffett pre concert on stage B at the 1-800-AskGary amphitheater in Tampa, FL in April of 2011 and the other was Jacksonville Landing.  This was a venue that treated us like rock stars.  They paid well, put us up in nice hotel rooms, fed us and brought cases of beer and water to our bus.  Bands should be treated this way everywhere.

(TRB)What is the best way for your fans to stay in touch?
(ST) If you are on facebook either friend up with me, www.facebook.com/stevetolliver.5 or go to the Trop Rock Junkies website, www.troprockjunkies.com and click on the “Subscribe to our Mailing List” link.
