Posted in Artists Schedules, Trop Rock Artists | Comments Off on A Note from The Trop Rock Junkies

The Trop Rock Junkies would like to thank all of our friends around the country for helping make 2013 the best yet.  We look forward to your continued support in 2014 and hope to see you at one of these upcoming events, especially  Music On The Bay, Tampa, FL Feb. 28th, Stars Fell On Alabama, Orange Beach, Alabama March 22nd and the Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club Birthday June 6th and many more to be announced.

We need your help. After being nominated for 4 Trop Rock Music Awards in 2012 and again in 2013 by the Trop Rock Music Association, we think it’s time for the nice folks in charge of Meeting of the Minds to consider the Trop Rock Junkies in there line up for the 2014 Meeting of the Minds in Key West, especially for the Street Fair.  If you know anyone on the MOTM committee let them know you would like to see the Trop Rock Junkies at the 2014 MOTM. You could also drop MOTM director Andrew Talbert an email and let him know you hope they consider TRJ for the 2014 MOTM.  From the Southeast to the Midwest they have performed at the Atlanta Jimmy Buffett Concert tailgate party, Music On The Bayin Tampa, Phins Gumbo Festival (2011), in Jacksonville, FL, Fin Fest in Columbia, SC, the Trop Rockin’ 4th of July in Anderson, IN, where they headlined a show to over 10,000 concert goers (see video at left) and most recently Charlotte Harbor Parrot Head Club’s annual “One Particular Harbor” Birthday Bash, Atlanta and Tampa Bay Parrot Head Clubs Christmas Parties. They are already booked in 2014 for Stars Fell On Alabama  another 3 day music festival where they are the headline act on Saturday Night, Music On The Bay and Sarasota Bay PHC Birthday Bash. The band is followed by thousands of trop rock fans across the country and they have a large following throughout Florida and the Southeast. Their blend of original high energy tropical themed rock with a mix of Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown Band, will be sure to please MOTM attendees. I have included the band’s bio, photos and videos so check us out and let everyone know this is the year for the Trop Rock Junkies at Meeting of the Minds.

From ‘Lightning’ Jack himself.

Hello, I play Guitar,Steel Drum (Lead Pan),Bass,Piano,Percussion and Sing and have Pro DJ equipment for Break Music. I perform Music for Wedding Ceremonies,Cocktail Hour Music,Receptions,Corporate Parties,Clubs and Festivals.Music has filled my life for as long as I can remember.  I grew up in rural Illinois near the Mississippi River listening to Elvis, Johnny Cash and 70’s rock.  At about age 15 I picked up a guitar and started playing rock and roll and then discovered blues and jazz.  I studied locally at Blackhawk College in Moline Illinois.  Later I moved to Hollywood, California to study with some of the top studio musicians in LA at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT).  From there I traveled all over the United States playing in various blues and classic rock bands.  Eventually I made my way to Florida where I finally settled on Treasure Island.

A friend had a Steel Pan, and let me play around with it. I had always loved the sound of Pan music and now after playing one I knew I had to get one. I bought my first Pan from Tommy Rey at .  My heart was set on learning the steel pan so I signed up at St. Pete College to study under Joe Braccio.  Playing with Joe and the whole SPC Steel Drum Orchestra was the perfect stepping stone into steel drum music.  Joe not only taught me the basics but also opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that steel pan can add to my music. The powder coated pans I use were custom made for me in Trinindad from Merlin Gill’s Pan Shop. You can for more info. Also check out Steel drums at .

For years I had been writing my own songs….just recording ideas on my acoustic guitar at home.  Now with the addition of the steel drum I had finally found that perfect blend of sound that I had been looking for.  It inspired me to finish writing my original songs and start working on the production of my first CD.  In April, 2009 my debut album, Treasure Island Blues, was completed. In 2011,I finished a Steel Pan Christmas Cd. My band is in the studio working on an Intrumental Island CD and new original Trop Rock CD which should be finished in 2013!Playing and writing music is without doubt one of my favorite things in the world. I hope to continue making music for years to come. -Jack

From the Trop Rock Junkies

Merry Christmas

The Trop Rock Junkies wish all of you a happy holiday season.  December is here and so are the holidays and the parties.  This Saturday December 15th we will be at the Sunset Grill for our own little Christmas Party.  We will be giving out prizes, CD’s and merchandise.  Wear your TRJ tee shirt or your TRJ Backstage Pass and get extra tickets for the prize drawings.

November had us traveling from Key West to The Yard in Tampa and Ribfest in St. Petersburg.  In Key West we played at the Hog’s Breath Saloon for the Tampa Bay and Key West Parrot Head Clubs, T’s Bistro, Island Dog Bar, Rum Barrell, Willy T’s for the Virginia Parrot Heads.  Kelly McGuire and Rob Mehl were both gracious enough to let me sit in at their events at the Lighthouse Inn and Hog’s Breath Saloon. Colin Ward (TRJ Lead Guitar) and Greg Sabol (TRJ Bassist) joined me in Key West on Thursday for the Tropical Songwriters in Paradise event at T’s Bistro.  From there we went to Sam Densler’s Songwriter’s Island Radio Party at the Island Dog Bar and played a 30 minute set, left there went across the street to the Rum Barrell where Mike Mangum was hosting an event.  Mike turned the stage over to us for another short set.  On Friday we started playing early for an event called Mimosa Morning at 10AM.  Surprisingly the place was packed for so early in the morning.  All of this was for the annual Parrot Head event called Meeting of the Minds.  We met lots of friends from around the country and made some new friends.  We reluctantly left Key West to get back up to St. Petersburg for the annual event called Ribfest.  Trop Rock Junkies played in the afternoon to a great audience that included some friends that drove all the way from Ft. Myers to see us.  We stuck around for Ann and Nancy Wilson and Heart later in the evening.  The following week we were back for our second performance at The Yard in Tampa.  This time the weather cooperated and we had a great time with all of our friends from the Tampa Bay Parrot Head Club.

Upcoming Shows

The 2013 schedule is starting to fill in nicely with some great events including Music On The Bay March 1st, Fin Fest June 22nd and a possible Midwest tour up to Indiana in June.  We will be back at the Nav-a-Gator in Lake Suzy, FL on February 1st and at Whiskey Joe’s on February 8th.  More dates and an updated schedule to come.

Thanks to everyone who have been coming to our shows, buying our CD’s and merchandise.  For any band having people that enjoy your music is what it’s all about.  Have a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year.  We will see you in 2013.

Featured Artist Interview – Steve Tolliver from The Trop Rock Junkies

Posted in Featured Artist of the Week, Pirates, Trop Rock Artists, Trop Rock Interviews | Comments Off on Featured Artist Interview – Steve Tolliver from The Trop Rock Junkies

Our sit down interview with this week’s Featured Artist – (Steve Tolliver)

(TRB)Where are you based these days?
(ST) I along with my band Trop Rock Junkies are based out of St. Petersburg, FL but play regularly throughout Florida and the Southeast.  We expect to expand our travels next year as we are starting to get inquiries from Parrot Head Clubs around the country.

(TRB)Do you have a Regular Gig where your fans can always find you?
(ST) We have been playing pretty regular at the Nav-a-Gator in Lake Suzy, FL.  The Nav-a-Gator has been voted top Trop Rock venue in the country several years in a row.  We have been playing there once every month or two.  We also play pretty regularly at Whiskey Joe’s usually for the Tampa Bay Parrot Head meetings.

(TRB)Do you have any current projects in the works?
(ST) I am currently in the studio working on my latest album tentatively titled “Ode to the Sun”.  I expect it to be released prior to Meeting of the Minds.  I also just finished shooting a music video called “Top Down Kind of A Day”.  The shoot took place all the way from Key Largo to Key West.  It was a lot of fun and you can see it on you-tube just search Steve Tolliver or the name of the song.

(TRB)What was your major influence for pursuing a career in Trop Rock?
(ST) I guess you could say Jimmy Buffett.  After years of traveling back and forth to Key West and listening to Buffett, I started writing songs about Key West and naively thought Jimmy might want to record one of them. He may still.  You never know.

(TRB)And the question everyone asks, with such a variance of answers. Who are/were your musical influences now and getting started?
(ST) From a songwriter’s perspective it would have to be Bob Dylan, John Lennon.  Originally I was swept up in the Beatles craze.  After seeing them and all the screaming fans I decided that was the life for me.  I immediately went out and bought a guitar.  The songwriting came 35 years later.

(TRB)Who, if possible, would you like to perform with?
(ST) I have always dreamed of Jimmy Buffett recording one of my songs and calling me up on stage to perform it with him.

(TRB)What is the one place that you have on your Bucket List of Venues to play?
(ST) Any major arena, amphitheater or stadium opening for Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown or Buffett.

(TRB)Tell us about your most memorable performance.
(ST) A couple of performances come to mind.  One was playing the Jimmy Buffett pre concert on stage B at the 1-800-AskGary amphitheater in Tampa, FL in April of 2011 and the other was Jacksonville Landing.  This was a venue that treated us like rock stars.  They paid well, put us up in nice hotel rooms, fed us and brought cases of beer and water to our bus.  Bands should be treated this way everywhere.

(TRB)What is the best way for your fans to stay in touch?
(ST) If you are on facebook either friend up with me, or go to the Trop Rock Junkies website, and click on the “Subscribe to our Mailing List” link.

Trop On!

Trop Rock News from the Trop Rock Junkies – April 2012

Trop Rock News from the Trop Rock Junkies

April 2012

This is our first newsletter. I hope it helps keep you up to date on the trials and tribulations of the Trop Rock Junkies. We will try to keep them short and promise not to constantly bombard you with e-mails.
We met a lot of trop rock fans in March. Starting with the Music on the Bay Kick Off Party March 1st at Whiskey Joe’s in Tampa. What a great success this event was. It drew Parrot Heads from all over the country. We met folks from as far away as California. The following week we traveled to Jacksonville, FL to play for the Jacksonville PHINS for their PHINS Gumbo Festival at a great venue called Jacksonville Landing. If you are ever in Jacksonville, you will want to check this place out. Lots of shops , restaurants and bars on a beautiful waterfront setting. The Jacksonville Parrot Heads were a great bunch to play for as are all Parrot Head Clubs. Our stay in Jacksonville was short lived. We had to leave by 7AM the next morning to make it to the Englewood Music Festival for a 2:30PM show. We were please to see some of our friends from the Charlotte Harbor Parrot Head Club there to greet us when we arrived.
April started out with a house concert at Terry and Marianne Higgins (mostly) Bar and Grill. It was another enthusiastic group of trop rock fans. The band had a great time thanks to the hospitality of Terry and Marianne.
Upcoming events include another house concert in Jensen Beach, Florida on April 21st. Then a three week hiatus. After that we will be at Whiskey Joe’s for a Tampa Bay Parrot Head Meeting on May 16th (TRJ Trio) and down at Charlotte Harbor on the second Tuesday of June (June 12th) for the CHPHC meeting. Again this will be the scaled down TRJ trio. I will be in Key West the first week in May to check out the Key West Songwriter Festival and visiting Trop Rock friends May 18 thru 20th in Laughlin, NV for the Fins to the West Festival.

We hope to see a lot of you out on the road this summer.

Steve Tolliver
